Crush on TA? [Zoom Edition]
I (F18) have a crush on my TA(F) or SI (basically undergraduate TA). I like her but I haven’t gotten to know her personally or her have a one-on-one conversation with her since COVID. I can’t meet up with her either as the majority of the upper classmen have to take classes online (I assume she’s home).
I don’t know what I should do. Should I somehow communicate with her and get to know her and she if she’s into girls? Or should I wait for my school girl crush to go away? And how do you even flirt through zoom?
She’s a junior and I’m a freshman btw

Something I'd love to see in a future Sacha Baron Cohen movie/show is where he goes to a gay conversion camp and pretty takes the piss with the therapists or whatever there.
I think it'd be hilarious. He goes to one as a bi guy who wants to be straight or some shit and while he's there, he starts hitting on the male therapists, constantly makes gay sex jokes and when he leaves, he makes a joke about how his gay conversion therapy worked since he converted from being bi to gay.

How to give a thousand butterflies in a stomach of a girl that I like?
I am looking after a girl in my college, I asked her out, she agreed to "hangout" with me. I am at a stage where if everything goes well a potential of relationship could develop, or if it doesn't go well, I could get friend-zoned.
I never hung out 1-on-1 with a girl before, so I have a thousand questions on my mind!
TL;DR I want to ask these basic Questions:
- What can a boy do to make a girl happy?
- What can I do to give her a thousand butterflies in her stomach?
- How do I get close to her?
- What place should I take her? (I live in Boston, if that helps)
- How can I make sure we have a great and memorable time together!
- if things don't go well, I could get friend-zoned. So, I want to have a meaningful conversation with her to avoid getting friend-zoned. I just don't wanna talk about pointless stuff like judging the restaurant or the meal. I would like to talk about something that should change her perspective about me.

Spider-Man 3
I was re watching Spider-Man 3 and noticed a few things.
First, when Norman took the Goblin formula in Spider-Man 1, he when crazy. With a split personality. Why didn’t that happen to Harry in Spider-Man 3, after he took it?
Second, I know we saw Harry find Norman’s secret Goblin lair, but when did he build that? In the first one, he only had one glider, and the formula was at the lab. But in SM2 and 3, Norman had a whole secret toon with the gas chamber and everything. When did he get that?

In spider-man 1, after Norman becomes Goblin, he doesn’t remember the things that goblin does.
But then in the thanksgiving scene, he notices peters cut, and remembers that Goblin cut Spider-Man in the same way.
How is that possible? Before he always had no recollection of what Goblin did. So how did he remember that?
Or maybe at that point, Norman remembered exertion things, or Goblin told him about it?
What do you guys think? Thanks!

Gone in 60 Seconds is one of Nicolas Cage’s best movies.
I’ve seen this movie many times. However this time I noticed something. There’s a lot of green tint/color in this movie. The Diner scene has a lot of yellow. Of course red for the Ferraris.
It has a great cast. Nic of course crushes it. “Two Rodgers don’t make a right!” Timothy Olyphant, Robert Duval, even Vinnie Jones! I feel Angelina Jolie was a bit over the top with the dreads, but still enjoyable. Goivanni Ribisi was good, but a little winey at times.
The car boost were great. Eleanor boost and chase scenes were an excellent third act.
It would have been great to see a sequel to this.

Does bisexual people change their sexuality in parallel universe?
A friend of mine suddenly asked me that in a parallel universe do bisexual people stay bisexual or became something else, and we're just wondering since then but nothing discovered yet. I've google it tho but the results are not satisfying. Many articles described the opposite of bisexuality (as transsexuality, hetro, homo etc) but I really didn't get any useful information out of it. I also think that pansexuals are the one who would be asexual in parallel universe so I'm certain that bisexuals wont became asexuals in parallel universe. So what could they possibly be?

The Paul Haggis helmed film Crash is infamously known for winning Best Picture at the Oscars over Brokeback Mountain. Since then, it has been declared as one of the worst Best Picture winners of all time. Even now, a lot of people in the film fan community tend to regard this movie with disgust. But why? Why does Crash get all this hate? Is it for its portrayal of race relations? Is it because it's preachy and pretentious? Where does all the hate come from?

Circle(2015) isn't a bad movie
I recently watched this movie again and I actually enjoyed it more than I did four years ago. The plot is quite simple: "Fifty strangers facing execution have to pick one person among them to live".
The movie has pretty bad ratings on RT and similar websites, both from critics and audience. I don't think it's that bad though. The movie succeds at keeping the viewer curious and guessing where the plot will go. I came across a review saying it simplifies too much discussion about certain social issues but I don't think that's the case. Trying to take on different social issues in a movie likes this in dialogues that don't sound too artificial, "fake deep" or preachy is difficult, but Circle does a good job at making it realistic and scary, wheb you think how certain people would be treated in that situation.
It could've easily become repetitive and boring since we're stuck with these characters in this chamber for 1 hour and a half. But it doesn't. Even if doesn't have sharpest of scripts(although far from bad) the entertainment value of this project is still enough to keep me hooked. Also, the performances are mostly great and directing is nice. But the people and dialogue are the focus, technically there's not a lot to say about it. Very simple.
But anyway, at the end of the day it's not objectively good or bad.. people just perceive art in different ways. I'd definitely give this a positive review though lol
btw sorry for bad English.

Was supposed to get confirmed 2 years ago.. But I was in a public school in 7th grade and in 8th it was canceled for covid. Now I’m getting confirmed in a few weeks, and I’m wondering what colour my dress should be. I want to wear black, I’ve asked 2 friends and one is wearing white and the other is wearing black. Thanks!

Please recommend 2 good, ORIGINAL horror movies for me to watch over Halloween. Thank you.
After sitting through the one plot idea of ‘Bird Box’, I realise that Netflix UK are probably not going to deliver a decent fix of Halloween movies for me, so I’m throwing this one out to the Redditors.
Films in the genre that I like include ‘Hereditary’ , ‘Hush’ , ‘John Dies at the End’ ‘As Above, So Below’, ‘The Others’ and ‘The Blair Witch Project.’ It doesn’t have to be gory, just as long as it has a plot that isn’t a mish-mash of stolen ideas; something DIFFERENT.
My grateful thanks in advance...

I was harassed at a mental hospital
I just got out of a mental hospital. I was at Promedica Flower hospital in Sylvania, Ohio because my sister lied on me and said I threatened her. I was there for almost two weeks. The whole time I was there I was harassed. The doctors and nurses harassed me. A female nurse kept asking me do I want to go for a walk and said "tell me what you like and we can do more of that". A male doctor got down on his knees in front of me with his legs open touching my legs. Two male doctors blocked the door to the room I was in so I couldn't leave. I have to go to the doctor again next month and I'm scared I might see them there. I don't want to go. I don't know what to do. I'm trying to avoid going but they are forcing me to go.

Can someone help me figure out these details from I'm thinking of ending things?
Around 10 minutes in the camera zooms in on Jakes lips and they look odd (can't remember exactly what was wrong with them). Did they just look old like the janitors?
Around 15 minutes in, while Lucy recites the poem, we get a shot outside of the car and we can't hear Lucy for a few seconds, then we go back in the car to hear the rest of the poem. What part did we miss?
Towards the end of their visit, Jakes father hugs Lucy and she starts crying. Was jake abused by his parents? He clearly holds resentment towards them, during the meeting scene he just shook his hand and didn't want his mother to touch him.
During the last scene with Lucy and Jake in the car Lucy randomly has a black eye for a single shot which dissappears in the next one. Was he imaging a scenario in which he was abusive towards her because of all the self hatred, even in his fantasy he had to be a bad person? The briefness of it was odd though.
At tulsa town there girl claims its smell because they're burning something, then later says it's because of something else. What actually is it?
They kept repeating the word Treacherous. Same with the chains but that seemed like a metaphor for her being trapped or chained down, not sure what significance the word Treacherous has though. No one is betrayed or being deceptive really, except for the movie I guess.
What is the meaning of these details? I haven't read the book, does it answer any of my questions?

I've never had a girlfriend but what I've seen through the internet, my friends and they're relationships, and movies etc. it's that girls DO NOT ACCEPT when they're wrong! Even fighting with the females in my life I have noticed this.
In relationships though, it seems the guys always gotta do the apologizing... why is that? Why can't girls apologize? Or beg for forgiveness? Why do guys do this more? Can someone explain.

Movies with no fat
I watched Addams Family Values last night and I came to the realization that every single line was a banger. There’s not one exchange in the movie that isn’t instantly quotable, all of the scenes move the plot forward, every shot is deliberate and focused. It’s just an incredibly tightly plotted and executed movie, ie no fat, no filler.
Not to mention all of the performances are phenomenal (Raul Julia, Joan Cusack and Christina Ricci being the standouts for me personally).
Can you think of any other movies like this? That have punchy dialogue and don’t waste a minute?

If you liked Thunder Road, watch - The Climb!
Just got home from the cinema from a back to back showing of the climb and pixie. Both so much fun (esp pixie, hilarious throughout) but anyway this movie will go underwatched and underappreciated no doubt so heres me mentioning it as it deserves. Weaker than Thunder road but still really good in its own right
My quick review:-
This was just as surprising as i expected to be, unpredictable in the sense that you don't know where one thing will go from another. Gave me thunder road vibes, anyone who dug that will enjoy this. There are several sequences and all of them are (mostly) shot in one take, which is seriously impressive. The camerawork and cinematography were great. The acting was pretty excellent too (weaker at times), the first half was slightly superior to the second which is why this isn't a 4 for me. Darkly funny at times and an overall really good time.
- 3.5/5.
Thank you for the read!

How does Hollow Man look just so.. Good?
First time I've seen it so it's via Amazon Prime on my Roku..
It's a super silky smooth upscale with incredible CGI that looks just... So real.. Was it remade for amazon or is this how it looked at the time? My missus says it was this good on release but I doubt as it's clearly far higher frame rate and animation resolution than anything else of the time.
Am I watching a true gem like Jurrasic Park or is this a sneaky upgrade? Either way I am not complaining as it is a very well made movie and as always...

I'm predicting that eventually studios will start "remastering" the classic CG films by doing this type of thing. Imagine keeping everything the same; animation, voices, models, etc. but re-rendering the entire film with the latest technology.
Essentially Toy story would take place in a physically accurate rendered world and all the cool visuals and tech that accompany that. Would you go see it?

For those who have watched or read Call Me By Your Name, what are your thoughts on the age difference between the two central characters?
I’ve just stopped watching the film version at like the 1hr mark for a few mins to attempt to rationalise my thoughts. It’s ironic given the story’s premise and the joie de vivre that infuses the film, but I’m having trouble overcoming my prejudices. The age difference is such an integral part of the plot, and the actor who plays Elio looks pretty young.
I know that I’m being obtuse and close minded. It’s really dumb of me to focus on this element in such a light when there’s so much to love about it. It’s a beautiful and heartfelt exploration of identity, desire and love, and yet I can’t tear myself away from thinking about the fact that Elio is 17. It’s kind of pathetic lol.
Idk, I was just wondering what random internet strangers think about it.

“Cool” ways to greet someone non-verbally?
I’m new to Reddit and this is really random and will probably be a little long, so I’m not sure if this is the best place to be posting this or not, but here goes.
So I started working at a new job about two months ago, and I really like it! It’s at a major retail store, so there’s lots of coworkers in a lot of different departments that I’m still getting used to. I’ve slowly been talking to more and more of them and it’s been great. I work at the customer service desk at the front of the store, so I don’t interact with a ton of the other departments. I’m very comfortable with all of the other customer service people because I’m always working and talking directly with them, but it’s been slower with some of my other coworkers simply because we don’t cross paths as often. But I’ve still been trying to learn as many names and people as I can and I really like everyone I’ve met.
I should also say that while I’m a very people oriented type of person, I also have pretty crippling general anxiety at times and I’m shy by nature. I love being around people but I’m introverted so it’s very difficult for me to initiate conversations. But once the ice is broken, I won’t shut up! It’s just that I usually end up waiting on the other person to do the breaking. I’m working on it.
Anyway, I have sort of a unique situation with one of my coworkers in particular. I work at the very front of the store, but sometimes I have to run back to our secondary storage area to retrieve items for curbside/in store pickup. To get there I have to walk past our Asset Protection guy, many many many times a day. He has a small kiosk to the side of the main aisle when you first walk in and I have to go past him to get to the holding area for pickup items. In the two months that I’ve been there I’ve literally only spoken to him maybe twice. There’s only 3 people that work for asset protection and my shifts seem to line up him in particular, a lot. So I constantly see him, but our departments rarely ever overlap unless there’s a major issue with a customer. So in all the time I’ve been there and seen him, we’ve not really ever spoken. And because I’m so anxious and awkward, I’ve never attempted to initiate a conversation.
He seems really cool and down to earth, and I’d love to have a good work friend. While at work today, I think I had just finally felt so awkward that it had been such a long time of us seeing so much of each other but never actually talking, and I started overthinking it way too much. So, out of complete impulse and lack of social prowess, when I was walking by him today, I shot him a peace sign. A PEACE SIGN!!! And no words. Barely even a facial expression. Just a peace sign. Why?? Was I trying to play it cool? No clue. I’ve literally never even made eye contact with him when I walk past, or waved, so I don’t know where my decision to do a PEACE SIGN came from. He was really confused by it but it did actually end up breaking the ice and throughout the rest of our shift we were joking and pointing out how incredibly awkward I was and laughing at how I made things even more uncomfortable now because now we both feel obligated to make eye contact every time I walk by him. Which is literally at least a hundred times a day. So.
As awkward as it was, it was actually nice to now be joking and talking like normal coworkers and I can definitely see us being good friends at work. Towards the end of the day, he gave me some “homework”. He said I needed to practice my conversation starters a little more and maybe think of some better gestures to say hi with other than a peace sign. And also get better at eye contact. Lol.
So here’s my question. As lame and corny as this is, I was hoping for some ideas on cool ways I can greet him next time we work together so I can switch it up. Work is a lot of fun and I genuinely love interacting with all of the customers, but as with any retail job it can be draining and exhausting to deal with customers all day, especially during the pandemic, and ESPECIALLY now during the holiday season. so I figured a little wholesome fun with a coworker couldn’t hurt. We could all use a little corniness sometimes to give us a break from how serious the world is, and if through my awkwardness I can be a small moment of relief for one of my coworkers or anyone, then I’m cool with that.
I’ve thought of a salute, some finger guns, and the classic thumbs up. But after that I don’t know. Maybe a curtsy? Any ideas?? The lamer the better! I embrace it.

Dredd (2012) is in the 'John Wick' tier of pure fun 2010s action movies.
This movie is an absolute fucking blast from minute 1. The world building, the simple but effective plot, the cheese, and the brutalism all together are peerless in the last decade. It may not have the extensive choreography of John Wick, but the soundtrack is fueled up and the cast is full of unique, storied characters. The world is alive, and you're constantly reminded that this episode is nothing more than a small sliver in the story that Mega City 1 has to tell.
Highly recommend, 10/10

Should I watch The Irishman in multiple sittings?
3 hours and 30 minutes long. Considering the amount of schoolwork I have recently, I don’t have a lot of time to watch it in a sitting. I have also never watched a movie this long except for Return of the King which was fine as it was mainly action.
I was reading a twitter post of someone who split it into 4 TV episodes but the replies got so angry, saying how it’ll completely break the mood and pacing. So I don’t know, should I watch it in multiple sittings? Does it affect the overall experience?
Also just a side note, I watched The Hateful Eight extended edition split into 4 episodes on Netflix, didn’t ruin my experience at all.

What movie nailed it's concept so well that no one's going to try to touch it again
(...until the inevitable reboot/remake)
I'll throw Jurassic Park down as a prime example. It's going to be hard for anyone to throw down a humans vs dinosaur movie any time soon, with a chance of touching the classic.
First up, those only so many avenues you can use to set up the conceit. It's either time travel to the past, or "we clone them from last DNA" (feel free to think of more!).
All this would be up for grabs, but Jurassic Park got it close to perfect: not only do we have the ticket price of humans and dinosaurs - "two species separated by 65 million years of evolution, suddenly thrown back into the mix together" - but we have a morality tale, filled with character arcs, sprinkled with top of his game early 99s Spielberg, and founded on a great piece of literature by Michael Crichton.
The SFX were used sparingly enough to hold their value over time, and frankly Rexy is such an icon of cinema that it would be tough to do your own spin on a T-Rex without comparisons.
So that's my nomination for a film where the concept was nailed so well, it is going to be tough or almost impossible for a film to escape it's shadow.

How to make a change in your career? Software Developer --->
It is specifically a question to all you Software Developers/Engineers out there, regardless feel free to chime in. I have been a software developers for 4.5 years. I am not looking to change my career right away but I am starting to feel I may not be able sustain this career in long term. Currently I like it, it is challenging, I learn new things and give enough time to my work (especially because I don't have a family to take care of rn, which would change in next couple of years).
I am looking for some suggestions, how to go about making a switch, should I consider an MBA? What are other options out there? That still make fulfilling career but may be not as overwhelming.

Does anyone else have a partner that does this?? Why do I do this???
She has told me that I've done this in the past but I didn't believe it. She said I usually pull her underwear half way down, kiss her, spank her, and grab her boobs. She said that she'll typically say, "Ohh you want it." or "Oh you're having good dreams.", and I don't respond.
I don't remember any of this and I usually don't remember my dreams.
So, why and does anyone else experience this or has experienced this?

Borat
I watched Borat today for the first time in years. I have to say its a completely different movie than the one I remember seeing years ago. I never realized that this movie is much much more than a comedy, it is funny and you’re supposed to laugh but like...people have been saying this movie is racist, anti-Semitic, homophobic all these things, its the non PC humor that isn’t allowed anymore. In my opinion, Borat says and does these things to make a point how wrong and real it is, not really poking fun at the group. I just wanna talk about three scenes that really stand out to me and I found very powerful.
The first is when Borat is at the Rodeo. He sings the national anthem and changes the words singing about how Kazakhstan is number one. Borat gets booed by everyone. He’s then talking to a cowboy and goes to do his kiss kiss on the cheeks and the cowboy makes a point how he shouldn’t do that because that’s what homosexuals do and Borat should watch out and avoid them. Borat responds with how in his country they lock them up in jail and kill them, the cowboy laughs and says they got the right idea thats what “we’re” trying to do here. This stuck out because I felt Sacha Baron Cohen was showing how obviously these southern all-american terrorist hating rednecks actually have a LOT in common with these other countries they claim to hate.
The next scene was the one where Borat finally burns the baywatch magazine and falls asleep outside a church. In the morning you see all these Christian’s stepping over him to get into church. Not one person checks on this guy sleeping on the ground out front. They film the church service which is all about love and all the shit that if you really lived by you wouldnt step over some poor sleeping man. I felt it really accurately showed how certain religious people who claim to love everyone and want to better the world really don’t care about anyone but themselves.
The last one I would like to mention is in my opinion, the most important scene and take away of the entire movie and I was absolutely shocked watching it. Borat attends the magnolia mansion dinner party. During the party Borat goes to the bathroom and returns to the table with his shit in a plastic bag. Everyones kinda bugging and this woman calmly takes him into the bathroom and explains how he needs to clean himself and flush. Let me say it again one more time, Borat brought human shit in a bag to the dinner table. After this incident Borat invites a black female prostitute over. This same woman who was okay with him bringing shit to the table decides a black prostitute is where she draws the line and they call the police and throw them both out. They threw him out for inviting a black prostitute over ONLY TO EAT but didn’t kick him out for bringing poop around their food. Now they film this movie using real people and Borat is the only character really, this was peoples real response. Borat ends up taking this black woman out for a little and at the end of the movie he actually stops back at her house to see her again. I feel like there were emotions happening off camera between Sacha and this woman because there was a different vibe about this moment then any other part of the movie. I felt so badly for this woman and I think he was really trying to cheer her up after that horrible incident. I can’t even describe it that well. I highly recommend rewatching to anyone who hasn’t seen it in a long time.
I’m definitely sure there are other people who have seen this in his movies and seen that they are much more than filthy humor to make you laugh and to make fun of other groups. To anyone thinking this movie is whats wrong with the world (seen a lot of tweets like that) I recommend watching it again and trying to see it from the perspective that Sacha Baron Cohen is trying to prove a point and actually help.
EDIT: Luenell Campbell is the actress who played the prostitute in the movie. I had no idea she was an actress and I’m really happy to learn this information because I (like many others) mistaken her for being an actual prostitute. I’m really happy she was able to be in on what was going on but nonetheless sad those people still treated her that way who were not in on what was happening with Borat

The Rudy scene in the new Borat movie is overblown. It’s not at all as bad as the reviews implied (Spoilers within)
Essentially Borat’s daughter is posing as a reporter and trying to get him to sleep with her. She invites him back to the bedroom for drinks (in the context of the fictionous part of the film, she IS trying to get Rudy to sleep with her), Rudy pats her lower back and asks for her number/address as the daughter removed the mic on Rudy. Rudy has his hands down his pants but is putting his shirt back. The editing is from a mirror view and switches to a view on the bed, so it’s hard to tell how long this lasts. Borat then bursts in the room.
Rudy enters the room at 1:21:41, Borat yells to them at 1:22:06 and is on camera at 1:22:08. The entire encounter in the room is less than 30 seconds of film.
I don’t like Rudy at all but it’s not some revelation of him being a pedo.

Best Child Performances
It's very difficult to direct children in movies, children aren't trained actors and it's very difficult to get them to act the way that's required. Henry Thomas in ET is one of the all time great child acting performances, he feels incredibly natural and is a very endearing character. Watching him go from such elation with ET and his deep sorrow when he passes is a force to behold. His audition where he cries about his dead dog shows how much acting skill he really has. Steven Spielberg is someone who understands how to direct children and trying to get as much genuine reactions out of Thomas and filming in sequence really helps his performance.
Another great one is Haley Joel Osment who did a great job in AI. He makes the character feel human and lived in but just odd and robotic enough that you see that something's off about him. He does a great job anchoring the movie. Osment is also excellent in the Sixth Sense, the I see dead people scene and the final scene he has with his mother are a testament to how much depth he has in his performance. Osment is very good at communicating pain in his characters. It's unfortunate he hasn't had the same success in his adult years.
More recently though Taika Waititi has been very good at directing child actors. Roman Griffin Davis was one of my favorite performances of 2019, Jojo is an adorable kid that is incredibly confused. He nails the comedic timing and plunges head onto the dramatic scenes. Davis's acting the climax of the movie is incredibly poignant and he captures how blindsided and hurt Jojo is. Davis does a great job of straddling the line between drama and comedy blending them together in his performance. Waititi mentions that when he directs children he tries to find ones that are similar to the characters that they are playing so they don't need to act as much and just have to learn lines. He directed James Rollestone and Julian Dennison incredibly well in Boy and Hunt for the Wilderpeople as well.
What are some other great modern child performances? I thought Finn Wolfhard did a good job in It and the first season of Stranger Things but his performance sort of weak in the more recent season of the show. Abraham Attah in Beasts of No Nation was incredible especially for someone who had never acted before and I was pretty astounded by Jacob Tremblay in Room.

Have you been to jail or prison? Then I have a question that desperately needs answering. (Only ppl who have been to jail/prison please)
Hi there! First off, thank you for stopping to read this.
Now, to the reason for my post.
I am a graduate student and I have decided to focus on the correctional system and address an issue that I have become aware of.
I choose this issue because for the project we are asked to first start small so here it is.
During intake you are asked to be naked, bend over, spread your butt cheeks and cough.
Can you tell me about the process leading up to this How this procedure made you feel What happened during the process And anything else you want to share relating to this.
Thank you for your time and hopefully one day, together, we can fix this very broken system.

If it is somehow the landlords fault (which is the only reason i can think of) How should i go about it? it’s honestly really annoying.

So my fiancee and I live in a nice-ish apartment complex. There are two buildings with 4 apartments per building. Most of our neighbors are very nice and we've not had a single problem with them. However there's these two young guys that moved into the apartment behind ours, in the same building.
So really quickly I should mention that my fiance works 3rd shift, and I work from home, so we adjust to his schedule, meaning we sleep most of the day and are up most of the night. This was never a problem until these new neighbors moved in. They are so noisy! The loudest people I've ever heard, and I wish I was exaggerating. They slam everything they use constantly, stomp around, and talk so loud we can both veru clearly hear their entire conversations. They also make noises we're unsure of. There is often a loud and frequent banging that rattles the walls, and occasionally will even knock things off our shelves. To top ot off, they recently got a puppy that barks and howls almost constantly the entire day. Several of the other tennants have dogs, but we rarely ever hear them.
We tired to ignore it, and chalked it up to them just being loud due to moving in, but it's been almost two months now, and the noise is still almost constant. So my fiancee and I decided to talk to them about it and we explained our situation to them, and politely asked if it would be alright if they could keep it down a little bit. They seemed dismissive but didn't try to hassle us or anything. The noises didnt stop. About a week or so after that we decided to contact our landlord to see if there was anything he could do, but he said since it wasn't during quiet hours (9am and 9pm) he couldn't do anything, and we're now unsure what to do.
My fiancee and I are starting to suffer from sleep deprivation, and decided to play white noise from a speaker while we were sleeping to try and block out the noise, but we can hear them over it, and arw starting to get desperate.
Is there anything we can do, reddit? Any suggestions or ideas? We just want to sleep.

Pulp Fiction essay topic help
Hello
I have to write an essay about a horror film, but the instructor has opened it up to include crime/drama films. Pulp Fiction has always been one of my favorite films and I thought it'd be easy to write about.
The point of this essay is to analyze gender or cultural influence in terms of how gender impacts the characters’ actions or how culture impacts a change in plot/scenes/action. I have a pretty good familiarity of the film, but the prompt has me stumped.
Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated. I am willing to write about a more traditional horror film if this movie isn't compatible with the prompt.
Edit: Thank you all for the feedback. I will be online periodically.

Movie reccomendation
Hello everybody, I recently watched tenet and enjoyed it tremendously. I’m now in the mood for a similar movie, one that consists of intelligence agencies, secret missions, secret societies, billionaires, that kind of thing. Preferably not James Bond films which are pretty on the money with what I’m after but something different would be nice. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

What are some films that were made by the wrong person?
I watched The Trial of the Chicago 7 and it functions well and delivers the pace and wit you'd expect from a Sorkin courtroom drama but it didn't feel like the approach the story needed. Where's was the passion? The fire? The fury? It's depicted in the film, but I didn't feel it in the filmmaking.
The cast absolutely is fantastic but they're in need of a more revolutionary or countercultural film, where this one felt shackled to ill fitting narrative conventions. It's a crowdpleaser, and this story should not please the crowd. It doesn't feel like the right story to play it safe with, narratively or culturally.
What are some other films that are otherwise good, just made by the wrong person or told with the wrong approach?

Best Jean-Claude Van Damme movie?
Similar to Steven Seagal, Van Damme hasn't been on the anyone's cinematic radar for the past two decades. He'll pop up in Expendables and Kung Fun Panda but that's pretty much it. Still, that doesn't mean his movies weren't awesome. Why is the American Colonial Guile played by a Belgian with an accent? Because it's Van Damme! That's why! The late 80s and 90s were the Golden Age of Van Damme so what is your favorite of his? If you want, dive into his 2000s work as well!

Cloverfield (2008) is only one of a few found-footage movies I actually recently enjoyed enough that I'm now watching the "sequels"
I usually avoid found-footage movies. They just don't do it for me. I suppose I always felt they cheapen the movie, and it gets tiring with everything shaking around. But last night, I decided to watch it on Tubi and it was a tense ride! I came away actually appreciating the dread and the suspense of the movie, something it translated for me quite well. Tonight, it's 10 Cloverfield Lane, and then The Cloverfield Paradox.
Side note: the only other (few) found footage movies that I enjoyed were V/H/S 1, 2 and slightly 3.

All they do is make noise and blow debris from either one part of your property to another or onto someone else's property. Furthermore, the nomenclature is poor, only 87.5% of what they blow is actual frond. They're inefficient.

Need help figuring out how to get the l2 and r2 triggers on a DS4 to register on a PS3.
So I had the urge today to get back on my old ps3, so I drug it out, blew the dust off. And hooked it up. I couldn't find a controller however, but I was able to get my DualShock4 linked via Bluetooth to the Ps3. Everything works, for the most part, except the triggers. I'm trying to play some Oblivion, as it's been probably 4 years since I've played it, but I have to pick between blocking and spells with button mapping. Anyone know of a way to fix this? Thanks!
Also, less important, but the diagonal pathing with the thumbsticks doesn't seem to be registering correctly either, but this is manageable. A fix for this would just be a bonus!

I'm trying to remember what movie has on-screen text (possibly when transitioning to a new scene location) that comes in as one language (possibly an alien language) then animates to english, or vice versa. Similar to what they did in the Black Panther credits but I'm sure it was an older movie than that. https://www.artofthetitle.com/title/black-panther/

Trying to find the title of possibly the 80’s/90’s most obscure and unknown sci-fi/drama movie
I saw this movie, somewhere around 92, on late night tv. I’ve never found anyone that knows what it’s called. The movie is set at the then present, I believe, and revolves around a man suffering depression. He decides to commit suicide. At the exact moment he kills hisself, the world ends. Everyone else does, and he somehow survives. He begins to live again. Doing whatever he likes. Dressing and eating how we he wants. He enjoys this moment alone. He then somehow bumps into a girl. While not admitting it at first, She too has survived only because she was trying to kill herself, and has been roaming around, thinking she was all that was left of humanity. They soon begin to find others, and start to fight amongst themselves. That’s all I remember, unfortunately. I’ve no idea at all what it’s called, or who it starred. I do remember enjoying it, and I’d love to find it to watch again.

The King of Masks (China, 1996) is a fantastic movie that pretty much anyone would like. The child star, 10-year-old Renying Zhou, gives a wonderful performance. And... it seems to be the only film Zhou ever made. Plot description follows.
PLOT: In 1930s China, an aging street performer has perfected the art of storytelling with instantly-changing masks. Tradition holds that he can only pass his trade secrets to a male heir. But he has no children -- his wife ran off decades ago, and their only child died when he was 10. He encounters child traffickers selling the children of poor families, and buys a young boy to adopt as his grandchild.
Trailer here, but if you haven't seen the movie I suggest not watching the trailer, as it gives away a major plot point.
I really think anyone would like this movie, which is in Chinese with English subtitles available. I was really, really impressed with Renying Zhou's naturalistic performance as the boy. I went to check the imdb page, and was astonished that this seems to have been Zhou's only role ever.

The movie was shot in 2018 or 2019. I dont know much about the story, few things I remember:
There was a girl who was (kidnapped??) by a bad, killer robot, who raised her. Then she leaves him and she wants to kill him. There was also a guy who helped her. In my head is also something about colored light in the robot?? I am not sure.
Only movie I can find is I am Mother, but that's not right.

Can anyone help me remember the name of this Netflix horror movie?
Not sure if this is allowed in this sub, but I read all the rules and didn't see anything about asking for help with a movie title. Sorry if not allowed.
I watched this scary movie on Netflix maybe a year or two ago. I'm pretty sure (but not 100% positive) that Netflix produced it.
I don't remember a lot about it, but I do remember that at the very end, there was a plot twist that this old guy who was always sitting down was really dead all along, and his wife (I think) had been controlling his body like a puppet.
Anybody seen this? It's been driving me crazy that I can't remember.

Any cool movie coincidences?
Anyone ever unintentionally watch a movie that has some plot point that eerily lines up with some real world fact? For example I am watching Blow the Man Down and a character goes to unlock a safe and the code is October 17. (Also yesterday I watched a show called Lore and it discussed a woman whose body was dug up after being accidentally buried alive. It happened on Oct 16) but this isn’t a tv show sub so who cares.
Your turn. Have you ever watched a movie that you had no idea would feature some detail or tidbit of info that aligned neatly with the real world?

Random shower thought on the Matrix and "self image"
I don't remember the exact quote from the movie but when Morpheus takes Neo into the training program Neo asks about why he looks the way he does and Morpheus explains that it has to do with how Neo sees himself / remembers himself.
While I don't think I'll go so far as to call it a "plot hole" that somebody who has never actually seen his real world physical body just happens to perceive himself to look the same as that actual physical body, I do wonder how many people in the Matrix this hold true to... If they do make a new Matrix movie, it would be interesting to see a person wake up from inside of the Matrix and their real world body is actually played by another person. The other person could simply be a different person, or could be a different color, different gender, etc. This, if done right, could be an interesting thought... experiment (I'm not sure that's exactly how I want to phrase that, but can't think of something better at the moment) regarding self identity.

Plot holes in "Terminator" franchise?
I'm finally getting around to watching Terminator: Dark Fate and a couple of thoughts occurred to me:
1) In the first movie, it's established that non organic materials cannot go back in time. Kyle Reese and the T-800 both were able to travel in time because of the biological / organic components. Kyle because he's human and the T-800 because he's cybernetic / a cyborg and has organic elements around the robotic skeleton. This is why neither could bring weapons from the future or even clothing.
But, in Terminator 2, we get the T-1000... the "liquid metal" terminator. The key word there being metal. It does not have an organic component, so why is it able to travel back in time? One could make an argument that the terminators of Genysis (T-3000 "John Conner") and Dark Fate (the Rev-9) are on different timelines and thus likely have different time travel methods, making that restriction no longer valid, but that doesn't excuse T-2. (If I'm forgetting something from T-2 that explains this, please remind me)
2) Part of the Dark Fate storyline essentially retcons everything after T-2. While this is a typical plot/story piece in each movie (Judgement day changes as a result of what happens in an earlier set Terminator movie), the change in Dark Fate leads to a big flaw in the movie's logic. If Skynet was taken out of existence at the end of T-2, which Dark Fate makes clear is the case since "Legion" is the new evil AI and "Karl" knows that Skynet no longer exists, then there was no Skynet to create and send "Karl" back to 1998 as that 1998 is the new "no Judgement day" timeline. If the Skynet of T-2 sent another Terminator to 1998, then it would have gone to the T-2 timeline's 1998 where Sarah and John had not wiped the entirety of the AI from existence.

What makes a hammy performance a GOOD hammy performance?
Actors who chew the scenery and go HUGE for comedic effect are often grating. Jim Carry, Chris Farley, Mr Bean - definitely gifted - but not everyone enjoys those performaces.
But Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future is universally beloved. Or Alan Rickman in Robin Hood. About half the cast of The Princess Bride. Madeline Kahn in anything. Is it there something about those performances that they pull off that most actors can't -how do they do it? Or is it good writing? Or is it all just camp?
I am not getting into hammy drama (Al Pacino, Nic Cage). I think that's separate.

Foxcatcher is a powerful movie.
Spoilers ahead.
Right off the bat, you feel sympathy for this guy, Mark Schultz. He’s so emotionless, so drained. Whenever he stretches or exercises, his face is blank. Whenever he eats, his face is blank. You can’t help but feel for him.
I thought Channing Tatum delivered a career-best performance. His rare emotional breakouts in the movie felt so raw because they’re so very sudden and you don’t know when he’ll break. Steve Carell gave an amazing performance as John du Pont, the guy who takes Mark, and his brother Dave, played by Mark Ruffalo, under his wing. Every scene with him was so unsettling and creepy. He really captured the way the real John du Pont behaved and spoke.
Mark Ruffalo. He was excellent in this movie as well. Whenever you see him on screen, he’s just such a bright light in the midst of whatever horrible situation the characters may be in. He’s always reassuring Mark, trying to help in every way possible, being a great brother. It’s a shame about what happened to him at the end.
Bennett Miller’s directing is great, too. He brought something to this movie that was totally different from Moneyball, another great film. I thought he captured the intense ambiance of every scene very well.
A wonderful movie with fantastic directing and top-notch acting. I thought this movie was robbed at the Oscars in 2015. It’s great that Mark and Steve were nominated, but Channing should have been too, in my opinion. He’s not in many “Oscar-worthy” type films, but this one... he went all in.
Recommendation over.
