Hopefully Nolan wins Best-Director at the Oscars, and not Del Toro for Shape of Water.
Shape of Water is a good film, but lets not kid ourselves in thinking Shape of Water is anywhere near Dunkirk's level. Dunkirk has a 94/100 Metacritic score compared to Shape of Water's 84/100 and was ranked as the 9th best film of 2017 by Sight and Sound, the most prestigious film magazine - several places higher than Shape of Water.
Shape of Water is good, but its no Pan's Labryinth. It's a good fantasy tale but it doesn't reach the minimalist nuanced filmmaking of Dunkirk. Shape of Water is better suited for audiences, whereas Dunkirk is better for a higher caliber.
I can see Nolan winning the Oscar.
