He made four great films, some of the greatest in film history, but after 1979 he never made another great film, and made only bad, decent, or "good" films, whereas all of his contemporaries - Scorsese, Spielberg, De Palma - were able to do some of their best work in each of the following decades? Was he not as talented as them? Was it a fluke that he made great movies in the first place? He kept making films, but none of them were great. What happened?
