[Incredibles 2] Subverting Violet's character development

So like others on here I grew up with the first Incredibles movie. I even remember going through a phase of it at 15, constantly rewatching it and reading tons of fanfiction. Anywho so one part of the old movie was Violet's character development. She starts out shy, crushing on the resident hot and popular boy Tony Rydinger. At the end she attracts his attention due to her more outgoing and confidence personality and appearance so they're decide to date. But in the sequel he sees Violet without her mask and Rick Dicker from the NSA erases his memory, but not just of seeing Violet without the mask but Violet *period*.

Now to me, this seems to backtrack against the character development from Incredibles 1. Then, Violet became more confident using her powers and this transferred to her making herself less invisible socially. Now the sequel ended with her asking him out again but first has to catch some robbers with her family. Just seems like a missed opportunity since you could have had her keep the mask incident a secret because of how bad things already were, it would have added some tension and been something to look forward to. It was still a good movie, but still.

Thoughts? Do you like how they did it? Why? If not what would you have done differently?
