A gritty Bond was definitely needed after Brosnan's Bond turned into a joke with DAD. And Craig brought that in a great way imho. Casino Royale is still probably my favourite Bond movie but after that his run has been inconsistent.
QoS was basicaly an epilogue to CR and really messy in terms of editing, villian etc. Skyfall was pretty great (although not as consistent as CR) and definitely one of the better Bond movies. The villian's plan is convoluted but he is at least memorable and I thought they did a good job with Bond/M's relationship.
But then again Spectre fucked up things, it was probably even worse than QoS because of the forced connection with previous movies and a ridiculous waste of Waltz/Bloefeld as a character.
I guess now it depends on Bond 25, I think if it sucks too his whole run will be tainted like with Brosnan
