Just noticed something about The Joker in TDR. Joker at the beginning is not seeking out Batman. His primary motivations at the outset are truly money, not causing anarchy or killing Batman. This is most realized when Joker says he'll kill Batman only for money (if you're good at something never do it for free).
But as the movie progresses it becomes clearer and clearer Joker becomes obsessed with Batman. I like to think as the Joker looked into Batman for the kill, he became obsessed with everything he stood for. In response, Joker delves further into his own madness until foregoing money in favor of destroying Batmans ideals (you complete me) and burns up all the cash. (What am I gonna do go back to ripping off mob dealers?) I think it shows awesome development for the character.
It also parallels Bruce not taking the Joker serious enough at first (common criminal) but instead delves into him more and more and becomes obsessed. Upon realizing what the Joker could do, Bruce hardens more as the necessary dark knight of Gotham. The characters compliment each other in similar journeys on the way to the ultimate versions of themselves, which they themselves inspired.
