Now it is a blanket statement but stay with me for a second. Prisoners as a film is quite bleak and dark being its theme being about lost children it makes a lot of sense. So the films ending you will that will end in some type of despair.
Now the film doesn't totally lose it self in despair but because the children are safe by the end. Now Hugh Jackman's character isn't due to his own actions hes stuck and starving at the bottom of a well. Now my point is that the beauty is we don't know if he will be found you only see his noises being noticed.
And that's what the beauty of the film is whether he deserves to be found or not is thrown out the window. His actions are directly of his own doing and him being found is left to chance.
I'm rambling a bit but this is a film that I admire for sticking to its theme and not compromising.
