Some people think that an R-rating is just to allow for nudity, excessive swearing, buckets of blood, or all of it. The way I have always seen an R-rating is that it just gives the possibility of MORE being in a film. With some PG films, you see fight scenes that are laughable or extremely disappointing. Shaky cameras, or it's just spinning around them or cutting between every single punch or kick and you can't even understand what is happening. It actually takes away from what should be a cool fight scene, and just makes it...bleh. Looking at Wolverine Origins and their first intro with their version of Wade, and he goes into a room and kills a bunch of guards and his swords magically have no blood on them...I'm not saying "WE NEED BLOOD!!" but it's one of those things that just makes it seem off and the only reason is "If we have blood on the swords we would get put to an R-rating."
I won't deny that the language bit is actually something I would like. Not that I think every movie should have a bunch of swearing, but when you have a character say, "THIS IS BULLCRAP!" or "FRICK YOU!" we know what you want them to say, and we know what the character would say, but you have to water it down to avoid getting the rating bumped up. Let the characters be who they are and have dialogue that fits them.
As for the nudity...if it works, OK, but don't have nudity just to have it (TALKING TO YOU ALTERED CARBON!).
So again, I'm not wanting an R-rated X-Men cinematic universe to have all of these things, but I am wanting there to be less restrictions on the possibilities with the characters and stories. Deadpool and Logan are proof that it works, as long as you do it right.
I know, PG films allow for a larger audience and parents to take their kids to see the films, and more ticket sales and all of that. But a great R-rated film can make more money than a crappy PG one.
There's a lot more to it than just what I've stated, but I'm hoping to spark some discussions here regarding it.
