I haven't read the book, this is entirely based on my movie experience, so if these references were "true to the book" and the filmmaker was trying to honor that I could be wrong, but...
Pop culture reference is not a currency for success. People who solely care about pop culture references care about them because they think they're part of a 'select group' of people who recognize them - they're the same people who discover some semi-obscure trivia and get super excited because they know the reference.
Spamming them doesn't mean movie success.
I walked away from the movie not seeing it as a 'tribute to nerds' but a self-serving meta crash grab. It was gross.
