Haven't you ever heard, "[blank] actor was offered this part but it eventually went to [other actor]" and wondered how the other actor would have approached the character? Well, we have that chance now with Christopher Plummer and Kevin Spacey. Also, if we could see the Spacey version, we could see the differences in Ridley Scott's direction. In the Spacey version, Scott was able to take his time. The Plummer version was done under a rushed schedule. Sometimes directors work well under rushed conditions, it can go against their self-indulgence sometimes. And from the trailers I've seen, the Spacey footage looks more done up, dramatic, heightened. While the Plummer footage looks more restrained. But that's just my impression from the trailers. In any event, I hope whoever is in charge of the decision to put the Spacey version on the DVD doesn't deny viewers the potential lessons in acting and directing by not including it.
