Were all the kids test tube babies? One of the charges Preston got from Father when he was almost turned in and sentenced was "relations with a female", plus it was obvious men and women had to sleep in separate beds even though they were married.
If everyone is a test tube kid that makes the story even sadder. Especially when John Preston was pretty smokin.
