Hotel front desk staff / Concierges : Do people tip?

About six years ago I went to a media night for a new bar and ended up sitting with six or seven concierges/front desk staff from different hotels. We somehow got on the topic of tipping, and they all said that it's rare for them, but when it happens, they're so stoked that they'll do everything in their power to get the guest into a better room, send up champagne, etc.

They advised that when I check in, I hand the person a $20 bill and say, "I just want to say thanks for doing everything you can to make this a great stay."

I've told many people about this over the years but I've never been able to bring myself to try it. They all insisted that approach was perfect but something about it seems so slimy to me; like I'm expecting something. I'm still so curious though. Do people do this?
