When two people are fighting and feel they have been wronged, what makes you more likely to sympathize with one of them more than the other one?

For example, two of my friends have been fighting. Both of their feelings are hurt. Yet, all of my friends are siding with one friend (Let's call her Cristabelle) over the other one (Let's call her Maude). Everyone seems to feel bad for Cristabelle even though Maude's feelings are hurt too. I'm staying neutral, but I can't help but wonder why this is happening, and none of my friends seem to have good reasons for it. So, what makes you more likely to sympathize or empathize with one person more than another, even when both of them have experienced the same difficulty?
