2019 Best Movies - March Madness Style!
Region 1 Winner - Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood
Region 2, Winner - 1917
Region 3, FINALS - https://www.polltab.com/bracket-poll/-Bdn_7EreM
Region 4, FINALS - https://www.polltab.com/bracket-poll/gPScLHArCX
I accumulated the top 64 movies from 2019 based upon several critics lists and also IMDB. Seeding was determined based upon Box Office success, rather than by favorite (because everyone has different opinions). I figured that was easiest and also allows for exciting matchups and upsets. Each round will consist of 24 hours of voting. ALL REGIONS ARE NOW ACTIVE. After a winner of all 4 brackets is determined, we'll have the final four. Once we get to a FINAL FOUR, I'll post that final bracket to determine the ultimate champion for the Best Movie of 2019. Sounded like a good way to kill time during the stay-at-home. Everybody stay safe out there!

What's this movie? Involves a blue-skinned woman
It's about a guy who moves to a house and finds a DVD hidden on the attic/basement. The DVD is about a woman (that has blue skin) being murdered by a man. Then they are both at the house, i don't remember if she's alive or a ghost (?). Next thing i remember is someone from the army trying to kill them both and something about a screwdriver on somebody's neck.
I was young when i saw it, like 9yo. (I'm 21 now)
I would be very pleased if I could find it because I ask everybody who's into movies and stuff and I couldn't find it.

Anyone remember an early 2000s Rotten Tomatoes forum guy who had a one-word username I think, pretty sure his avatar was Death from "The Seventh Seal," he wrote a ton on the forum and was really well-versed in international film? Takashi Miike's "13 Assassins"
Last night I, on a whim, turned on "13 Assassins" with no idea on what to expect, having never seen a Miike film before. Suffice to say, I was transfixed the entire time. It felt like Miike had watched a bunch of Kurosawa samurai films and decided to replicate the spirit of those, while adding in his own violent twists. The climactic battle scene, lasting around 45 minutes long, was an exhilarating piece of cinema and never once got boring. It's a smart, bloody, and surprisingly heroic film. There is no question that, among the most popular samurai films out of Japan, "13 Assassins" earns a place near the top.
If I had to pick out a detraction, I'd say that some of the characters were lacking in development (particularly a few of the titular assassins), but the main players were well acted and projected a powerful gravitas to their roles, Koji Yakusho and Goro Inagaki being the standouts (Inagaki in particular, as his part as the villain helped craft a thoroughly despicable antagonist that could easily find a home amongst like-minded peers from Game of Thrones).
Needless to say, I want to see more of what Miike has on tap, though with 100+ films to his name, picking one to watch next might be a challenge.
What are your thoughts on this film and which Miike films should I definitely seek out next?

Help identifying movie
So I am going to try as hard as I can here to give as much detail about this movie as I can, but I haven't seen it in over 6 years so some details about the setting/plot may be off.
It was very similar to Shutter Island (which I just watched because I thought this was it, but it wasn't), where some guy is at a mental hospital or something and becomes convinced that he is crazy by the doctors there. He eventually gives in and accepts the fact that he is indeed crazy until the end of the movie where he sees something that makes him realize he isn't crazy.
I think he sees a piece of clothing or something on the top of a chain link fence. This clothing (I think?) is proof that he is not crazy because he remembers wearing it before he came to the mental hospital.
The details might be a tad off, but the idea is that the doctors convince him that he is crazy and he has been there for a long time, he finally accepts it, then he sees something that is proof that he is in fact not crazy.
I wish I could give more detail on this but that is all I really remember, I am hoping you movie buffs could help me identify this movie. Thanks a ton!!

Movies that made you realize how movies have changed
Zootopia made me realize it doesn't really matter whether a movie is part of the billion dollar club anymore
Before, it was only the movies that were pop culture phenomenons that made a billion dollars. Then, in the 2010's, occasionally a movie that was an actual pop culture phenomenon (like Frozen) would make a billion dollars but now it's mostly franchises, mainly made by Disney, that come and go from the public eye.
And when Zootopia not only got a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes but had the highest-grossing opening weekend (at that point) for an animated Disney movie, I thought it was going to be a pop culture phenomenon like Frozen, The Lion King, or even Finding Nemo.
But, while it was well-received by audiences and has an extremely vocal fanbase to put it lightly, that never really happened, as far as the United States is concerned (as I heard it was huge in Asia). But here hardly anyone I knew talked about the movie. And, if they did, I was the one to bring it up more often than not. Once it grossed a billion dollars, though, I thought it was going to gain popularity but, no, it didn't. It was just received as another "good animated Disney/Pixar movie", it didn't really stick out from the pack.
And that made me realize that it doesn't really matter if a movie makes a billion dollars anymore. You don't even need to be part of a franchise anymore, as Zootopia wasn't really except for animated Disney movies. Now it's normal for a movie to make a billion dollars, as Zootopia proved.

I see footage on tv of underprivileged children and most of them could fall into the childhood obesity category and calorie restriction would do them well. Yes this is not something people want to think about but someone needs to help these kids in low income families learn better eating habits.

How were "Ben day Dots" drawn traditionally in older comics?
Despite looking into it, I couldn't find specifically how these are drawn on traditional ink illustrations. Some say a stencil is used, others say they straight up draw the dots one by one. Is it a mix? Is it done with an airbrush gun? Also, I've seen characters shaded with these dots, but only on the characters themselves and not the whole page. How is that done, to stay within the illustration so precisely, and with such fine/tiny dots? Is it a "pro" thing? This could have a super obvious answer, but I'm still not certain if my suspicions are true and wanna make sure.

Which movies have the best cinematography?
These are some of my picks. I know there are a lot I could have chosen from, but this is just my personal opinion.
Honorable Mention: The Grand Budapest Hotel
-
Barry Lyndon Every shot looks like a renaissance painting in motion.
-
The Tree of Life The world is beautiful. Even the little things we don't even think about seem to get prominence in this movie. They even went as far as to built similar sets at different angles so they could get the lighting exactly how they wanted.
-
Citizen Kane Orson Welles was new to directing and was never given any rules as to what a camera could and couldn't do, so he just went ahead and did whatever he wanted. The result was considered groundbreaking and is still impressive even today.
-
Russian Ark The entire movie was filmed in one single shot. Not only is it impressive, but the movie is gorgeous.
-
Pink Floyd – The Wall Not only are the images striking, they tell the story in a symbolic way like I've never seen before. Aside from the music, the cinematography is how this movie tells it's story, and it succeeds. While it does have some slow scenes, this is one of the only movies I'd recommend for the aesthetic alone.
I might as well also throw in some animated movies, because they have shot composition too.
Honorable Mention: Toy Story 4
-
The Hunchback of Notre Dame They do a good job at making everything feel big and epic. Which is fitting given the setting of the movie.
-
The Prince of Egypt This takes it a step farther by not only being big and epic, but also portraying pain and suffering in a way that could be called beautiful. Ah kids movies.
-
A Silent Voice This has got to be the most natural looking animated movie ever made. There are subtle movements meant to imitate a handheld camera, but it never gets distracting and helps the characters and emotions feel more human.
-
Isle of Dogs West Anderson's live-action movies look like dolls and dollhouses, and this is a movie where it kinda is just that.
-
Adolescence of Utena This movie has a bizarre visual style where the environments move for no real reason. It just gave the animators a chance to show off some elaborate and unique shots.

[SPOILERS] Why i think the Hunt (2020) is a classic.
1) Good writing for a movie that doesn't even need good writing.
2) Awesome subversion of expectation in the first 10-20 minutes where you don't know who the main person is and who will survive.
3) Both a good and a bad. It has such interesting characters. But they die too fast. Like i wanted to know who that vanilla ice guy is. I wanted to find out about the blonde who dies first. I think this could easily be a series with these sort of personalities that we haven't seen in cinema in a more direct way.
I want to see how would each different person would react. How would the guy who hunts elephants rhinos for sport react to things? What are the thoughts of the classic blonde working/most likely fucking the senator/congressman and saying horrible stuff and finally ends up in fox news( i am referencing the first girl who dies.)
4) GREAT action, hopefully if there is a sequel we get more john wick-esque action.
5) LOVE the terminator style main character. I love her funny reactions to things and her intelligence and generally love that character.
6) One problem. The guy pretending to be a refugee. VERY DUMB. like why are you antagonizing this massive guy when you have a bag full of grenades. maybe the only weak moment of the movie.
7) Also generally the rich people besides Athena were MEH at best. I mean you had the golden god (Always sunny in Philadelphia reference) and you did nothing with him? THE GOLDEN GOD?
8)I think this is easily a cult classic and i love that conservatives went crazy over this movie when the bad guys are these whiny liberal billionaires who are so annoying and whiny and pathetic throughout the movie. This is the movie NRA members should be watching over and over. A bad ass veteran kills a bunch of liberal billionaires and says very little. She is John Wayne and John Wick and every bad ass john out there. She is a cowboy/avenging bad ass/terminator style killer/Funny. Everything. She is everything.

Just and error i found because i pay to much attention to movies? maybe, but i find it interesting.
what are your thoughts on this?
PD: Sorry for the bad english, any grammaticaly error i did please tell me.
i also really liked the credit song, here are the lyrics
The road is in a thick grey haze,
Inhaling the dust-filled air with all my might,
It's not snowing nor is it raining
The soles of my feet as parched as a desert.
I burn out everyday
I sweep, scrub, and wipe until my nonexistent muscles give out
Then I grab it again, my palm now all hard and stiff
Ah, ah, ah ah, ah, ah
When the shot glass brims over with soju,
the dirt under my fingernails gets moist
and rain clouds flood the sky
When the shot glass brims over with this bitter soju,
the dirt under my fingernails gets moist
and on my red right cheek,
finally
it's raining.

The Place Beyond the Pines
Just a recommendation for those stuck at home. This film is really quite something. A small town drama starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Dane De Haan. While the third act is weaker than the rest in my opinion, this movie is overall just a fantastic watch. I cannot recommend this enough, this is (in my opinion , which is subjective, so I guess it holds fuck all weight) the sort of film that keeps you thinking after the ending credits have run.
Just watch it, or don't I guess

Are we living the plot of Space Jam?
The is some interesting parallels between what happens in Space Jam and what’s happening in our current day situation, ie Coronavirus.
Primarily, the fact that NBA players started getting “infected” and some refused to play. There is even a scene where a few players put on gas masks while in a locker room.
Now, in the movie, there is no talk of toilet paper shortages or the stock market crash, but a movie can only cover so much and extraneous details like that can take away from a nice, succinct story so I can understand the writers leaving that stuff out.
So the real question is, does anyone know where MJ is? Is he ok? Did he recently get a hole-in-one?

Why do we as an audience always expect the protagonist to be proactive?
I watched Blindness(2008) recently about a non blind woman during a pandemic of blindness and how she interacts with a ward full of blind people along with her husband.
This movie is universally reviled coz there is a rape scene where the women of the ward are coerced by some gangster types to prostitute themselves for sex in exchange for hoarded food and she is included and doesn't do anything.
Later on in the movie she finally snaps and kills the leader of the thugs and instigates an all out battle.
Now my question is why is she hated for this? If you took any average homemaker and put them in a slightly elevated position of power relative to a community it's not like they're going to start immediately solving the community's problems?!?!
why is there such hate for this scene? it is a moment of weakness and eventually causes her to snap and do the action the audience wanted - when in actuality it could have gone the other way and shown Julianne moore turning withdrawn and abandoning her community for not fighting for her?
It's so strange because even I had the visceral thought that she should have killed the thugs immediately but if I think of the women in my life, not one of them has any killer instinct and would have to be pushed waaaay past the edge to consider violently stabbing someone in the neck with a pair of scissors.
why was I bloodthirsty in that moment instead of empathetic? is it because of the setup of the movie? very strange.

I'm trying to find a old black and white movie about three/four brothers constantly getting into trouble. In once scene they cut a hole in their house for firewood so they dont have to walk all the way to the door. In another they get caught smoking in a shed, so their father makes them smoke a part of a cigar and they end up puking in the bathtub. Is this ringing any bells?

When the world was still being discovered having geographical surveys done was expensive work and often bankrolled by Royalty; vanity would dictate that their country would be at the centre, and the top of the globe, and that convention has just stuck ever since.

Are family gatherings to be treated the same as social gatherings?
I have a big family. 4 kids of my own, and between my side of the family and my wife's side of the family I have 13 nieces and nephews. Each side of the family gets together quarterly to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. We've cancelled the first quarter get togethers, and I feel bad that my parents who live an hour away don't get to see their grandkids.
Do you agree that family gatherings should be treated as social gatherings under the current circumstances?

That's really badly worded, but it struck me just now as I move files over my network from one server to another, that people who have gigabit internet service in their home can experience these sort of speeds from a lot of places, meaning it's as if all the world's servers were on their internal network.

I was working for a company part time and they gave me a laptop to use to configure my programs on and make sure they ran correctly while working from home. Is it possible for someone with dementia to realize that?
I will start by saying I have very limited knowledge of dementia and how it works so I will apologize in advance if this whole question is pointless.
I am in my 40’s and I have a terrible memory, the idea of having dementia terrifies me. But what I wonder, as someone who has thought about it, is is it possible for me to realize what is happening to me during an “episode” since I am aware of it now. I know it’s not like time travel but how does the mind deal with possible anachronisms. Does it just ignore all the counter evidence, accept it as a blended reality of then and now, badly explain it away like any science in a fast and furious film?

In these times of trying politics, I offer r/movies an escape to a bipartisan feel good buddy movie: My Fellow Americans (1996) starring Jack Lemmon, James Garner, and Dan Aykroyd.
I had forgotten about this movie and truly it seems like only my family knows anything about it in our friend circle. A former Democrat and former Republican president team up in a cross country chase from assassins.
I only remembered it as I looked at the coffee in my pantry and thought to myself “Decaf...you pussy.” Definitely worth a watch if you’re sick of politics and are wondering “can’t we all just get along?”

What are some really good short movies like Detour (1945)?
I really enjoyed the simple straightforward, yet captivating plot. The fact that the movie is a little over 1 hour long but still felt like complete movie, that wrapped up nicely at the end was a pleasant surprise. The thing that baffles was how good the movie was considering it's short length, compared to modern movies. I would really appreciate film recommendations that are on par in terms of quality and length to Detour. But doesn't necessarily have to be the same genre or have similar plot elements.

Federal reserve slashing interest rates, how will it potentially affect me?
So I'm seeing now that the federal reserve is slashing interest rates to encourage spending and borrowing. I have been looking at buying my first house recently and have my eyes on a few different ones, but I honestly have no idea what I am doing tbh. I've been trying to read up on everything to better understand mortgages and the whole process of it all. My question now is, with the interest rates low now, should I hurry up and apply for a loan now to make use of the low interest rates, or will it not necessarily apply to my situation?

Back before sound recorders or phones, hearing the newest trending song from your favorite composer played must have been quite the bragging point.
Was just listening to Beethoven and thought how rare it must have been to actually hear one of his songs since they were so popular and yet so difficult to play only the composer could actually play it. I just imagine a super hot BOP being released and all of your friends have heard the song but you haven't. Much different than today's world where you can listen to any music anywhere.
