Just saw "Hereditary" last night. All I can say is wow. A really great and unexpected plotline with a couple great performances. Another solid movie released this year was "A Quiet Place". Both share unique plots and seemingly try to do something different.
I was wondering what you guys think about the current and future state of the horror genre. I feel like the 70's and 80's were just absolutely filled with top notch horror films. Average quality seemed to be very high. Since the 90's, I feel like there's been a general decline in average quality. And the 2000's, in my opinion, has been oversaturated with recycled and generic storylines. Just look at all the sequels and remakes in 2017 (It, Rings, Alien: Covenant, Amityville: The Awakening, Jigsaw, Jeepers Creepers 3, Cult of Chucky). Most were among the highest grossing horror films. It feels like most movies are sequels/remakes, or conventional + generic paranormal, slasher, or monster movies.
I personally feel like it's extremely difficult to find a truly unique, memorable, and well-executed horror film today. The name of the game is money, obviously. While there are a handful of great horror films released every year, I'm really hoping we see a revitalization of the genre.
What are your thoughts?
