Why did critics praise district 9 while berating bright to no end?

First of all I want to start with this. I understand this is probably just another post about this issue, and I know I'm late to this discussion.....and that's because I didn't watch the movie UNTIL people on reddit started taking action and telling everyone the truth about this crapshoot of a situation.

I'm not really an avid movie watcher. The most out of the way movie I have watched was one called The man from earth.

I will admit I do heed the advice and warnings of the mainstream movie critics out there because I simply don't have the time to research a movie prior to watching it more than whats at face value (which is usually movie critics, rotten tomatoes, metacritic, and imdb.).

The genre of movies I enjoy isn't really prevalent in mainstream media at the moment. There are very few out there that I enjoyed that critics also seemed to praise. District 9 is probably the most notable one. However, other movies I enjoyed were ones like skyline and Battle: LA and they were bombed by critics.

Bright just filled another sweet spot for me with a genre that up till now has only really been realized in anime, manga, and light novels. And as an american I'm glad I got to see something like it in live action with the real bonified actor Will (fucking) Smith.

This movie really fit itself into the alternate fantasy x real world genre (no idea what the call it) like a glove. The fact that Will Smith actually took this gig just proves to me that someone on his level thought the idea was interesting enough to put his name and face behind it.

All the crap critics were saying about how the interaction between characters were either awkward or shallow seem to be just people band-wagoning off another critic's ideas and not actually taking the time to watch the movie.

For instance the character Nick. If someone that has been discriminated their whole life and has fought their way up into a job or position that they were never expected to be able achieve and end up in a situation where everyone is waiting for them to fuck up just so they can laugh some more and to cut them loose..........I wouldn't be surprised to see them act like Nick.

Most critics say there is no depth to the characters, almost like they expected a 7 hour length documentary depicting the shortened version of this alternate earth's history. For most of us that have grown up on anime and cartoons we're used to having to wait for more information. The lore comes naturally, we can think for ourselves. Trying to admonish the first movie in a new IP for not giving enough world building in a world where there seems to be so many fucking factors in play is just ignorant.

The little bit of information they gave in the opening credits with the graffiti was enough to intrigue me, and to have me thinking about it before the actual movie even started.

Next up is the action. I thought the action scenes did REALLY well in depicting the difference in physical differences of all the races we've been shown so far.

They captured the brute strengths of Orcs amazingly well in the gas station scene while at the same time showcasing the agility of elves. All this while still having me retain the belief that the human character ward could still use his experience and his own skillset to be able to defend himself with a gun.

Basically It was like watching lord of the rings with guns. Awesome.

Could it have been more flashy and insane like a john wick movie? Sure I guess if that was what they're going for. But I don't think they were. It was more of a showcasing event to help us understand exactly where balance between the currently shown races stood on the physical level.

Now the reason why I put district 9 in the title is because that was a movie that was extremely well received by critics. I don't really see the difference between these two on a viewing experience level. The only thing that was different was that one was in a movie theater and the other was on my computer. Two different experiences but I feel just as satisfied with bright as I did with district 9.

One movie was almost entirely about character depth and building. While the other was more about an introduction to a world.

An introduction.

Honestly my anger at how the critics has treated Bright was like Maxed at the beginning of this, and now that I've typed this all out i'ts definitely fizzled out.

I just hope that netflix doesn't give up on making movies like this. I guess I need some confirmation from them that they see posts like this and know that there are many many people that disagree with critics and fans that want more of what they're doing in order for my anxiety to be dispelled.

Okay I'm done.
