I watched Blade Runner (1982) on Friday, and I don’t understand the critical praise of it. It’s rated 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and many of the movie reviewers on YouTube that I watch (like Chris Stuckmann) really liked it. Chris Stuckmann recently made a video on how it requires multiple viewings to fully appreciate, but I just don’t feel that it would change my opinion in any way. The reason I watched it was because Blade Runner 2049 just came out, and I’m planning on seeing it.
My problems with it:
- The romance between Decker and Rachel made no sense and came out of nowhere
- The ending confused me (although I’ve heard that the 3rd cut from 2007 had a different ending, but I may be wrong)
- The guy with the hat and mustache... who the hell is he and what was his point of being in the movie?
- There was probably 80% less action than I expected there to be
- When I was arching it, I felt like there were too much stuff going on. Like I don’t understand why Rachel even stayed in the movie (but she did save Decker by killing Leon), it just felt unnecessary besides that.
I just don’t think that it’s so great.
So my question is... What’s so great about the movie?
My rating: C+
