Spoilers I just watched M. Night Shyamalan’s “The Village” for the first time this weekend, and WOW. I went in knowing nothing about the movie at all— hadn’t even seen the trailer. This ended up making it even more suspenseful for me, because I had no clue whether it had elements of fantasy or if it was supposed to be entirely set in the real world. At the beginning, I assumed the movie would follow Lucius and that the plot would build from his request to leave the town.
I was completely shocked when Noah stabbed him and he was taken out for the count. I got the same sort of feeling I got during the Red Wedding in Game of Thrones. “WAIT WTF??? This is the main character?? Where is this going now...?”
It ended up being a complex story about innocence and how much is worth risking to preserve it. The “ones we do not speak of” were deeply disturbing and the image of them at the cabin doors and lurking around the trees in the woods still makes me ~uncomfy~
Noah started off as the perfect picture of innocence— he played games with Ivy and the children. He was never afraid to run off into the woods, despite all of the stories. I’m trying to decide if the moment he lost his innocence was when he found out Lucious and Ivy were getting married, or when Ivy slapped him. I would be interested to hear your thoughts. I’m sure it’s no accident that Noah, the one who had lost his innocence, found himself in the costume at the end, much like all of the elders.
Overall, i found it haunting and wonderful.
