Just got done watching "The Mighty Ducks" and it just strikes me as a trope from the 90's where a kid with a single mom goes out of their way to setup his/her mom with the main character. Another movie I could point to is the movie "Pay It Forward", is there a modern day example, or is it something that was just apart of many kids movies from that decade?
