I personally believe that how to train your dragon is set in the future. And I have the reasons to prove it, just here me out before commenting how much of an idiot I am.
I believe that after a post apocalyptic event which caused the world's to become different and sent back to the Viking era, mutated creatures who we now know as dragons first started appearing.
The technology in the movie and the way many people speak is reminiscent of modern day English and I believe it was passed down by the survivors of this apocalyptic event.
The reason I mentioned technology is because in the movies there is a display of not only knowledge of Viking styled engineering with weaponry and house building. But also in science and tech which has been passed down. Because I'm sure in the actual Viking world they didn't have swords projecting fire.
