For example, I think Rope is one of Hitchcock's best films. It features great pacing, amazing mise en scene, tension, and some of his best camerawork (and that's saying something!). I also quite liked Jimmy Stewart in it. However, Hitchcock himself calls it a failed experiment, and nearly everybody seems to think that Jimmy Stewart was woefully miscast.
In case you didn't know, Rope is Hitchcock's attempt to make a film in one long unbroken take. Due to technical limitations of the time, it is actually a bunch of spliced-together ~9 minute takes where the cuts are "hidden" by such things as zooming in one a back or something during a camera movement and fading. While I don't think all of these cuts work, to me it's the only minor flaw in a masterpiece.
But, like I said, Hitchcock didn't like it and I believe Jimmy Stewart didn't like his performance in it.
I also quite like Ghosts of Mars even though I hear John Carpenter (and everybody else) really doesn't.
