Watching the Avengers: Infinity War media machine has reminded me a lot of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Love it or hate it, TLJ did everything it could narratively to "get" the audience. It tried desperately to subvert every expectation that fans may have had. I believe TLJ did so in a way that hampered that particular story, but that's not necessarily my point. Will A:IW be guilty of similar story structure? In some ways, I can see signs. For one, I've never actually seen the 22 heroes on screen together in any promotional material. While that may not be everyone's idea of subverting expectations, having all heroes on screen is a big draw. Instead, I've seen "camps" of heroes splintering off for group adventures. Again, is this subverting expectations? Maybe for some. Another example is I have yet to see Hawkeye or Ant-Man in any promotional material. Will they even be involved in the film? Or will they take a role only in A:IW 2? Again, is this subverting expectations? I'm not sure. My last further example is Karen Gillian saying the film will "galvanize" Marvel fans. That sounds EXACTLY like the buzz around TLJ. In short, what do you think? Will Marvel please fans with exactly what we want or will they try to subvert our every expectations at every turn?
