I was surprised to see one of my favorite movies online rated at 8% on rotten tomatoes.
I believe this movie was completely misunderstood. As is often with Sci-fi.
This epic sci-fi starring Kevin Costner has breathtaking cinematography, shot on site in Colorado etc. More importantly, has one of the deepest subjects ive ever seen in a movie. The power of ideas, beliefs and hope but also how they are shared. This microcosm of the birth of the USA is haunting but incredibly rewarding.
You will never look at a Postman the same way again.
Synopsis:
The whole movie is a western style dystopia that is eerily possible and realistic. Dominated by a post apocalyptic despotic ruler that uses Feudal control and protection racketeering to extert dominion.
With the emergence of this Feudal leader the idea of America dies buried in the memories of the apocalypse survivors that although scarred hold dear their old country.
In this chaos, a drifter, an opportunistic entertainer who basically sells his acting for room and board travelling town to town finds a derelict mail truck. He wears the uniform and carries the nail to its next route "acting" as a restored USA postal worker.
He holds his lie at gunpoint, finally winning over the towns. The towns people bleed hope for this seemingly low level federal employee. Anything for news outside, to mail a letter or to recieve one.
After working the route for food and board, people realized there lost friends and relatives were still alive. Connecting these people with a renewed restoration of the USA proves deadly for the ruling Feudal leader eager to supress their hope and with it his monopoly on their disunity.
The themes in this movie are truly powerful.
The power of a letter The power of institutions like the Post The power of Hope The Idea of the United States ( fragile, uniting but easily lost) The barbarian and despotic nature of man That people will die for hope and an idea
Also, much deeper themes:
Like what is society, why are uniforms worn, how do people assume there roles and occupations etc.
Its ironic that both the Postman and the General are both impostors. Both illegitimate leaders that fell there by chance.
Yes, there are some ego parts with Kevin but people were punitive. This is a great film and cult classic totally Misunderstood.
What do you think?
