(some?) dogs must have a separate storage compartment in their brain that stores familiar sights/sounds. When they’re asleep, if they hear something they open up an eye and perk an ear and scan the area to see if it matches familiar pitches/images and respond accordingly.

They probably evolved it to this extent because protect companion = free food
