I was totally onboard with First Reformed until the scene after Reverend Toller sees the doctor and he basically tells Esther to fuck off (he says he despises her). In my opinion he went from a troubled, but ultimately sympathetic character to just a plain old asshole. It seemed to come out of left field since (as far as I can tell) all she did was love him unrequitedly and offer him support. After that scene I really didn’t care what happened to him.
Did I read that scene wrong? Am I missing something?
