I went to the Regal Theater at Rockville Maryland. I pre ordered on Saturday and the Sunday tickets were mostly sold out and the only tickets left were for the first two rows. When I got to the theater, the first row was filled out too.
I loved The Three Body Problem, and this movie reminds me alot about the book. It also took inspiration from many other scifi movies but also anime. One that really surprised my is 2001 A Space Odyssey, It made so much sense that the AI would go rogue after it decides that all hope is lost for planet earth and try to escape with the what is left of humanity on the spaceship.
The acting was decent. Nothing spectacular. Liu Cixin was criticized for making his characters too robotic when he wrote The Three Body Problem. The Wandering Earth on the other hand tells a very human story. You end up rooting for all the characters in the movie. My friend told me that everyone in the theater cried when he saw the movie. I didn't believe him. Well, I cried too. So now I believe him.
The special effect was on par with Hollywood. I love the transition between scenes where it often zoom out from earth then zoom in on the spaceship and vice versa, giving audiences the sense of scale of the situation.
Overall I think this is the best Scifi movie I have seen since the Matrix. I would recommand it to anyone who loves the scifi genre and movies in general.
