How does ‘understanding’ work?

I’ve been hoping to learn how to learn before learning anything else I personally want to, like cooking or advanced mathematics, in hopes of making the whole process of learning things more efficient. At the very least, even if there’s no way to ‘learn better’ than the way you inherently do (if that’s how it is), there must be an answer to how the process of understanding anything actually works and exactly what we do, consciously, to trigger it/do it

Edit : I just realised how pretentious it makes me sound when I say I want to learn ‘advanced mathematics’. Just so everyone knows, I flunked every single subject (including math) in 11th and 12th grade twice and had to give a second retest for each, so academics isn’t really my strong suit. I’m just generally curious about all that tough math that fills up black boards, more so than I was in highschool. It’s one of those things I only want to do when I’m in my comfort zone, if that makes any sense, and highschool was anything but comfortable
