It appears that (in the earlier apartment scene) Jules was his friend as Jules said to Vincent in response to who Marvin was, “Oh, that’s Marvin. Vincent meet Marvin, Marvin meet Vincent.” and Marvin acting calm in the car before being shot leads me to believe Marvin was friends with the two guys in the apartment and was free to go because he didn’t help steal from the boss.
