I’ve watched this film many times and I’m still not bored of it. I love Tarantino and his first film is one of his best. The film is a directorial masterclass. I’ve been told it’s a movie used in A-Level Film Studies and I’m not surprised due to the perfect examples of camera shots such as handheld shots and point of view shots (Tarantino’s trademark view out of a car boot). These really add to the sense that you are there watching the action. The story is extremely compelling and the first time you watch it it definitely has the most effect. The use of flashbacks to tell the story focussing on one character at a time is very enjoyable and provides a good way of building the story up without giving away the big reveal. They also allow humour to be added to the film without breaking the tension in the warehouse. Tarantino chose to link scenes together uniquely with extracts from ‘K-Billy’s sounds of the 70s’ which are especially effective as they contrast the brutal content of the scenes. The best example of this is the scene which features Michael Madsen as Mr Blonde dancing to Stuck in the Middle with You while torturing a cop, one of the most brutal but best scenes. Tarantino has stated he was inspired by some of the best heist movies ever made despite his film not even involving the actual diamond heist due to lack of budget. Tim Roth as Mr Orange puts in a great performance clearly showing why he became a Tarantino regular. The Commode monologue and the scene in the car after he’s been shot are fantastically acted, the pain and panic seems genuine. As expected Harvey Keitel is also fantastic as Mr White, better even than he is in Pulp Fiction I’d say which is an impressive feat. In fact all the dogs are great (even Tarantino himself I think puts in a decent performance for once as Mr Brown). Then we come to the final scene which I’m not going to say anything about except it’s the perfect culmination to a brilliant movie that will blow you away. 9.5/10
