It became domestically the 4th highest grossing movie of the year but if they really thought they could make that kind of money on just a video release, why would they make that change? Clearly they realized more was to be made in both a theatrical release on top of VHS. They clearly made the right decision and it may just be more appealing to have a movie in theatres as main way to be watching it anyway.
