How can sellotape make ink vanish?
I got a receipt with my bbq the other day and decided to future proof it as proof of purchase by covering it with sellotape (sticky tape). I've done this on parcels before to waterproof the address on printed labels without problems.
A couple of days later I look at the receipt and it's blank! The paper is still white, the tape still clear but no ink. It was cheap tape, not a name brand, but where the heck did the ink go?
I think I'll photo it in future.

I nominate Deadpool as best opening credits scene ever. What are your nominees and why ?
I'm re-watching Deadpool for the xTH time and re-discovering my love for the opening title sequence. I say it is the best / most awesomest opening title sequence ever, it was so funny and indicative of the movie you were about to see. However I would love to hear your favorites as well and gimme a word or two (or 300 characters) as to why it's getting your recommendation.

New Year's resolution: to understand Tarkovsky.
I love filmakers influenced by him like Malick and Lars von Trier. But I don't get any of the fuss about the "original". It's similar to Shakespeare for me. I love the people that tried to imitate him much more than the creator of that whole universe.
It feels like Newton and Calculus. The guy creates the field but everyone uses Leibniz notation instead because Newton's gets you stuck.

What movie had the most stars... before they were stars?
I thought of this while watching "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" a few days ago. It has an insane amount of talent in secondary parts before they made it big, including:
- Brie Larson
- Anna Kendrick
- Chris Evans
- Aubrey Plaza
- Mary Elizabeth Winstead (admittedly debatable when she got famous)
Similar movies that come to mind...
"Lord of the Rings":
- Viggo Mortensen
- Orlando Bloom
- Ian McKellen
- Sean Bean
- David Wenham
also "The 40 Year old Virgin":
- Steve Carell
- Seth Rogan
- Paul Rudd
- Elizabeth Banks
- Jane Lynch

Anybody seen World of Tomorrow 2?
I watch the first World of Tomorrow on a semi-regular basis, so I couldn't wait for the sequel. This new entry is bigger and truly beautiful, delving inside the mind of its characters allowing Hertzfeldt to create some really unique and abstract images. But it’s also quite dense, and I think I'll need to watch it several more times before I truly grasp it. Does anyone have any thoughts?

"Dave Made a Maze" is a fun, creative film that I haven't heard anyone talking about
Today I was looking for something to watch and randomly came across Dave made a Maze and after reading the description I decided to watch it.
The art style was gorgeous and the sets were really inspired, not to mention I thought the actors were pretty good (even though I'm a bit biased because I've seen Nick Thune's stand-up before and loved it). And plot-wise, the whole film felt like a grand yet whimsical/light-hearted adventure.
Also, I couldn't find the exact budget online, but the movie seems like proof that indie filmmakers can overcome budgetary constraints with creativity (and hard work).
If you haven't watched it, it's on Hulu and I recommend giving it a shot. And if you have seen it, what did you think?

Would the ending of "inglorious bastards" be considered a war crime?
The part where Brad Pitt and his team slaughtered the nazi highups, including hitler. Except they didn't just kill them. They killed the wives and girlfriends of the generals. They killed the janitor responsible for the upkeep of the theater, the waiters, the producers, etc. If that had actually happened and it was well known, would it have been considered a war crime?

Margot Robbie was about the only thing I liked about Suicide Squad and now seeing her in I, Tonya one can only wait in anticipation of her taking on more roles with that kind of meat as she was just fantastic as Tonya Harding. Saw some people at /r/books talking about reaching their reading goals in 2017. Mine was to go to the movies at least once a week and I ended up going even more: 74 times total! (list inside)
So I just saw some posts over at /r/books and thought I should do the same here and share about my own goal as I'm actually really stoked about it.
I've put up a list below of all the 74 movies I've watched in the theaters this year, ordered by watch date and linked to their respective IMDB page.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
A Cidade É Uma Só? (2011) (BR)
Bingo: O Rei das Manhãs (2017) (BR)
Gabriel e a Montanha (2017) (BR)
Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)
Some side notes: I'm not from the US and some movies hit the theaters a little later here. Also, some local brazilian movies are with their original title.
Overall, it was a pretty good year, wasn't it? Did I miss something? Looking forward to discuss the whole experience with you guys (although I must say I'm no movie expert, just an enthusiast).
As for the next year, I hope to hit the "100 movies" mark and maybe inspire someone here to do the same. I know I highly recommend it, it's super fun.

If Captain Marvel had come out before Wonder Woman, would WW have gotten the same praise?
I think most people on this sub would agree WW is massively overrated. Its definitely an important movie from a cultural perspective, being the first successful superheroine movie helmed by a female director, but I honestly feel like it just followed the blueprint of Captain America: TFA and barely did anything original. Its praised for what it did outside of the film, rather than the quality of the film itself.

Does Avengers: Infinity War have the biggest cast size for a major blockbuster?
Looking at the Wikipedia page, there are 30 people listed under the starring section. That doesn't include some actors whose characters are most likely in the movie but haven't been confirmed yet. Does this movie have the biggest number of cast members for a movie or is there another movie you can think of with more?
Here's a link to the wikipedia page.
Actors listed on the side 'starring' tab:
Robert Downey Jr.
Josh Brolin
Mark Ruffalo
Tom Hiddleston
Chris Evans
Chris Hemsworth
Jeremy Renner
Chris Pratt
Elizabeth Olsen
Sebastian Stan
Benedict Cumberbatch
Paul Bettany
Cobie Smulders
Benedict Wong
Zoe Saldana
Karen Gillan
Vin Diesel
Dave Bautista
Bradley Cooper
Pom Klementieff
Scarlett Johansson
Benicio del Toro
Tom Holland
Anthony Mackie
Chadwick Boseman
Danai Gurira
Paul Rudd
Don Cheadle
Letitia Wright
Winston Duke
The cast section actually lists 5 more actors:
Jacob Batalon
Isabella Amara
Florence Kasumba
Terry Notary
Tom Vaughan-Lawlor
Not to mention other actors who most likely will appear like Tessa Thompson, Idris Elba, and Taika Waititi.

What is the cheesiest one liner of all time?
Mine has to be from Furious 7 during Dom and Deckard Shaw fight scene in the parking lot while hitting each other with crowbars. The Honest trailer sums up it perfectly “two gorillas hit each other with sticks in a parking lot” LMAO while the helicopter attacks the parking lot and collapses Dom says to Deckard “The thing about street fights, the street always wins” and then stomps the ground thus collapsing and Deckard falls. That has got to be the cheesiest one liner in a movie I have ever heard in my life.

Chinese Femme Fatale movies?
Hey everyone, I have a peculiar problem. I invited 80 something people to a "Chinese Femme Fatale themed potluck" without realizing how hard it would be to find movies of that genre to play during the party, does anyone have any recommendations? So far I have "the second woman" which is a pretty weak fit i think, really any movie with a dangerous female antagonist would work. Thanks in advance

Anyone else think 'Bright' should've been a TV show instead of a movie?
I even thought it was going to be a TV show the first time I saw the trailer. There's so much that could be done with the other characters and further dive into the other communities. I don't think just a sequel will be enough.
Maybe Netflix has done so many TV shows that they forgot they were making a movie.

I just watched 12 Years a Slave for the first time. It was a very good movie, sometimes hard to watch but I really enjoyed it. I didn't quite understand Benedict Cumberbatch's character. I know he was the plantation owner, so in the context of the movie he would control the plantation and what happens. Paul Dano was an overseer along with another guy from what I gather.
I don't understand two things. The scene where Solomon is fighting with Tibeats, the other overseer comes and stops it basically. He mentions something to Solomon about he can't protect him if he leaves. Then Tibeats and two other guys take Solomon and put a rope around him and start to hang him. The other overseer comes by and threatens them with a gun but lives Solomon/Platt just enough room to live by using his toes to walk around. This whole scene confuses me.
I thought this other overseer was going to protect him, but left him to basically die. Why would he threaten Paul Dano's character? The other question is Benedict Cumberbatch is the plantation owner, but allows this to happen and then cuts him down. It doesn't make sense, if it's his plantation his rule is law. Why would he allow this to happen and then cut him down? This also contradicts Solomon Northup's own account in his book about him being the most Christian and decent man he ever met. Does anyone have perspective on this?

Plot twist movies are great because of the twist. But the twist is what makes them much less enjoyable while rewatching compared to "simpler" movies.

My vehicle was declared totaled, what are my options?
I was hit in the side of my cross over SUV by a car. It mainly hit the wheel and damaged the breaks and dented some of the rear door. It was completely drive able and fixeable. They deemed it totaled based on the cost of the repair versus the estimated value of the vehicle.
Here's my big dilemma, I owe on the vehicle and I owe more then what it's currently worth. What are my options? Can I demand my vehicle back? Am I able to ask them to fix just the breaks and leave the door? I have never made an insurance claim before.
Can I sue the driver that ran a stop sign? I live in a no fault state. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.

The millennials are the first generation to have an abundance of high quality digital pictures to, one day, show their kids exactly what life looked like when they were young
All the photos my parents took when they were young (not many) are grainy, overexposed, blurry, and/or fading. Since I'm able to take very high quality photos to my heart's content with just my phone, my kids won't have to use their imagination as I do.

That would definitely motivate more people to become donors.

Someone please help me out (Excel sheet)
I have a facility where I provide football training to kids with a football coach. Since the facility is mine we decided on Profit sharing 70% me 30% for the coach, for each student fees. I collect the fees from students and would pay the coach at the end of each month. The problem is kids enroll in on any date of the month. (For eg. One kid joins on 1st, 2nd kids join in 11th, 3rd kid on 24th and if the fees let's say 100 I can't pay him 30x3=90. Cos not all kids got same days off training, right? So I need an excel sheet which could automatically calculate how much do I need to pay him at the end of each month. Please reddit help me out.

millennials will be the first generation with the ability to truly keep up with friends from high school.
In past generations, once you went to college you only saw your high school friends (if they didn’t attend the same university as you) when you came home for weekend or a break. Now we have the power to see our friends’ day to day and quickly, if not instantly, react to it.

What "Downsizing" should have been
If they went all in on the environmental plot, then they shouldn't've have had the gimmicks of the small people, just make it like environmental micro-refugees or something.
If they went all in on the small plot, WHICH IS WHAT I WANTED, then there should've been an enemy- like a swarm of birds getting into the small city's net or a praying mantis coming in from the micro-barrio and wrecking havoc ala-Godzilla. They could've even had a bunch more scenes of the tiny terrorists! Like maybe a small suicide bomber goes off and derails a mini Christmas train set!
GIVE ME SMALL PEOPLE VS MANTIS, NOT SWEDISH MICRO ENVIRONMENTALISTS

Help with a Year-Long Project: Action
Hello again, r/movies! I'd like your help with something.
Last month, I made this post asking for your help with a year-long project. It's still on, and I'd love some suggestions for movies to watch once again This time, however, I'm looking for action movies, not Westerns. Again, I'm looking for a movie a day, so 30 - 31 movies overall. I have a list already, but I'm looking to augment it as much as possible, so that I can pick a solid set of films to watch. So, I'd love some suggestions for must-see action films. That said, I do have some guidelines for this one that might help narrow things down.
-
Nothing that fits within science fiction, Western, or fantasy, please. Got my own months for those. That includes superhero films, by the way (which I love, but I've seen most of them anyway).
-
Action-adventure is fine, as are most other sub-genres of action.
-
I recognize that the earliest action film is probably The Great Train Robbery, but I'm putting that one under Westerns. However, if you've got any films from that era that fit under that category, I'll gladly take 'em (although Keaton's The General is also in a similar boat)!
Just like last time, I'd really appreciate the help, guys. Have a good day!

Looking for a movie
The movie has a kid who follows his brother and friend to a skate park, and he twists his ankle or breaks his leg and the older boys have to go get help and when they get back he's gone because of an owl or something. I really don't remember exactly but that's what I can say. Also, it was night time.

Molly's Game discussion?
Didn't see an official discussion of the movie. Maybe because it wasn't a full release yet, noticed several theaters in my area were not showing it.
Anyway I enjoyed it, thought the story was interesting. They really killed the poker scenes. Nothing that took you out of the movie, if you have any knowledge of poker. Think they did a good job explaining for the non-poker players as well. Went into it knowing as little as possible. After it was cool to read some of the real life names of the people who played at her games. Affleck, DiCaprio, Toby Maguire, A-Rod, etc...
Only real knock on the flick was the use of narration felt a little over done.

A question about Lady Bird
Hey so i just saw Lady Bird and I was very confused about the priest played by Stephan Henderson. At some point, he leaves the school and there's a scene with Lady Bird's mom and him where he talks about something but I didn't quite understand what. Maybe I just missed something, or maybe it's actually not explained to us what's going on. But regardless, does anyone out there have an answer, if not, a good guess?

What is the deal with "The Shining"?
Hello Good People, I have heard about "The Shining" for most of my life and most of that has been about how great "The Shining" is and what a masterpiece it is considered. I didn't see how. I understand the movie in so far as Jack seems to be a frustrated guy that hates his family and seems to blame them for his failings. He mentions how teaching is just to pay the bills and how he actually wants to be a writer. When confronted with isolation and plenty of time to work he just plays around and ends up snapping at Wendy. I understand that there's a supernatural element to the hotel and that seems to seek out Jack and drive him mad by the end. However, I did not find the movie that suspenseful but rather slow and that it dragged in parts. Outside of Jack Nicholson's rather awesome performance of a man gone mad, the other characters didn't really engage me. I didn't find it all that scary. I guess what I'm asking is, how is this such a classic and masterpiece and why do people love it so much? I'm not saying anyone is wrong for liking it but rather I simply do not get it. Any help, perspective or even articles to read would be great. Thank you for reading this post and I appreciate any responses.

So... did they forget to finish the Divergent series?
I saw the poster for the year-overdue Maze Runner poster and remembered that Divergent was meant to do a 2 part thing for its finale. (before they, like Marvel, realized the 2 part thing only worked for Harry Potter and faltered with Hunger Games and Twilight). So they renamed the two parts to Allegiant and Ascendant - I remember Allegiant being released but are they still doing Ascendant? Did it happen and I missed it? Where is it? Honestly wtf

How different do you think the Prequels/Star Wars would be if Lucas held off making Ep. I until 2015?
So essentially instead of having Ep 7-9 now we would have just had the release of Ep II.
Do you think they would better received due to current special effects? Do you think the current times would have much of an effect on the plot or direction? Would the current trend of remaking/revisiting older movies decrease expectations or further the hype Ep.I had?
Or is it all just stupid anyways?

Is DNA geneology kit testing worth it? (Adopted)
Hello, a bit of background info.
My brother and I, technically half siblings (separate father's), were adopted into the same family 2 years apart as infants. (Also two random brothers living out there somewhere with another family.) I found my birth mom on Myspace when I was 19; my mom knew her first name, maiden name and general location. Fastfoward through a lot of years as very inquisitive, nosey kid, I eventually met her when I was 24. She has shared some info about her family historu, but nothing concrete about our birth father's or our extensive history. It's all pretty wishy-washy. Thus, I am inquiring about the extent and quality of information a DNA geneology test can yield.
Who has done it? Any other suggestions of adoptive family history that isn't super invasive? Thanks!

Did I Just Witness a Kidnapping?
Coming out of The Last Jedi with my family, I sat at a table in the mall food court while they ordered burgers. I heard a loud noise and noticed a middle-aged man and a young autistic girl who looked maybe 12 or 13. He had a tight grip on her arm and held her up as she struggled to get down on the ground, yelling "OW! MY KNEE! OW!" Something seemed odd to me, so I kept watching as he pulled her to her feet and then dragged her by the back of her neck toward the mall exit. As she passed by me, she looked me in the eyes, still saying "OW! MY KNEE! MY KNEE!" and pointing at her knee. She did the same thing with the store workers she passed, and then they were outside.
I considered confronting him since something felt wrong to me, but I hesitated because he could've just been a disgruntled parent of an autistic child removing her roughly after her meltdown caused a public scene. In the parking lot, I saw them again and pointed them out to my family, but they didn't seem as suspicious as I was. Am I overanalyzing the situation? I checked the news and the local missing persons list (this is the upstate NY Carthage/Watertown/Thousand Islands area) and couldn't find anyone who matched their descriptions. I'm not sure if I should let it go or take any farther action.

Why do women only want equal rights when it benefits them?
Ok so i understand women want equal rights for fun stuff, like being in government, being in moives, and getting to choose to be in the military. But when the topic of bringing back the military draft comes up all the sudden they change their minds... And if they want equal rights then why don't they start building roads and skyscrapers, being stuff like plumbers or a handyman. I mean If they started back the draft, and included women, women would be protesting saying it was there choice, and didn't have to do it BUT men do... Men literally bulit this country for the past 200 years, and all women had to do was stay home, clean, cook and take care of children... but apparently that's harder than building a fucking skyscraper...
2017... Ok apparently Women can talk about finding men attractive, but men can't talk about finding women attractive, because men rape women... BUT did you know that women rape too! Yep, I'll admit it's rare but it still happens. Women have raped men and women rape women.
I always here about privilege but what about female privileges:
1: Being a stay at home parent is the norm for their gender.
2: they're never expected to do manual labor.
3: women have the privilege of blaming inappropriate behavior on hormones.
4: women have the privilege of being innocent until proven guilty, when being accused of rape or sexual assault,
5: women have the privilege in thinking only men have privileges.
6: only body shaming for women is acknowledged and fought against.
7: sometimes given free stuff because someone finds them attractive.
8: Women only scholarships.
9: 99% of the time always get the children in a divorce.
10: all they have to do is point at a man, and say rape and he will be locked up, with no proof.
11: Steal a mans sperm then sue him for child support.
12: rape an underage boy, then sue for child support.
13: in California a woman can declare any man as the father of her child, and that child will legally become his responsibility.
14: you can't shame women for being fat or having a small butt or breasts, but its ok to shaming men for being bald, fat and having a small penis.
A large majority, of modern women are greedy and narcissistic, but we all just pretend like that's not a thing.

When is an item considered rare?
Sorry if this sounds stupid, I just want to know. I have a limited edition vinyl, there was only like 750 of these ever made. Would it be considered rare or would it have to meet a more specific criteria? Like it has to be unobtainable now or something?

Lady Bird - Can anyone explain the hype?
So I know this is controversial with all the love going around, but I just don't understand all the hype around this movie. While I enjoyed the film, I would not say it's in any way outstanding compared to similar films in the vein. It's hard for me to believe that it is the highest rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes of all time, when it reminds me of countless coming of age films that have come in the past. While it did a solid job at capturing life in High School in the late 90's/2000's, and included some interesting themes, nothing about the movie particularly stood out to me, whether it be the acting, soundtrack, setting, or plot. How many movies have been done before where there was conflict between a parent and a child where the parent disapproves of the child or projects their own neuroses on them? Or how many films have been made about an awkward kid trying to find their place in the world? Countless, and I didn't feel Lady Bird explored those themes in a particularly compelling way.
Contrast this to Call Me By Your Name, which was a similar, albeit non-traditional coming of age film. The themes in CMBYN were substantially more interesting, mature, and fleshed out. The acting was much better, the soundtrack was amazing, the plot was more robust and interesting. I could not stop thinking about it after I left the theater, and the more I reflected on it, the more brilliant it became.
Obviously this is subjective, but I was curious what others thought. Maybe it's just Lady Bird is a more accessible film, and thus it just garnered more critical acclaim?

Sites like Metacritic need to recognize "Sad" as a genre.
Sad films are often just labeled "drama" but so are plenty of feel-good films. "Drama" is just an incredibly vague catch-all label. Imagine if you had to read reviews to find out if a movie was an action flick or a comedy because they were all just labeled "drama."
If movies that make you laugh are their own genre, movies that scare you are their own genre, and movies that thrill you are their own genre, movies that make you sad are also their own genre. Feel-good should be a recognized genre too.

Looking for recommendations for aesthetically appealing movies.
First I'll apologize for not knowing much about movies yet, so this may come off as vague or ignorant. I've always focused more on the writing and plot but I've recently begun to notice and appreciate the design and effects of some movies and how they contribute to the movie as a whole. I'm a big fan of most of Guillermo Del Toro's movies, especially Hellboy: The Golden Army. I'm just looking for more movies that have beautiful visuals that tie into the story will.

Movie about fake Italy trip
I am not sure how long ago I saw a movie about a family who plan a trip to Italy for their very old grandma. But it turns out it’s all staged because the grandma was too old to fly. Does anyone know the name of the movie? I could be wrong about the destination, it could be to Italy or Spain or some other European country.

Why is "Muppets from Space" so under-appreciated?
I'm watching Muppets from Space for the first time since I was 9. I saw it in theaters at the time and frankly didn't get it. I was mildly entertained, but never thought to revisit the movie.
For starters, the soundtrack is funktastic. It's a who's who for excellent funky cuts. The movie has a great y2k paranoia overlaced with its space arc. The rizzo the rat subplot is hilarious. Rob Schneider is in the movie for a short enough time to not ruin it.
At its core, I feel like the movie has a good level of sincerity to it which makes me feel warm and fuzzy. So why's there little to no love for Muppets from Space?
Final thought: I wish they'd revive the Muppets properties. I know the show/muppets most wanted under-performed, but there are endless possibilities for this franchise.

Spielberg has* more Oscars than movies. Does anyone else?
So the reason for the asterisk is that I realize the only Oscars that actually go to him are those for Best Director and, when he also produces, Best Picture. Follow-up qualification: I'm only looking at movies he directed; so if he produced a movie but didn't also direct it and it won Best Picture, I didn't include that in my calculations.
With that said, only looking at theatrical feature releases, Spielberg has directed 29 movies. In any category whatsoever - from Best Picture and Best Director to Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects - those 29 movies have together earned 32 Oscars. And that includes his dearth of getting 0 between Saving Private Ryan and Lincoln (AI, Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal, War of the Worlds, Munich, IJ: Crystal Skull, Adventures of Tintin, and War Horse).
So, with this loose definition, do any other directors have more Oscars than movies?
