I recently watched the movie thinking it would be like a forbidden hidden gem; I know it's hated for the historical inaccuracy and insensitivity, but the real sin is the pacing and dialogue of the live-action scenes. It feels like one of those bad action movies where very lame dialogue exists only to frame the action sequences (or, in this case, the animated stories).
The movie could stand to be much longer, with a slower opening and more character development (plus a little more sense of danger); traditionally-animated fables could remain the centerpiece. It wouldn't have to be dark-and-dreary; just a slightly more realistic portrayal of the Reconstruction-era plantation vibe and more 3-dimensional characters.
I think modern audiences would enjoy a feel-good nostalgic musical. Domestically it would get some hate; but foreign audiences could eat up the Dixie vibe.
Of course there's a 0% chance this will happen.
