My anthropology prof brought up an interesting idea concerning the importance of symbols and titles for human identity during a seminar. For ex. I take pride in being a soldier, girlfriend, student, daughter, etc.
But there are certain identifiers we all use to represent ourselves. In my case, I am Russian and take great pride in that and use that as an identifier. People usually associate certain characteristics with the title and automatically attach them to me as a result.
How important do you think these titles are for our individual identities? Could we convey who we are without them?
