Look, “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” were nearly 40 years ago. Kasdan's work the last few decades has been abysmal. The script for Force Awakens is pedestrian. His film "Darling Companion", which he both wrote and directed, was one of the worse movie of 2012. "Dreamcatcher" (2003) was a laughable attempt at serious sci-fi that he directed and wrote also. Further back, "Wyatt Earp" (1994) picked up a slew of Razzie awards.Since then not too much.
You’d have to go back to "The Big Chill" (1983) to find a really good Kasdan script. The wittiest line in Return of the Jedi is a retread from Empire. Silverado and Grand Canyon were passable. “The Bodyguard” was pure cheese (Costner and Houston carried the movie). And “French Kiss” was too muddled for its own good. I even think Kasdan receives too much credit for Empire. Director Irvin Kershner amended (shorten mostly) a lot of Kasdan’s dialogue, wrote new material, and tightened the story. And Harrison Ford and Kershner improvised Empire’s most famous line. Yet people think Kasdan is supposedly this brilliant prolific writer. Incredible.
