I just read that Jurassic Park had 14 minutes of dinosaurs shown on screen, with 6 minutes of that made up by CGI and the other 8 being the animatronics. The film was 127 minute film which means that 89% of the film's screen time was not showing dinosaurs at all.
This harkens back to Spielberg's Jaws in which 4 minutes of screen time showed the shark (and not until an hour and 21 minutes into the film). Jaws was 130 minutes long so the shark was shown for 3% of the film.
In my opinion this proves that Spielberg is a genius for capturing our attention without cheap tricks and gimmicks. Anyone else agree?
