It seems ironic that children who can walk 2000 miles can die of flu.

I would think they would have to be very robust to walk that far, and that people so robust would be less vulnerable to common diseases.

I’m in the movie to watch a foreign language film, any suggestions?

I really am looking for the essential “must-watch” foreign language films. They can be any genre and in any language. Nothing by Godard, Tarkovsky, or Bergman though please as I’ve already seen a lot from them and want to branch out more. Also please don’t suggest something like Satantango because I don’t want to be up all night watching it, try to keep the suggestions around or under 3 hours. Thank you!

Bird Box was good but it has nothing on Cloverfield!

I enjoyed Bird Box but feel like it was lacking something and not to mention the ending didn't quite sit right with me or answer the questions I had at the end of the movie. Obviously some things are meant to be open ended but others should have gotten a lot more closure.

What are everyone else's thoughts?

I saw an early screening for Shazam and it’s honestly the best movie DC has put out since the Nolan Batman series

Shazam may just be the movie to put DC back on track. This movie was pure joy to watch from beginning to end. The script is great and performances are amazing, although with a few underwhelming ones.Amazing surprises and really heartfelt story. Marvel better bring their A game because the competition is getting crisp.

What was Jonathan Nolan originally planning to do in Terminator Salvation before he was forced off?

I am completely, completely against a Terminator movie post T2 but hearing his name involved in it....is exciting based on what he did in Westworld. I think if he did what he does best, we'd get a decent follow-up to what Cameron did. Maybe I'm overhyping it because McG was always going to direct unfortunately, it's a shame the movie couldn't have been saved. I still would have loved to see Schwarzenegger and Bale meet up somewhere down the line.

movie plotholes

Why are movies nowadays so full of plotholes (mostly scifi movies)

I'll put 3 recent examples

- Anihilation

- A quite place

- Bird Box

Particularly this three movies have a lot of plot holes, not like 1 or 2, they have several plotholes, and in some cases like "a quiet place" the whole movie is a plothole.

Is me? is this more and more common every year? and some people seems to be "ok" with plotholes?

A good example of an old Scifi movie with barely plotholes. (or maybe none)

Predator (1987)

I came across with some comments in movie Discussions posts where some users use to be angry with other users whom make rants about how some movies are full of plotholes.

I want to make clear that i'm not interested in to look smart or anything like that, I like coherence in scifi movies too, i love movies, I LOVE good movies where plots are coherent, if something happens that pulls me out of the movie a tingling begins in my brain telling me that somethig it's not right, so maybe in the process i'll keep enjoying the movie but not in the same way, while some other people don't even think or care about it, that's curious for me.

Although none of the movies I mentioned are bad, they are good movies, but they fail at some important points due to plotholes.

Maybe the comparisson is wrong or biased, but, this other movies I put as example pretend to be more profound or meaninfull than Predator, which it's plane and simple but effective, a bunch of guys vs an alien.

Are some movies today trying too hard to be meaninfull? and in the process they lost other things in the plot? it's correct to not care about plotholes if you have a meaninfull movie?

Maybe all movies have plotholes, the problem is when they break their own rules.

Question for those who have seen Bird Box

I started this yesterday and wasn't in the mood for something heavy so stopped after 15 minutes. I'm interested in it if there is a good payoff but I don't want to sit through 2 more hours of gore to have a mediocre payoff "that makes you think." Should I keep watching? And some background... I hated Gravity.

Recount Farenheit 9/11 The Unknown Known 41

Anything else would be appreciated I am not really sure what else to recommend. Thanks.

Looking for recommendations on movies set in America during the 60's or 70's.

I find America during that time pretty fascinating and I've recently watched a few movies set in that time that seemed to capture the look and culture pretty well.

Can you guys provide a list of movies set during that time?

I don't mind the genre as long as they're set during that period. Some that I've really enjoyed include Elvis & Nixon, American gangster, x-men days of future past and man on the moon.

Thank you in advance.

EDIT

Sorry guys, I should have been a bit more clear. Movies SET during the 60's or 70's not made in the time. So period pieces is what I'm trying to say.

I'm on a 80's/90's binge. Give me some of your favourite films of that era to watch

I just watched Silence of The Lambs, The Thing, Truman Show and Goodfellas for the first time all in one week. I feel like a different person now. But I'm not completely oblivious to movies from the 80's and 90's, just trying to catch up on what movies I haven't seen yet from these years.

What are some of your favorite films from that era?

edit: I have a lot of catching up to do.

Finally Shouted "Shut Off Your Phone!" During a Movie

For the first time in my life, I finally had enough and couldn't hold in what was persistently being repeated in my head. I went to see Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and during the showing there were two people looking at their phones constantly.

To give some context, there were some children in the theater and a bit of talking. I expected this with a PG rated Spider-Man movie. For the most part, none of this bothered me. The speaking volume of those kids was more respectful than the person a row over and in front of me constantly using his phone.

The person doing this was by no means young enough to not know better. This person should have been aware that it is unacceptable to be starting at your phone during a movie. For crying out loud, we all paid good money to see a movie up on the big screen, not watch you look at the tiny bright white screen in your hands. Have some respect for your fellow patrons and shut off your phone!

I saw Mortal engines on thursday. It was pretty good. There was a lot of action, and violence, and people dying. The actors Hera Hilmar and Robert Sheehan where pretty good in the movie. The only thing I didn't like was that they showed Shrike only one time though, but other than that there where no flaws in this movie.

Friendship Issues

First off, this is going to be a long post and thank you for coming to read this.

Ok, so I'm a high schooler right now and I've had this friend for the past two years. We met in Freshman year and originally we just met at lunch to study for this course we were taking but then we started to sit together at lunch everyday. We started talking to eachother a lot and doing things outside of school.

Now, forward two years later and we're growing very distant. I know that the reason for that is me, and here's why I've been talking less and less to him. As I go into this, please tell me if any of the reasons I give make me seem like a douche in any way, because I'm usually pretty bad at seeing that type of stuff.

At the start of this year, I just noticed a ton of things about him that just annoyed me. I'd rather not talk about specific details about that, but his behavior just changed suddenly and it just really annoys me sometimes to even think of him. Another issue is that I realized we have nothing at all in common, the only reason we were together last year was for studying for the class.

If I do stop hanging out with him, there's not doubt that he'd find someone to replace me. It's just I honestly have no where to go. I moved around a lot when I was younger so I never really had a chance to get to know too many people going into high school. And all of you probably know what high school's like, you can't just go and find a new friend group.

That's basically my problem here. I just want to know what to do, I'm pretty lost and don't know where to go. Should I just stay where I am for the next two and a half years of high school or try and find somewhere else?

Finally, thank you for reading all of this. I appreciate any answers that come my way, and enjoy your New Year's!

Should I wait to lose my virginity?

Me (F, 18) and my ex (M, 21) broke up recently after 2 and a halfish years of being together and things didn't exactly end well between us. In fact, I'm pretty sure he hates me now. Ever since the break up I just keep thinking.. what if I had lost my virginity to him? People tell you to wait for someone special and that it's supposed to mean something.. but how do you know if someone is special? Because maybe some day they won't be. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense to me to not make a big deal out of losing my virginity. I think I would've really regretted losing it to someone who I cared about so much but that I don't mean anything to anymore. I think I would have regretted it more than losing it to someone I had something casual with. Our break up was dragged out..it needed to end but it was hard. Imagine how much harder and more complicated it would've been if we had lost our virginity to each other. So the day after we broke up I met a guy. We met at school and even though we've been on Christmas break for the past couple weeks we still text a little everyday. We've been on two dates and I know he's interested in me because he kissed me on the last one. I find him extremely attractive but honestly don't think we will amount to much. I wouldn't call him a fuckboy... but he definitely gives off fuckboy vibes sometimes. He seems like the type of guy who would break up with someone simply because he's bored and wants something new. On top of that he's graduating in the spring...he's staying for a masters but even still.. I'm pretty sure with him leaving soon he's looking for something casual. Is it wrong to want to casually sleep with him for a bit while it lasts? My ex lived in another country so ya girl hasn't been getting any for almost three years and on top of that I've been on birth control for a little bit now and my hormones are going insane.. also it's 2018 so I see nothing wrong with it. My question is... was waiting to lose your virginity worth the hype? Or do you think it's no big deal and overhyped? I'm genuinely looking forward to y'alls opinions but no slut shaming please..

I look forward to your creativity!

An objective review of Avengers: Infinity War

Marvel superfan or not, this movie has nothing on films like The Dark Night, La La Land, Pulp Fiction, or Inception . I get that there was an insane amount of hype around this film, and it's awesome to see our favorite Marvel characters come together (The Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor, Spiderman, Captain America, Black Panther, etc.), but we shouldn't let our excitement over all of our favorite characters coming together cloud the fact that "Avengers: Infinity War" is an overly long movie that relies on cheap, unbelievable deaths to generate excitement and that isn't particularly well written or edited. I commend the directors and writers on being able to successfully interweave so many stories, but the movie just felt too long.

It's fight scene after fight scene, and while the performances are good and the script is pretty funny, the film isn't really original and its only redeeming factor is that it's full of characters we all know and love. It's funny to see Thor poke fun at the Guardians of the Galaxy and to see Iron Man and Spiderman interact with Doctor Strange, but when we look at the film objectively, it's really just a standard superhero film (with more superheroes than normal) that relies on cheap plot twists to generate excitement and emotion. No matter how much we love Marvel, we all know that there's no way any of the characters who "died" are actually going to die. The filmmakers expect us to believe that Black Panther (who just made Marvel over one billion dollars), Spiderman, and the Guardians of the Galaxy have all met the end of their respective stories, even when there are publicly announced sequels for all three franchises. I hate to say it, but all the character deaths at the end are just there for shock value, and it's cheap.

From a technical perspective, the fight scenes are directed well, but that's about it. The editing isn't particularly great and the film feels too long at 2 hours and 40 minutes. I feel like half of the time spent hopping from planet to planet could have been cut and the movie would have been about as good if not better.

Apocalypse Now

  • Was the reason the military wanted Kurtz dead because they genuinely believed he was evil, or because they believed that if his existence became public knowledge, it would be a huge embarrassment to the US?
  • I wasn't sure if the General debriefing Willard actually believed what he was saying, or if he was just putting up a front

Is the Rock the last true movie star?

Hear me out before you tell me I’m wrong and downvote me.

I was reading a post about how the Rock is getting paid $13 million more than Emily Blunt for the movie they’re starring in together, and someone pointed out that he’s getting paid more because he gets butts in seats and that a lot of people will go see a movie just because the Rock is in it.

That got me thinking. From anecdotal evidence at least, it used to be that many people would go see a movie solely based on the star, but now that only seems to be the case with the Rock.

So, is the Rock the last true movie star?

(PS: I’m sure at least one of you is going to tell me you go and see all of so and so’s movies solely because they’re in it.)

Thoughts on CAM (Netflix Original)

I noticed all those bad reviews of this movie after watching it. I thought so too at first but most people didn't realize that Cam was about the cam company using AI to make a photo/video realistic copy of you with all data they have collected from you to use a real-looking AI video streaming bot. It has a Black Mirror vibe and I find it fascinating and terrifying that this could be done in real life when I'm thinking of Nvidias technology that creates photorealistic fake faces with AI. So the company would save a lot of money paying off the real human streamers.

When there is a Trump biopic- how should it be done? What should it cover?

This is one of those movies where basically playing trump is a guaranteed Oscar nomination, as is the whole film in general, and it’s going to be pretty hyped up. Shit, in terms of political films or biopics, I can’t think of one that has or will be more hype than the Trump biopic.

Considering Bush got a biopic 2 years before he left office, this one could be announced in the next few years at some point. You essentially have these topics to choose from:

Trumps early life Trumps rise to being a multi millionaire Trump vs Hillary election Trump presidency/trump Russian scandal

Sooooo much material to cover I think we may need a Trump trilogy of films to cover all of it. Same actors would return for each movie.

So my questions are:

-Who should play Trump?

-Who should direct?

-Should the film demonize Trump, or try to provide context to his madness-maybe humanize him?

-Could you see it being a serious film(s)? Or a half serious, half comedy film.

Seriously folks, we know this film is coming one day. Just a matter of when

What should be the plot for Cloverfield 2 (like the direct sequel that has been confirmed)?

I loved the first movie and my 10-year-old mind was extremely hungry for a sequel at the time of its release as the ARG was mindblowing as fuck but the more I watch it, the better it works as a standalone. But if Drew Goddard, Matt Reeves and J.J. Abrams mapped out a sequel and a universe, I'm all for it oppose to them to make a sequel for the hell of it.

I'm just stuck as to where they can go next.

For some reason i have this memory of hearing about this person, who for some reason i think is a famous person, from a long time ago and what they would do is go out for a stroll or horse ride and they had a note pad or paper with them. and if they thought of something cool they would write it down and pin it on their shirt so they wouldnt lose it or something like that.

Does this sound like something anyone had heard about or would know who this person im trying to think of is?

Why am I anxious when asking my parents about stuff?

Most of the time, when I go to ask my parents about or for something, I get incredibly anxious. My face gets hot and red, I’m sweaty, and my hands are sometimes shaking. After I’m done talking I feel out of breath and shaky as hell. I’m completely fine talking to pretty much everyone else, as it happens mainly with them. Why is this happening to me? It started about a year or two ago and has gotten progressively worse.

Should this teacher be fired for the comments she made here?

Should my gym teacher get in trouble for these comments? I have this gym teacher in high school summer classes teaching my gym class who is young, (Younger than 30 I think) and she teaches physical education and English. She is a pretty cool teacher and nice. This is 12th grade with students about 17/18 We will be about to do the swimming unit. When she was describing what stuff you need to bring she mentioned to thethe class that the swimming unit is easier for girls because she can see all the boys without their shirts off and she Can see how you all really look and how fit you really are this they'll have to work harder. the comment doesn't bother me in the slightest , but if some kid who was around me decides to go cry about it, will she get in trouble? I talked to a friend of mine about it (who wasn't there) and he says it is wrong and she should get in trouble but I don't see why, I talked to another person and they said this was out of line and should be reported she was actually doing anything then I would agree. I am not going to say anything, she is a really good and nice teacher and I will not get her in trouble. Would you feel uncomfortable by this comment? Some people might say it is an encouraging comment. In fact most people laughed at the comment. even if she does get in trouble, should she really

I thought I agreed to a 2 year car lease but it was actually a 3 year lease - anything to be done now?

I was getting ready to return my car for what I thought was a 2 year lease. I emailed back and forth with the dealer ahead of time and over email we very clearly made a deal on a 2 year car lease. Two years later, I just tried to schedule an appointment to return the car and they told me that it was a 3 year lease connected to my VIN number. Lo and behold, I just went back and checked the contract and it is in fact a 3 year lease. I have my emails back and forth with the dealer saying that what I wanted was a 2 year lease, but the contract definitely says 3 years. So, obviously, my bad for not noticing the contract when I signed it two years ago. Is there anything that can be done about it now or am I stuck?

What iconic movies do you recommend I watch?

I never use to be a movie guy, but recently I started getting in to movies to understand pop culture references better and to just try a new medium overall. The Matrix, Pulp Fiction, The Godfather, Jaws, etc. I’ve never seen any of that stuff. I know that there’s a boatload of movies that can be called “iconic” but I’m sure that there’s a handful that the vast majority of people have seen, or that I should at least know about. It might just be a coincidence but...

So I recently watched The Incredibles 2 and noticed the the voice of Evelyn Deavor was voiced by Catherine Keener who also started in Get Out. SPOILER ALERT (for both)

In both movies her character uses hypnosis as a means to complete their dastardly ambitions.

Is this just a coincidence or was there at least some loose connection to the roles having a similar ability???

What’s a movie you saw in theaters where everyone clapped at the end?

I was just watching Lord of the Rings: Return of the King for the first in a long time, and it transported me back to the association that I have with when I saw it in theaters. I was about 15 when it came out, and the first time I recall an audience bursting out into applause when the credits rolled.

It’s only happened with a handful of movies I’ve seen in my life, but I always find it so cringe. Like clapping when an airplane lands. My question to you: what are movies you saw in theaters where this has happened? Has this happened??

On the hunt for a movie I vaguely remember

Hey r/movies I need some help trying to track down a movie I have a vague recollection of.

It was one of the premium movie networks back in the late 90's. I want to say it was either Showtime or Cinemax. There was a guy who was being turned into a bad boy by this girl. They went into this movie theater and sat in the back had sex. I think they were on the run from someone and the main guy got his family jewels blown off towards the end. I think this all happened with in the last 30 minutes or so of the film. For whatever reason these scenes have stuck with me and I would like to see the movie, or at least know the name so I can resolve this internal conflict.

Help me out....what movie is this

So, about 5 years ago I saw movie and I did not know the name of it. I was a little tipsy that night, but I have looked for 5 years for the title of this movie and literally no one has ever seen it, which makes me wonder if the movie is even real or not. But someone PLEASE help me out, what movie is this.

Before I tell you the premise, the movie isnt Happy Death Day.

The premise is a girl (teenage or late teens) is having these weird premonitions about her death. She is not exactly living the same day over and over, more like she knows how she is going to die and is trying to find out who the killer is before she gets killed. Here's the kicker, she knows where she is going to die, and has seen it but the only way to find out who the killer is, is to go in this basement where she is inevitably killed. So the killer lives out on some rural farm, and she ends.up.going out there to search for clues, she goes down in the basement, and wouldn't you know it, it's the basement from.her premonitions. She is trying to go back up the stairs, but the killer comes down and basically kills her.

The twist is at the end when she is dying, it is really the killer getting strangled. We then find out he is in purgatory because he was really dead the whole time and he is reliving the death of his victim.

The killer drives a pick up and is mostly in a hoody throughout the movie when the girl is getting close to discovering who he is.

Please help me with what movie this is, honestly it wasn't even that good. But, it bothers me that no one I have ever talked to about this movie knows about it

Since Brett Ratner is very clearly not coming back, who do you think should direct? I was really excited for this but momentum died as soon as it started, I'm assuming it's because of the whole Ratner scandal. If I remember, I think I remember reading that Kenya Barris turned down the chance to direct/write it. I'd love to see them do one more but I don't know who they would get. I like the idea of Justin Lin doing it though.

Update on Panzer 88?

Ever since 2014 and seeing the clip online of a featurette on an upcoming film called Panzer 88 where it follows a crew of a King Tiger Tank discovering a village massacared by the germans. From the desecration a Demon/Giant thing would be unleashed where the cree would be pitted against it.

I heard the movie was supposed to be coming out in 2016 or 2017 but then I have found nothing or any updates or news if the project was canceled or scrapped entirely. As the premise maybe out there but to enjoy the premise as a nice action/thriller I have been itching to see.

I have a link to the video but I have been struggling to find any other information regarding the film.

Millions of people unknowingly meet their potential soulmate, and never see them again

I've been thinking of this ever since the start of my current relationship. Now engaged and thinking back, the way we got together was a long line of coincidence. If I wrote it all down in a story, it'd be blasted as contrived and cheesy.

Sometimes... you meet someone at a place you'd only see them for 15 minutes of your entire life, but that person might be the one that will stick with you for your whole life.

Should I go with my brother or not?

So, my brother decided to give me as a christmas present a trip to Bratislava for 7 days (I'm from Italy), starting tomorrow. He said NOTHING about the booking,i already knew HE (alone) was going to Bratislava, with NO ONE ELSE. The only way he let me knew he was going to get me with him was 2 photos sent via whatsapp, the tickets one. I also was at a giant supermarket.

I decided to say nothing because since i'm a shy guy i didn't want to scream inside a supermarket filled with people.

Once we got outside, i told him i won't go there with him. I know I sound like a bastard, but you should think about it for a second. 1) You told me NOTHING about the trip and 2) You bought the tickets w/o my consent.

How the hell could he think i could've accepted that trip?

The only time i spend with my parents all together is either christmas or new year's eve, so i had another reason to be pissed off. With all the days i'm staying home from school, you decided exactly the week within New year's eve? Oh, come on.

Now i'm here thinking if i had a way too much overrated reaction, and maybe I should go with him.

Really need help here, my mind's probably going to blow, can't focus on a certain thing that my thoughts will always get on that fact.

TL;DR: Brother booked a trip without either my consent or letting me know. Halp.

Thanks for your time.

Edit: Grammar mistakes

I want to score movies/television as a profession, what should my major be?

I am currently attending community college and plan on transferring but the whole time I've been in school I haven't been able to get a solid concrete answer as to what my major should be. I don't want to choose the wrong major, any advise?

Followed home hypothetically what would you do

Earlier tonight this black car followed me to my girlfriends. I thought it was odd they were taking the same turns. When I reached my girlfriends house I parked in her driveway they approached shortly after. I parked in the driveway and they slowly parked right before her driveway which was around 20 yards away. I walked inside waited by the front door and turned around. They were still parked and about a minute or two later they slowly drove off. At first I thought it was a cop because I passed the vehicle at a high speed but not that much higher than the speed limit. The vehicle was all black and had very tinted windows didn’t even look like a police car. What would you do in my shoes? Be paranoid all night? Or brush it off?

Any movie sequels that brought back characters killed in an earlier movie and effectively retconned their deaths/pretended they didn't die or somehow survived what seemed like impossible situations?

I know they thought about doing this with Randy in "Scream 3". And "Scary Movie 2" doesn't count.

Old movies look better in my opinion

I recently watched Tora! Tora! Tora! from 1970 and noticed how natural and realistic the picture is. The same can be said for all color movies until the late 90s like Bullitt, Goodfellas or Terminator while todays flicks have this weird blue/orange filter which gives ugly visuals. Also the picture looks sort of flat nowadays. The camera work was also insofar better back then because the overall style was calmer for example we had steady cam, long takes, wide angles and similar. Now we have the opposite of it. What do you think?

The Dirty Harry movies are the best franchise. Change my mind.

So I like a good franchise. My definition of a good franchise is there can't be major weak links or obvious stretches for a money grab. Take Indiana Jones for example, 3 classics and a botched 4th. Lethal Weapon films are also a favorite of mine with all 4 films holding up well, but the TV show weakened the franchise as a whole. Harry Potter was solid until they stretched the final book into 2 movies. Lord of the rings was tainted by The Hobbit films. Tons of examples of this.

All 5 Dirty Harry movies are spot on. Sure there isn't much actual character development but it's a gritty cop franchise. All 5 deliver on that.

Dirty Harry - The intro, great bad guy

Magnum Force- great ethical questions

The Enforcer - deals with a woman trying to break into a traditional boys club

Sudden Impact - Good revenge flick with a motivated villain

The Dead Pool - creepy game with a mystery whodunit about the whole thing.

There is no need to watch these in any order. None of them were annoyingly left hinting at a sequel. They even address some racial issues that, when viewed through the 2018 woke scope, might not be perfect, they were addressed in a way very much of their time.

Sadly this will probably get tainted by a reboot shortly if there isn't one already in the works, but if anybody wants a good gritty cop franchise give ole Harry a watch.

Thanks for reading.

An Honest Review of Mortal Engines (This review will contain spoilers)

So, Mortal Engines, let's be honest. Peter Jackson is one of the best movie directors in the industry, and Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit rank among my personal favorite film series of all time. So, when I heard Mortal Engines was not only a box office bomb, but was also slammed by critics, I was rather surprised. It's got epic fight/chase scenes, amazing special effects with conventional models rather than CGI, what's not to love?

As it turns out, more than I expected. I wouldn't necessarily call the characters "flat," but it's the closest term I can think of. Hester Shaw is the girl that got screwed over by her mother's friend and wants revenge, Thomas is the city boy that wants to realize his dream of becoming a pilot, Valentine is the megalomaniac villain who builds a deadly weapon, Anna Fang is the rebel and leader of the resistance, and Shrike, where do I even begin with him? To be honest, I never really understood the point of having Shrike in the story. I get that he's there to add tension whenever Valentine is busy working on his city-destroying weapon, but ultimately, he's just a cyborg who takes other people's word a little too literally, and their attempt to lay it on thick with his death didn't impress and in fact nearly made me cringe.

As for the story, it was compelling at times, but outside of character development moments, it never really captivated me like Lord of the Rings did. Granted, there were moments outside the chase and fight scenes that were interesting, but many of these didn't come until the end, like the twist that Valentine is Hester's father. I also don't think the movie's premise is very believable. The premise is that Humans developed some kind of "quantum weapon," and used it to devastate the planet. Those that survived did so in giant mobile cities, preying on smaller cities to gather resources. Aside from the fact that there's this whole "we did this to ourselves" trope, which I never find believable, the idea of mobile cities just doesn't seem realistic. To move something as big as London would consume several hundreds of gallons of fuel per second. It's a little more believable, given that it's fueled by scrap rather than gasoline, but I still don't think that it would be feasible, either with modern technology or post-apocalyptic technology a thousand years from now.

I personally believe that the premise would've been better if it had been shown to us rather than told up-front, kind of like in Venom, or how Thomas coaxes Hester's story out of her. This is because it's generally more interesting to try to piece together the story's premise yourself, rather than have it told to you. Instead, we have Shrike (at least I'm assuming it was Shrike, because I'm not sure myself) tell us what happened as the opening credits roll.

Ultimately however, despite it's flaws, Mortal Engines does have it's good points, notably in the special effects, which were done with models rather than CGI, and that ultimately makes the movie look believable, at least at first glance. The fight and chase scenes were also really well done. Granted, I think a main character sacrificing themselves is more interesting than some background character doing so, like in the final battle against London, but it still is a great movie.

While the movie may be a revenge story, make no mistake. Mortal Engines is a monster movie, it's just with giant mobile cities instead of Godzilla. At one point, they even refer to London as "the beast," so that's what solidified it as a monster movie in my mind. If you're looking for a revenge story, then Mortal Engines is a reasonable inclusion in your "to watch" list. If you want said story to have great effects and epic chase scenes, then that's another check. If you want the story to be compelling however, then you should probably look somewhere else. I will say as a general audience member, I loved it. And while the premise may be unrealistic, I'll give it a pass only because it resulted in some epic-looking predator cities. I give Mortal Engines three stars out of five.
