Gareth Edwards has always been a director that I would’ve appreciated seeing more after releasing his movie “Monsters” and then after the visuals of both his blockbusters, Godzilla and Rogue One, I personally think he’s a dark horse and sleeper pick in terms of directing.
As a DIRECTOR, the guys got talent, one of his biggest “flaws” is lifeless characters and bland characters, like in Godzilla and Rogue One. However, how much is that to put blame on Gareth, and not the actual writing?
Another big criticism is of his usage of Godzilla in his own film. He also barely used Vader in Rogue One (granted Rogue One isn’t a Vader film) both Godzilla and Vader have the same approach that I believe Gareth Edwards wanted to show. I don’t think he wanted to show off these characters that much in both films (Godzilla and Vader) in order to get maximum effect out of them when they finally do show up.
What do you think he needs to realize, do, and work on to become less of a niche director(visuals, shots) and join the conversation of the top directors?
