I, personally, often find myself extremely frustrated when trying to watch films that seem to abuse the use of “darkness” for artistic/realism purposes. While I understand that a night-time city scene in a dark/serious movie would lack realism if artificially brightened, I can’t help but become very frustrated when it reaches that point that the visuals on the screen are unintelligible. I would love to hear discussion as to where the opinion lies with others in terms of appreciation for the artistic effect of visual darkness vs the practical effect of not being able to see what is actually going on when you most likely should.
