Mary queen of Scots was my annual Christmas movie.

There was some good but there was a lot of bad. The costumes and acting were amazing but as a history major, I take issue with many facts in the plot.

1.Mary and Elizabeth never met. They exchanged pleasantries through letters. I understand you can’t dramatize letter writing but if the goal was to create a historical film, you failed on this point. 2. Mary spent most of her life in France and only moved to Scotland later in life therefore she never had a Scottish accent. 3. Social justice warriors please do not jump all over me regarding this but there simply was not an abundance of black or Asian people in 16th century Scotland or England. Especially not on the royal court. I’m all for equality and minority representation in Hollywood but not at the expense of ruining a depiction of history. I also saw inclusion of 2018 ideas in a 16th century film such as having a trans or gay hairdresser who is dark skinned. This wouldn’t fly in the 1500s. 4. I’m not 100% sure but I don’t believe James’s father Henry was homosexual.

Conclusion: there was some good but also a lot of bad in this film. If you want to consider it a historical re enactment of the events, there’s no issue. But if you want to consider it a dramatization of historical events, it has big issues.
