Does nobody else think that Gran Torino is a horribly racist example of the white savior narrative trope?

Honestly, I’ve only heard great things about this movie, so I was genuinely shocked by what I was watching throughout the entire runtime. Old white man swoops in and saves a Hmong family from their plight? He even throws his arms out in a Christ-like crucifix pose when he dies! It’s almost comical.

Searching this subreddit I see lots of positive things. Now I’m not the kind to simply rag on other people’s opinions, but I am genuinely interested to hear from people who love this movie. Specifically, your stance on whether or not Eastwood’s character is a “white savior.”

It seems so blatant, and his severe yet unacknowledged racism only amplifies that. I kept thinking he was going to get called out but... it just never happens. I know he’s a super old man from a different time but am I supposed to believe that this extreme racist has a soft spot for the Hmong family? Enough to sacrifice himself? I mean, I knew he was fatally ill, but come on.

On another note, I thought a lot of the acting (besides Eastwood) was simply god-awful. I was just not a fan of this movie in general.

EDIT: I see now that I’ve made a horrible mistake with this post. Perhaps my intentions or thoughts were misread, and that’s probably on me for poor wording. Either way, I’m not enraged or offended by this movie; just thought this could be an interesting point of discussion. I love to hear a variety of perspectives, but I’d prefer to keep it civil and not too heated like it’s been thus far. I had no idea what I was getting myself into with this idea so my apologies!!
