This post is going to have some spoilers and I'm going to do my best to use the spoiler tag, but be aware I might not do it properly so read on knowing there are spoilers, thanks.
This movie, like in the tittle had such great potential to be great and maybe a franchise with many more movies in the future, I think the execution was poor in the writing, developing of the characters and the story as a whole.
The number one thing I have against this movie is the fact that the movie said Mortal Engines, but in reality there was just one damn mortal engine in the whole movie, oh you want cities fighting each other? nah, such a waste, imagine London VS Japan, Germany know for their machinery, VS Russia, USA VS China ETC. ETC. ETC; BUt no just one big machine with little tiny engines that could.
I'm down with bad ass female characters, when they're set on a mission with proper context and motivation. Hester Shaw, the main female heroine/avenger was so poorly written I felt bad for her the whole movie.
She was driven by hate and thoughts of avenging her mother for the first half of the movie, she had the opportunity to kill Thaddeus Valentine and she completely missed, because of a dumb filler character we knew was going to be the love interest, not to mention he had zero skill to do any of the things he did the whole damn movie, anyway, she didn't evolved in this movie she was all over the place, from being the "don't touch me" girl to the "I love you but don't touch me girl", the whole premise was flawed from the very beginning, why not just go in England peacefully and infiltrate, grab a blunt heavy object and kill her "father", witch by the way, the almost pulled a Star Wars reveal of NO Hester I'm your father, where all her hatred and courage from the beginning went? She stabbed him, so close and personal, so intimate in that moment, and then when she could do it and be over with she just choked, her story is easy to follow, bad ass girl, to independent , to loner, to cheesy,to Sarah Connor, to in love "for no reason other than company apparently", to I forgive you, to world traveler. It's like she had three different scripts for three different movies.
Tom Natsworthy, the main whatever he was in this movie.
Cliche character with nothing to offer other than just bad comic re leave, not to mention the made him into a damn Incel good for nothing simpleton who grew up poor, with dead parents, worked in a place way better than he ever deserved to begin with, not to mention he had a dream of being something else, a pilot, how very original, how very predictable, so very boring.
He had a gigantic crush on Katherine Valentine just to completely forget about her in the first five minutes of the movie, not to mention the couple is another cliche of the rich important girl who falls for the poor little guy who is nobody, where have I seen this before? Every. Damn. Were. He gets pushed around and put in his place so often for screwing things up that he's not a man, he's a damn boy trapped in a "Man's" body, and the last nail in the coffin, he knows how to pilot all of the sudden, and he is the only one who knows about ancient technology even when he is not even the curator of the museum, no one else in the movie knew about it, hahahaha.
Thaddeus Valentine, evil character with nothing to offer other than, lets put together this evil machine that is going to fix all of our problems and kill everyone and I mean every one who gets in the way, even your own daughter and mistress, for no apparent reason, he could have done all that without killing anyone He was noting in the movie, he wasn't a scientist, not the Mayor, not the captain, nothing, just a guy who had power from the very beginning for no parent reason other than being an Archaeologist, hi's motivation was to save everyone in London, but in reality he could have killed every single one of "His" people in the process, such a Disney Villain.
Dumb Terminator killing machine that does every single opposite thing he was "programmed" to do, and his biggest downfall ? Being too damn literal, hahahaha (wah wah but ... you promised)
In a whole the movie was filled with inconsistencies from the start, it had no way of pulling the characters in a concrete story line, it wasted the idea of a post apocalyptic world, full of technology and awesome machines.
And lastly the things I would have loved to see in this movie.
MORE DAMN MORTAL ENGINES..!!!!
How they made this moving cities.
A couple of shots of the ancient ones.
An actual relationship with key moments in their falling in "love"
An evil bad guy who had a true passion for his craft, a true motivation other than, they have more shit than us lets try to take it by force.
And maybe just maybe, since it was London, I guess A queen of some sort, royalty is important to the Brits.
And the biggest one, tie the damn characters in a consistent manner that makes sense.
Anyway this has gone long enough I guess, just wait for the video release, don't waste your money on this poorly made movie.
