Am I stupid because I don't get the appeal of Star Wars?
Right, so I just saw Solo and after I think 10 films I'm entirely confused as to why this franchise exists. Let me try to break everything down.
At about 7 or 8 I saw "episode one" in theaters, considered it the worst film I've ever seen in theaters and then ignored anything Star Wars related until fall 2015 when I found out about the 70's movies. I watched those and thought they were pretty good.
I fell asleep everytime trying to watch the 2000's ones but now even they have some points I'll come back to.
I saw the one that came out in 2015 and thought, ok, they are imitating the one that works as a blueprint with sequel escalation fine. It passes barely with a C.
Then the last jedi came out and I had a new worst film I've ever seen. This is why I'm starting to wonder if I'm stupid. I can't figure out why anyone is doing anything in that movie and the more I think about it the more confused I get. Why is Luke throwing the lightsaber and what happened to his character since...the first trilogy? He's not even the same guy and it's not an older or jaded or change thing he's just the actor playing a different character. Why did he have a map if he didn't want anyone to find him and was just going to throw beam katanas? Why can Leia fly?! Why won't purple hair lady just tell the Pilot man the plan?! What was the point in fucking around in casino land with freshman tier philosophy asian boy if they had the plan?!
Why did industrial goth fuckboy kill emperor forehead talk all that shit about doing things different with jedi dumpster baby then go on and do the same shit on "we assure you this isn't a rehash of the snow planet"?
Why don't any of the ghosts just come and tell Darth Robert Smith "hey yo grandaddy wasn't a gangsta! Here he is talk to him"
and he could be like "yo cut that shit out and apologize to your mom"
or just drop the lightning.
I felt like I was being trolled by the film itself saying "none of this shit matters". I started to wonder if it was a comedy. I mean there's subversion, but at least that has to make sense, this was just unpredictability for it's own sake. Anyone could do that. The new Jedi is the result of Luke and Leia getting busy and they dumped it out the airlock. That's why she's so strong, she's double skywalker. That's unpredictable but it's also fucking stupid.
Overall I feel like there's probably movies/stories before and even during this that need to explain why anyone is doing the things they are doing.
The worst part was the end.
Usually with any heroic series, when a protagonist steps up you usually have a sense of what they will say and how they will deal with a situation.
Especially their powers.
Now after 10 films I don't know if Luke could jump up and fight the walking tanks by himself, throw them, fold them like magneto, deflect the blasts...and it all turns out to be a new ass pull power.
I also say he's not in character because I mean...how'd he go from "I know you can change" with space hitler to borderline Dirty Harry with a kid he trained...who is also his nephew.
Like I said I don't have a long term attatchment to Star Wars but I hated everything I saw on screen, don't understand why it was shot, feel it was incompetently planned and am unreasonably mad at everyone that participated in it.
Then there's the side stories that exist to answer questions nobody asked. They seem like if we looked at the success of Spider-man and decided Uncle Ben needs a movie where he's a soldier in a war just so his commander can tell him "with great power comes great responsibility." And that commander is Captain America and he could talk to his squad mate Wolverine about how much he loves his gal back home May but she has a sister trying to name a baby and he could say "Peter" is one of his favorite names. Then they could save Howard Stark and he'd say "if you ever need anything give us starks a ring we're family now, the Parker's and the Starks" and the epilogue would be years later the winter soldier programmed to take him out because he knows too much after he drops off peter.
Or a Black Panther movie all about how Claw and Killmonger's Dad met and robbed Wakanda. But ya know take out anything that could be compelling in these films except the names.
I'm ranting now but I just need someone to tell me I'm not crazy and this should have stopped at the third one.

Looking for something that's (literally) endlessly re-watchable.
A friend and I are planning on doing something along the lines of the podcast "the worst idea of all time", for ourselves and our own enjoyment. For those of you that haven't heard of it, this means we plan on watching the same movie, every day, for a year.
This instantly presents a problem, what movie should we watch? It cant be something too good, we don't want to learn to hate one of our faves. It also cant be too bad, we don't want to hate doing this from the start.
We want something relatively fast paced and funny, but are open to suggestions. We cant be too picky, but anything crazy long or with long quiet scenes isn't gonna be any fun.
So what should we watch? What could hold up to 365 re-watchings?
Thanks for your help!
Edit: Okay so this part's gonna keep changing, but here's the list of possibilities we're gonna whittle down from:
Blazing Saddles
Fight Club
Legally Blonde
Groundhog day
Airplane!
Clue
Hot Fuzz
Scott Pilgrim Vs The world
Edit# 2: I'll update with a winner when we figure out who that winner is in the next few hours. Also, who keeps downvoting this? I'm not upset, just curious what the hate's about.
Edit #3: Looks like we're going for clue! Lemme know if y'all want updates.

Centurion (2010): an utter disappointment
Centurion was a huge disappointment. I read that it had some comparisons to Apocalypto (love that movie), and I thought that a "chase movie" where Romans were getting their asses kicked by the native Picts sounded pretty great. It turns out that Centurion doesn't touch Apocalypto one bit.
The first hour of the 2010 action movie was terrible. That's bad enough, but its even worse when the movie is only about 1 hour and 30 minutes long. Bad pacing, editing, effects, overall direction. The pace was too fast; many moments lost power because it was flipping through events as quickly as possible. The editing was choppy; certain scenes felt like they were cut short, and there were many jarring cuts, tying into the pace. This film was very bloody and gory, but almost all of it was terrible CGI; I wouldn't care about the effects as much in a better film, but they drag down a disappointing film even more. The only believable character was Michael Fassbender's. There are some absolutely terrible characters, such as the black Roman soldier whose only trait is running fast. Yeah.
I assume that Centurion was a British film due to the inclusion of multiple black and Asian people in the Roman army, as well as the multitude of female warriors for the Picts. Yes, there were people of color in the Roman army, but they were very few and very far between. About the female warriors; just one question: why? Do women connect with stoic, glaring, silent female warriors who are willing to die on the battlefield with men? If so, this may be the movie for you. But I am opposed to it. As Roger Ebert bluntly stated, "Men are better at killing people." I guess I wanted more of a Braveheart and less of a Diversity Warriors for my historical war films. No need to be a documentary, but some realism would be nice.
There were many points during this first hour I felt like turning the movie off. I could barely look at the screen without cringing. I was pretty miserable, squirming in my seat like a rat. It was that bad.
After the first hour, the film throws a decent shock at you, slows the hell down, and actually gets good. No spoilers, but I was actually enjoying myself. At the end of the first hour, I was ready to give the film a 0.5/10, but after the movie ended, I was ready to give it a 3/10.
Overall, I don't recommend Centurion. I thought that this concept had a lot of potential, but it ended up letting me down. I really wanted to like this film. The only thing it has in common with Apocalypto is that the good guys get chased by the bad guys for a decent portion of the movie. The quality is nowhere near the same.

IN A WORLD WHERE MOVIE TRAILERS AND CLICHES COLLIDE.. we talk about aspects in movie trailers that have been done a lot and have annoyed many of us. The ones I hate the most are the fading to black again and again and again and again, as well as blatant spoilers being shown. Also one time I even found an audio file which was an embodiment of movie trailer cliches.

Just discovered Mamma Mia! (2008) and I'm obsessed!
I don't know why I always put off watching it, but I finally decided to give it a try as Netflix just recently added it. It is such a fun and wholesome musical! I had only ever heard Mamma Mia and Dancing Queen, but now I'm in love with so many other ABBA songs.
It's so cheesy and over the top, but I enjoy how there's no real drama in the whole movie. Obviously there's issues and that's the whole plot point, but it never gets too dark. It's perfect to just rewatch and enjoy when you're in a good mood. Everyone is happy and dancing and singing!
I know I'm 10 years too late on this, but since the sequel is coming out soon I wanted to see what the opinions of the movie on this sub are!
P.S - For any fans, what do we think is up with Donna (Meryl Streep) in the sequel? She's definitely a part of it, but the trailers and plot description make it seem as if she has passed away at some point. In interviews though, the cast says that the only flashbacks are scenes of a young Donna and that Meryl herself is not in any flashbacks. I'm guessing they just didn't want to spoil any content of Meryl in the trailers? But it is very odd that her two friends are the ones helping out Sophie. Where is Donna?!?

Mifune, Toshiro Mifune. Never seen any artist like him tbh. I am actually on the edge of my seat when he comes on screen. What a brilliant artist. That flair, tempo & body language is hard to beat on screen. Kurosawa once said of Mifune that, "the speed of his movements was such that he said in a single action what took ordinary actors three separate movements to express". Arigato Mifune :-)

Cant remember the name of a movie whose trailer played before my Isle of dogs screening today.
Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this but i cant remember the name for a movie whose trailer played before isle of dogs today. here are the details i remember: *The trailer was in academy aspect ratio or square aspect ratio. *It was a movie about a pastor who looks very burnt out on his life. *They mention and show a member of their congregation who becomes and extremist and a bag of explosives is found. *The closing shot of the trailer was the pastor and a woman holding hands laying together and then they levitate. * It may be a prestigious directors newest movie in a while.. * Had a psychological thriller vibe to it. * dark color palette.
this trailer looked so bizzare in a good way but i forgot to write the name down now im blanking on the title.
hope yall can help me and i didnt hallucinate this somehow.

Can't remember the title or actors in this reincarnation movie. Help!
It is a movie about reincarnation of two souls who keep finding each other. It's not the fountain but slightly similar. There is an sf feel to it. Near the end of the movie, they're in the future and fighting together. Honestly, that's about all I can remember. I believe it was released in the past 10-15 years. I feel like the girl even was a robot at one point, but I may be getting things confused.

Meetup has always been my mainstay for getting and meeting people but it seems like in the last couple of years there are fewer events across the board with fewer people participating. And the events that do happen are the same from week to week. Is this just anecdotal or is something going on? Is this site dying off? What are the alternatives? I dislike traditional clubs, I prefer the open nature and event driven model of meetup.

Salesman of Reddit, what are the perks of a commission only position?
Some context. I have two job opportunities before me. One of them is an hourly job in a store/warehouse where I would be in charge of managing said warehouse. The pay is okay, it would definitely be enough to cover my cost of living but just so. However, there has been known to be copious amounts of overtime ( a little too much for my liking) and I would be 33% responsible for meeting the $200k monthly sales mark (without seeing much in the way of commission).
The second job, would be an outside sales representative for selling/installing home security systems. I would be able to work outside (something I would love to do rather than being cooped up in an office), and work on a less restricted schedule. The only thing I noticed was that it is commission only as far as pay goes. For what its worth, leads are pre generated through a separate department.
I understand that commission is really about reaping the seeds I sow, and its about my own personal effort, and I feel confident that I can sell the product this company is asking from me. Any input from anyone in similar positions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot, Reddit!

Fuck canadian geese. Anyone ever killed one? Regardless, how would you do it?
Let me start off by saying never been a huge bird guy. Got chased by a turkey as a small kid and I’ve hated them ever since. But it’s spring in Colorado and these fuckers are just the worst, they shit all over the damn sidewalks, take over areas and won’t let people go by occasionally attacking people and dogs, and they mess up traffic as well. Got a good convo going w some guys about how we’d take care of one. One suggested hitting it in the face, another suggested a nice Adam vinateri power kick to the torso but I personally think it’s neck would be the most vulnerable spot. It’s long skinny and frail, perfect for grabbing, and after that the possibilities would be endless. But anyways, has anyone ever had a funny encounter or actually smacked one of those little shits around?

Anyone miss the non buff and super fit main characters of the 80s?
Just re-watching The Great Outdoors and I started to miss the the actors of the past. The ones who weren't super buff and fit and look like they have been weight lifting all their life. I miss John Candy, Chris Farley and others. Anyone else notice a change in today's movies? Everyone seems to be model potential.

Has anybody seen Battle Royale? Is it worth watching?
Maybe I should give it a try but I hear it changes quite a bit from the novels and doesn't exactly capture the same feel. It at least got a good score and people who've seen it tell me that it's good so maybe I'll try it. Just looking for opinions here, especially from those that have also read the book.

I got Netflix for my Mom but they seem have way too many raunchy movies
Update: Currently got her on a free trial with Hulu. The movie variety seems worse but the algorithm is already giving her better movie listings from the start. I have to wonder if something odd was selected by accident when she was selecting 'movies she likes' or whatever Netflix calls the setup? I might just need to delete her Netflix account, select better movie preferences at start-up and get her queued up with movies she likes. I think that will work on a Roku. Although, I'll probably have to check back in a month to upvote stuff. Thanks for the help!
So I got Netflix hooked up to my Mom's old TV but their content sure has changed since last I checked. It doesn't make it any better now that I can't customize her preferences so shes complaining about around 70-80% of the movies being exceedingly raunchy, "murder-porn" (think Southpark) or just dull documentaries. Wonder if theres something better for her?
What she likes: 'Tasteful' comedies, think B style-movies that don't take themselves seriously. Bad acting is a plus. True stories, generally movies that leave you feeling good. Maybe someone accomplishes their dream or gets married, Etcetera. She generally likes Westerns, or Mysteries but dislikes excessive violence.
Anyways, just trying to help my Mom get a better alternative to cable as she is not too tech savvy. I am unsure if this is the place to ask but thanks for any help.
Edit: It would probably be better to say lewd movies. I figured I would try and use her own words as much as possible to describe her tastes.

Rewatching films with twist endings?
When trying to decide what movie to watch tonight, I had decided on watching Memento for a second time (first being a few years ago) since it's the only Nolan film I haven't rewatched yet, but I keep feeling like it will be boring since I know the twist ending (as opposed to films that don't rely so heavily on a twist). Does anyone have an opinion on this, or a reason I shouldn't be concerned in this case or in general?
Update: Currently rewatching Memento

From Dusk Till Dawn
I watched the director's commentary of From dusk Till Dawn and I love the way Quentin writes action scenes in scripts:
(At the Titty Twister) they beat on the fat monkey man like LAPD's finest
Camera turns towards Sex machine while Fred has a vietnam flashback
Selma turns into a vampire snake and attacks Quentin, all hell breaks loose
And apparently all cast and crew were worried about the vagueness of that line: "Like how much hell?" "Do we have the budget for the amount of hell that breaks loose?"

I just want to hear some funny theories on what brings the characters back to the island in the new Jurassic World.
I just want to hear people’s ludicrous ideas in what could possibly motivate the characters of JW1 to return to the island. God knows it will be ridiculous.
I have not watched the trailers so if it’s in one of those then kindly let this post die.
I’m going to say it’s because a rogue terrorist group lands on the island in the hopes of weaponising the dinosaurs. We have to somehow get some people that can be killed off to the island after all. Now it’s up to Chris Pratt and the gang to go back and ride his trained raptors into battle against the invading force.

The James Bond Reboot Squandered Its Potential.
What makes Casino Royale so good is that it's a deconstruction of the formula and a haunting character study of what being James Bond might actually do to a person. James is kind of a monster who hates everything about what he does, but doesn't know how to live any differently. The tragedy is that when he finally meets someone who can rescue him from this, she betrays him and hardens his heart even further. It's perfect. Quantum of Solace, despite its flaws, provides a pretty good epilogue to this tale during which Bond forgives Vesper altogether. So we have this fully developed Bond, who understands love and death and the weight of his actions ready to face a larger world. Awesome.
So why do Skyfall and Spectre spend so much time trying to drag Bond back to where he was in the sixties? Skyfall starts by saying Bond is past his prime, which is just ridiculous since the last two movies were spent explaining how Bond arrives at his prime. He learns the last lesson he needed to, just to become old hat. He regresses into the same smarmy, self-righteous asshole the first two movies were actively trying to portray as a coat of armor. And while Skyfall is going out of its way to call James Bond old, it introduces archaic tropes like Moneypenny and Q Branch, which immediately feel outdated in this new Bond environment.
Spectre is the worst offender. The idea that Casino Royale, a pretty self contained film, was just the machinations of a hackneyed villain like Blofeld is incredibly insulting, to the movie, to Vesper, and to Bond. I want to punch this movie. It's like Sam Mendez watched Casino, thought it was stupid and just wanted to make From Russia with Love Parts 3 and 4. It's infuriating.
Feel free to disagree below. I just rewatched Casino Royale so I got riled up, but it's entirely possible I completely missed the mark regarding Skyfall or Spectre. I haven't seen those since they were released.

Can someone explain Nolan's "The Prestige"?
I see lots of praise for it everywhere but I dont seem to get it. I love practically every Nolan film but this one really underwhelmed me. Maybe I dont understand the twist correctly? To me, it seemed very blatantly obvious that hugh was cloning himself over and over to perform his trick. Was that actually a surprise to anyone? There were so many clues it seemed too obvious to not catch. As soon as I saw the pile of black hats it was clear. The part with Bale was kinda cool. I just for some reason didn't seem to feel the full effect that others get when the movie concludes itself. I feel like I'm definitely missing something. If you can try to clear this up for me that would be great. Thank you.

Has anyone seen Beast and care to answer all the obvious questions? (Spoilers)
Pretty decent movie. Well shot. Good score. She was good. He was ok... but it didn't answer anything or I missed it due to their accents...
1) Why was she having dreams of people attacking her?
2) Why did she have that one neck hair always growing out?
3) Why did her nose bleed in the interrogation?
4) Did Pasqual admit to killing the girls at the very end? I couldn't understand what he was saying.
5) What was the significance of her liking/disliking the way the two men that were interested in her smelled?
6) Was she getting revenge for him killing the girls at the end when she flipped the car?
7) What was the purpose of her going from desperately hurt laying on the asphalt to all of the sudden able to stand up and be just fine at the very last scene?
Like I said, pretty decent movie, but it just screamed "first-time feature writer/director"... I wish they would've done some edits and re-writes on it...

This might be a stretch but just a thought (Possibly greatest crossover action movie)
I don’t know if I’m doing this right, but just wanted to open up a discussion for thoughts. Wouldn’t it be cool to have a crossover between Denzel Washington’s Equalizer and Keanu Reeve’s John Wick? I don’t even know how the two movies could possibly tie in with each other, but after rewatching both movies for the umpteenth time, I’m convinced that such a movie would have so much free testosterone that your screen would spontaneously grow a beard. Thoughts? Anyone have ideas on a possible plot?

What movie has the most even split dialogue across a large cast?
I tried to be concise in the title, but to elaborate:
On one end of the spectrum you have movies like Gravity, Hard Candy, The Sunset Limited, Sleuth, Before Sunset/Sunrise/Midnight, Buried, Moon, My Dinner with Andre, 127 Hours, and Gravity in which roughly 90% (if not more) of the spoken lines are delivered by just one or two actors.
But what I'm asking for is the other end of the spectrum: what movie requires the highest "n" number of actors to reach 90% of the movie's dialogue? 90% is arbitrary, but seems like a good starting point to get my gist. Presumably it would be something with a large and even-split ensemble cast such as Ocean's Eleven, Nashville, It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, 12 Angry Men, Boogie Nights, Lord of the Rings, Pulp Fiction, or Usual Suspects...but what specifically do you guys think?

Pre-Release Screening of Potential Awards Contender
Just got out from a nearly finished cut of a highly anticipated movie coming out in the Fall that many people expect to vie for awards. I'm glad that I found it to be great, but I'm wondering if it's going to gain traction in the awards circuit. It had impressive direction, an engaging script, one hell of a main performance, and great cinematography. The ending was a tad predictable, but it was still good and enjoyable. I believe it can be a commercial success given the overall talent and it will be interesting to see how they cut the trailer.
The biggest disappointment of the entire movie was that this certain actress was barely in it. She's one of my favorites out there and it's about time she gets more significant screen time.

So is anyone hyped for Jurassic World 2?
I know most people are really hating on this movie and for good reasons the first one was terrible, and basically every single JP sequel has been bad to mixed, but I just saw the trailer for it while watching Solo and some of the shots made it look really cool. I know I'll probably eat my words, but the director J.A. Bayona has made some great movies. To keep in mind I usually avoid watching trailers, but I didn't give a shit about this movie so I just saw it and it looked really good maybe this JP sequel will actually be good??

What movie was this?
Hope this is ok to ask here.
I stumbled across a few moments of a film years ago that struck me as amazing due to the stunning black and white 1950s cinematography, but I barely saw much, only a scene or two.
The amazing scene was a chase through a railroad yard, I think possibly thieves on the run from cops... incredible views of the railroad yard and trains, the guys ducking around between trains and railroad cars.
One finally gets to a wooden shack and breaks into it, and (I may be misremembering this part) I think ends up reluctantly hurting or killing a railroad worker that he surprised in there.
The overall feel was sort of a "juvenile deliquent social panic" film I think.
Now, this part I may be confusing from a different movie, but I remember a scene where there's a dormatory for young delinquents and a caring middle-aged man trying to steer them right... and someone ends up going to the gas chamber. I THINK that it might be that the older guy takes the rap for the young kid, but maybe not.
Also, I think that in the railroad yard the young guy's friend might be killed by a train as they are going through it.
As I say, I may be confusing things by adding the trainyard scene to the other story (but maybe I'm not).
I've been trying to track this movie down for over 30 years since I saw that stunning, STUNNING trainyard scene... so I'm sorry my memory is so foggy, it was so long ago.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide and sorry if this is OT or a bother.

- Delivery Man
- The Hundred Foot Journey
- The Terminal

I don't know if this is common knowledge or not but I was watching Raiders of the Lost Ark and I realized Marions theme starts with the same two notes as Han and Leia theme from The Empire Strikes Back.
I thought this was pretty cool given how both themes are about the love interest of Harrison Fords two biggest characters. You can listen to one and hear the next part to either theme.
I wonder if this says something about John Williams and how he goes about creating his theme. I dont know though, someone who knows a lot of about movie scores tell me how I should feel about this.

What movies have you seen where the soundtrack made as much of an impact on you as the actors or story?
It doesn't have to be a "best score" winner - just important to you.
A few of for me would be:
- Gladiator
- The Last of the Mohicans
- I Am Sam (a boatload of Beatles covers)
- Harry Potter (the intro, especially)
- Blade Runner 2049, just to name a few.
These examples don't just have songs you could swap out for the same effect. Their soundtracks are basically a supporting role and they generate as much of an emotional response as a we'll-delivered line.

Was Peter Dinklage in Willow?
Look at this clip here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLZUrufvTmU.
As much as that guy in the back (the one with the perm) does look like him, I have my doubts it's him. First off, Willow filmed in the UK and Dinklage grew up in New Jersey. Second of all, Movie Extras (at least Non Union), from what I heard, make about $100/per day. It was probably less back in the 1980's.
So, if that was him, he and/or his family would've been paying a lot of money to get Dinklage to fly down to the UK to make chump change for a couple of days. I mean, it's possible they might've paid for his flight like the production people on The Wizard of Oz paid for The Munchkins' travel but I doubt it. It's also possible that they are just really bad with money, who knows? So it might be him but, keeping those factors in mind, I'm going to guess it's not.

Saban's Power Rangers appreciation (no spoilers)
I know you might already be shaking your head at that headline but it's true. I read the metacritic scores, read some IMDB's and everyone was nasty and condescending and so above it. Hooey to that.
It is way, way better than you'd expect. Immediately into watching it I was like wait... unlike the reviews told me this is actually fun and made with a lot of love. I really appreciate how they characterized Alpha, Jason, and Billy was just such a great actor. The CGI was great. The location was gorgeous. It was just a fun adventure. You know, like the 80's movies we love so much. It feels like an 80's movies with today's CGI.
Everyone gets so wrapped up in their bogus never-satisfiable expectations these days that just nothing pleases them. There is nothing to hate about this movie. It's just fun. It's on Amazon Prime for free now. I suggest anyone give it a try. I think it's got future cult classic potential given how dreadful the ratings and critic reviews are, and how actually great it is.

What movies, despite having bad ratings & reviews but you think they are still worth watching?
Ratings and reviews are based on someone's view, so many of them might not be accurate enough to describe a movie. There might be some movies with bad reviews and ratings with pretty decent quality and/or story, and most people would never watch those movies because of ratings alone.
Do you happen to know any movies like what I described above?

[serious] Horror, death and sadness in Saving Private Ryan (a long-winded, personal rant)
The first time I watched Saving Private Ryan I was 15 years old. Before that I was a sheltered kid under social services' care in a foster family, who couldn't play even old shoot em up games because there were spaceships being destroyed and even lasers were considered too violent. But by then I was in a foster home because I'd gotten rebelious etc etc. And that afternoon one of the educators showed up with a VHS tape (That was in 2004, there were still places that let you rent VHS tapes) and said "hey kids wanna watch a movie" and we were all "yeah sure I guess" so we sat in the living room and he put the VHS in and told us it was a war movie. I was like, yeah sure whatever and then he pressed play.
Hence a horror movie begun.
When people talk about horror movies, they mostly refer to scary movies, movies with jump scares, slasher flicks, psychological horror, the lot. However, By the end of the movie I was completely numb. I had just watched a horror movie in the purest sense of the word: A movie that horrified me, a movie that disturbed me, a movie that despite being fictional managed to legitimately traumatize me. Each death, each moment of tension, each time a bullet was fired I was just sitting there, completely quiet, feeling emotionally numb aside from a distant yet terrible gut feeling. I had seen violent movies before in those rare moments when I wasn't under the supervision of a christian family (not a knock mind you, bless them for they obviously cared about me), Robocop and Blade comes to mind, but I still knew I was watching a movie.
Here I might as well have been watching actual war footage. I learned many years later that No, not every german soldiers were this sadistic and monstrous, but Steven Spielberg's a jew, he earned the privilege of making them as disgusting as he wants long before he even was born. But when I saw anyone die in this movie, it felt as if I really was watching someone die. Unlike Robocop's ludicrous gibs and splattered melting man or Blade's CGI gore, in my mind in that very moment I was pulled into the movie;
I was watching living beings being wounded, maimed; many of them then dying violently with the least lucky suffering slow, painful deaths. I dreaded every gunfight almost as much as they themselves did, I wanted it to end. Yet, I couldn't look away like I would have in a slasher movie like Friday the 13th.
As I mentioned, this movie left me traumatized. I barely talked for the rest of the day, and for the next few days I had trouble sleeping because of what I'd witnessed. I was kind of a wuss seeing how the other teens gobbled it up like it was candy.
Earlier this year I came across the movie on DVD. I am 29, turning 30 soon. I figured, now that I am older and have gotten used to violent movies and toughened up in general, I should watch that movie again. I also decided to watch it in english this time (I am french canadian), because why not?
I put the dvd into the player, then when the main menu came up I pressed Play on my remote.
When I watched this movie nearly 15 years ago, I watched a horror movie, something beyond frightening; This year I watched the saddest movie I have ever come across.
This time, I had enough maturity to back me up as I watched the movie. It still pulled me in, and I still felt as if I was seeing actual people dying, but this time I saw beyond the violence, beyond the horror, and bore witness to the tragedy, the sadness of it all.
To me, there are two scenes that still affected me the most. The first was Corporal Caparzo's death, or more accurately the moment he is fatally-wounded.
Some context is needed here: Back when I lived with the christian family, We lived on a farm. They hated violence yet there were moments when we'd have to kill some of our livestock, especially chickens and rabbits, because that's where most of our food came from. I once took part in this. There were one way to deal with the chickens: Decapitation. I was asked to help with that but I couldn't bring myself to even hold the axe. I was then asked to help with the rabbits. Decapitation was once again one way to deal with them but there was an alternate way: Rabbits have fragile spines, and one way to kill them quickly that my foster parents were taught was to simply grab one of them and throw them as hard as possible against the ground, immediately breaking their spine. They then go into convulsions briefly while letting out a death scream, and pass away in the span of seconds. This is brutal yet quick and most of the time cleaner than having to decapitate them. I still only helped out once and after that I would stay inside the house when they had to do the deed again. I couldn't bear the thought of doing this again (not coincidentally I am also the student who failed home economy in high school because I wouldn't throw the lobster into the boiling water).
When I saw Corporal Caparzo get hit, he jerks and flails in a way no human being is supposed to, and I was instantly reminded of the dying rabbits who intentionally or not just flailed away on the ground before dying. His death felt like I was watching an animal die, only his death was much slower, bleeding out in proximity of his peers who were pinned down and were unable to save him in time. It felt incredibly saddening and unjust, as war is known to be.
The second scene, the one that still gets to me the most, is Doc Wade's death after an ill-thought assault against a german squad that previously ambushed and killed other american soldiers. After the battle, the smoke is carried away just enough that we can see the band of brothers we'd been following since the start of their insane mission around one of their own, who is clearly wounded. There is no music, no machismo, no "it's only a scratch"; only men desperately trying to save their own medic, applying morphine and frantically applying pressure to his wounds which in the course of the scene bleeds more and more profusely (I have a phobia of real/realistic blood by the way), the poor man's face getting paler and paler, his words becoming almost incoherent in the midst of shock. His fellow men try to encourage him while pouring sulfa powder into his wounds. The efforts are ultimately yet inevitably futile and Wade himself despite his own will to live realizes it ("Oh god my liver!") and in his last moment of clarity demands more morphine, fully understanding as a trained medic the overdose and death that will ensue. Even his peers understand this, and after brief hesitation they grant his last wish, this act of mercy from a frightened, mortally wounded man, who then devolve into near gibberish; tearfully, weakly calling for his mother with his very last words before passing away.
Before I watched this movie again, the only two scenes that stuck with me from nearly 15 years ago were the Normandy beach landing, and seeing (and hearing) that nazi slowly stab Private Mellish through the heart near the end of the movie. This fact made the other deaths in the movie strike me almost as hard as it did back then, with a huge difference: Where before I saw living beings die, I now rightfully see them as human beings, and this realization made their demises all the more harder to watch, especially those who didn't die right away, those who were still conscious enough to see their own life seep away helplessly and despite their brothers in arms' best efforts.
Knowing all this, it shouldn't come as a surprise to you that seeing Doc Wade die made me cry. The tears began rolling when I started seeing the blood pool and spill from his chest; I wept, horrified (blood phobia, hey) but the valves were truly forced open when I found myself paying attention to what they were saying. Despite the dialogue and the noises the whole thing felt uncomfortably quiet, and as I witnessed the medic's death I again saw a real man dying, not just an actor playing the part, and with the veil of trauma pushed away I saw and felt the tragedy of it all, and that's what ultimately broke me. I was still bawling even after his merciful death, and I felt down for the reminder of the movie.
This movie broke me down again. The symptoms were different but the result was the same. I still felt down after the movie ended, until one of my good friends showed me cute art of millitary planes reimagined as anthro animals, canines, cats, the like. It was suitably adorable and in a twisted way, innocent and light-hearted.
It's gonna sound stupid to you that I took a hour and a half to find the words to write all this just because of actors convincingly faking death, maybe you think I'm being pompous or that I'm taking this too seriously and you probably think it's stupid that I waited so long before making this thread, but sometimes you don't find the right words right away, and at long last I needed to get all this off my chest. Despite this, I hope that perhaps this will be an interesting read to you, fellow redditor.

I'm looking for a certain movie I watched a long time ago I think it's a korean action/thriller movie, about a serial killer that kills a special agent's wife, and that special agent then goes on a vengeance spree and plants a tracking device on the killer and then keeps attacking him, leaving and repeat, until things go south

Help me find a film
This is a bit of a long shot, but hopefully someone out there can help!
(Potential ramblings)
I have this memory of a film in my head from when i was a kid in the mid 90's and I just can't figure it out, no amount of Google searching is doing the trick.
The main character is a tanned beachbum/surfer dude, but doesnt live near the ocean, the opening scene is him drinking beers in his bed watching tv, he turns it off with his foot.
He drives a Harley and takes off to do something, but his bike is always falling into pieces, which be conviently puts back together with a single spanner.
Any ideas?

Will our movies be remembered? Do we have the potential to create iconic films that will inspire many more great moviemakers in the future?
Back in the 70s and 80s we had amazing, iconic movies being made. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Godfather series, Back to the Future, Breakfast Club, ghotbusters, etc. These and many others are going to be remembered for generations to come. What was it that made the movies of this era so unforgettable? Do movies nowadays have the same kind of magic? Is hollywood surviving on reboots instead of creation? What is it that changed everything? Will our generation of movies be remembered the same way? Opinions?

Theories Why 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' is Not Doing Well at the Box Office

Okay so what the actual hell is up with the way some of the scenes look in the Hitman's Bodyguard?
So I saw this film when it came out back in 2017, and found it to be mediocre, and nothing really more. But something that really stuck out was the footage. It almost seems like someone had wiped their finger on the lens and just kept filming. I saw this in an old theater I usually do not see movies in, and just assumed it was the something wrong with the projector.
But it's free to stream on HBO now and what do you know, the same issue is found there too! You can see this in this clip starting around 1:33 and and 2:24 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUbwVq7G_E8
As someone said in the discussion thread, it looked like someone smeared vaseline all over the lens. So why is it like this? Was it a mistake, or even worse, on purpose? So many scenes are like this and it was really distracting for me?

Tobey Maguire's in Brothers is one of my favorite performances in the past decade.
Watching this movie I gotta hand it to Tobey its a really haunting showing of soldiers with PTSD. As someone who's known a couple of people with it its almost scary how accurate his hollowed eyes or thousand yard stare can capture the anguish hes feeling.
I know he got a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in it but I wonder what the reason for it not receiving more acclaim was. Probably have to check the other nominees that year but.
Another thing I notice is when people praise his performance they often go for the scenes where he has a dramatic outburst. But he really shines in the quiet moments where hes staring out in the distance or the scene where he sees Joe's son crawling towards him while his wife is talking to the mother.
All in all just a masterful job makes me also wonder whats happened to Tobey's career as of recent also.

Is it too late for a George Lucas come back?
I often wonder what movies Lucas would be making today had he kept making movies after red tails. Would he have been more of a Chris Nolan type where every movie is different?
Or maybe he would have jumped on the dc/ marvel train? A sci-fi film not star wars from Lucas would have been interesting. Something like interstellar.
Could there still be an opportunity for Lucas to make a come back? Would you want to see something new from Lucas?

Shout out to "Ghostbusters" (2016) and the moment when Garcia's mayor character thinks a magician really sawed a woman in half...Cecily Strong's character tries to tell him otherwise, but he won't have it.
Other moments to shout out because they are similarly funny:
The way Ghostbusters' minds went momentarily blank when trying to supply the villain with reasons to live...their suggestions amounted to: "soup," "salad."
"Don't be like the mayor from Jaws" was a good line, too.
Overall, the script felt pretty polished, comedy-wise.
Also really enjoyed Hemsworth. Liked when he leaned back to compliment Murray's hat.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari: A frightening surrealist shocker
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is a very surreal horror film that is still effective today. It has some of the most unique sets I've seen, and the striking art style is still a visual marvel.
There is still a sense of horror in this film beyond anything I have felt in horror films from the 50's to the silent era due to the powerful performances and visuals. There is something very sick about this world, and once it starts to unhinge, the dread sets in.
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is more Edgar Allen Poe than it is Stephen King. It reminded me of his short story "The Oblong Box", although I can't say if it was a direct influence on the German film.
I definitely recommend seeing this silent classic. The YouTube versions are pretty low quality or actually in German, so I would try to obtain a nice DVD or Blu Ray version with nice reviews to get the full experience of the powerful visuals.

Does anyone get annoyed when people look at their phone during the credits?
This question sounds dumb, but after watching Solo, when the film was over and the credits started rolling, I decided to check my phone to tell the time and to check any messages.
Almost immediately, some guy sitting two seats to my right starts loudly bitching to put my phone away and was being antagonistic about it.
Now I understand if this a superhero film and there is stuff after the credits, but Star Wars films never have any scenes like that. I also get really annoyed when I see someone talk or text in the middle of the film, but I've never seen anyone get annoyed when it's the credits because the movie is effectively over.
Am I in the wrong for checking on my phone during the credits or was this guy being a control freak about it?

The Godfather Part III is a masterpiece and unfairly ridiculed.
I just watched this movie for the first time in probably 15 years. I loved it when it came out and love it even more now.
Let me say that The Godfather is my favorite movie of all time and think it's a perfect movie. The Godfather Part II is really good and is considered almost equal to the first by most critics. Part III has always been blasted by the critics and fans alike. If this movie was in any other trilogy it would be considered a classic. The movie is fantastic in my opinion. The acting is top notch, Pacino gives one of his top 5 performances ever. Andy Garcia is fantastic in it too. Even Sofia Coppola who gets a bad rap for this movie was good. The music is fantastic and it has an epic aura about the film.
I would easily put this in my top 50 movies of all time and maybe top 25. I think it's been unfairly bashed since it came out because it's not what people expected and it followed the first two movies. The range of acting in this movie by Pacino is just amazing.
