The original is a classic. But to me, it feels like a B-Movie with its mediocre acting and few set pieces. Not to mention that silly dun DUN duuuun every time the creature shows its face. It hasn't aged spectacularly.
The film certainly did things well. The underwater shots were pretty awesome (I don't know much about 50's cinema, but I also liked the camera movement compared to 40's films), and the Gill Man design was fantastic.
The Creature From the Black Lagoon has a lot of potential in a modern movie with a reasonable budget. More filming on location instead of in front of a projected forest. Maybe hire some better actors, too. There is a lot of good in the original to remake, but with some improvements to the production and acting, I think a remake could truly shine. Would you want to see a remake of The Creature From the Black Lagoon?
Some additional ramblings: Compared to the other Universal classics I've seen, I just don't think TCFtBL holds up. I just want to see its potential realized. Hollywood should've remade this classic by now.
I still need to see the sequels: Revenge of the Creature and The Creature Walks Among Us. Anyone know if they hold up?
