Why do some visual effects in old movies (Alien, Blade Runner, Jurassic Park, etc.) hold up surprisingly well to this day while others (Spawn, The Scorpion King, etc.) make the movies borderline unwatchable?

I initially thought it might have been a budget issue but many of the examples of poor CGI have also been major Hollywood blockbusters. Is it simply a matter of directors using the technology too liberally for shots that it's not quite ready for?

In other words, what specifically do you think causes VFX/CGI to age well or not over the span of 20+ years?
