Movies that are awful but compared to other movies that are similar that are even worse
Are there any movies that aren't any good but, compared to movies like it or other movies in the directors/actors/filmmakers/work, what have you aren't so bad by comparison?
Date Movie is an awful movie but, compared to some of Seltzerberg's other movies, it's not quite as bad. It at least tried to parody romantic comedies. It did have a lot of random parodies of things that were popular at the time but it also did parody a lot of romantic comedies as well, it just did it terribly. Plus Date Movie at least parodied movies that were more than 2-3 years old. Starting with Epic Movie, Seltzerberg just stuck to parodying stuff that came out within a couple years after the "movie" in question came out and they just parodied whatever the hell they wanted to.
I will say Superfast, the only movie they've made that I've seen since Disaster Movie, is the same thing. It's not good at all but it at least tried to stick to being a parody of The Fast and the Furious movies, it just wasn't a very good one.
Not only that but Date Movie is their least ugly movie seeing as it mostly parodies movies that are somewhat grounded in reality. Sure there are cheap looking scenes (the Cat Pooping scene comes to mind) but, because they mostly don't parody fantasy movies like Epic Movie or Meet the Spartans did, the production values of Date Movie for the most part look like something out of a real movie rather than a bad Youtube skit like Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans, and Disaster Movie do.

Anyone else confused about John Ottman's Oscar win?
I'm not talking about why he won or the quality of Bohemian Rhapsody. That's a whole different discussion. I'm talking about what he won for.
For those unaware, John Ottman won the Oscar for Best Film Editing.
I immediately recognized his name when he was announced as the winner, I just couldn't put my finger on from where. I brushed it off because I often research movies and their cast members so I probably saw him credited as an editor on another movie at some point.
Fast forward to today. I am driving to work listening to a station based on film scores from Google Play Music and a song from the soundtrack of X-Men: Days of Future Past starts playing. I really liked the song so I looked down at my phone to see what it was called and that's when I saw it. Who composed the music for this particular X-Men movie? John Ottman.
It turns out, it looks like he has composed for loads of movies, including Bohemian Rhapsody!
I have never heard of a composer also being a film editor. I looked him up and it seems he has even done double duty on some movies, composing the score then turning around and editing the entire film!
Is this normal? It seems really strange to me that a big budget Hollywood movie wouldn't have at least two different people performing these roles.

Name a film where you have struggled to decide if you liked it or not
I'll start with Bohemian Rhapsody. I love Queen and the film captured the band's appeal, Rami Malek was incredible as Freddie Mercury and I was impressed by the Live Aid recreation.
I however disliked the tinkering with Queen's timeline, some cliched plot elements, some bizarre editing and of course, Bryan Singer.
What about everyone else?

Movies you used to like as a kid but then realized were awful later on
What's a movie like that for you?
Epic Movie
When I was 14, I saw it in the theater and laughed my ass off. I loved it so much I bought the DVD, watched the unrated cut, and realized it sucked.
Then I saw Meet the Spartans in theaters and thought it sucked too and realized that I just kinda grew out of Seltzerberg's style of humor. I didn't even see Disaster Movie in theaters, I just saw it on the internet, and I didn't even bother with Vampires Suck or most of their VOD work, except for Superfast, which was better than most of their movies but pretty forgettable...

Opening exposition
Do you mind opening expansion? I don't especially if it's done by a narrator at the beginning or between big time jumps. It depends on the way it's used rather I like it or not but it's never been a deal breaker for me.
I understand most writers want to do bring it up naturally but sometimes it's hard to naturally bring up all the needed information. And trying to shoe horn it it ends up breaking the disbelief and wasting more time than just having a narrator directly say it would.
The point is opening narration isn't always a bad thing. And you shouldn't always listen to Cinema Sins. God bless :-)

How intense is Noe’s ”Climax?”
From what I’ve heard of this movie it definitely sounds like something up my alley: subversive, colorful, musical featuring electronic and hip-hop (?), and dark.
But I’ve also heard this director has made a career out of violating the senses with incredibly disturbing imagery something that I...can tolerate in small to moderate doses, but anything that seems to go overboard (like say, Hostel or Human Centipede), I am not into.
So, how disturbing is it? Am I gonna have to cover my eyes or leave for certain parts?

There are great classic western films out there like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Hang 'Em High, and A Fistful of Dollars. Who would’ve made the best Frollo in the upcoming live-action Hunchback movie, Jeremy Irons or Alan Rickman (RIP)?
While I believe Alan Rickman was an incredible actor and has perfected many roles, I think Jeremy Irons would be a perfect Frollo. Irons has a more upfront and evil edge to him when he’s playing a villain and could easily achieve that disgustful, lustful, passionate hatred engrained in Frollo’s character. Who do you guys think would be the best casting?

What movie was this scene from?
I know it’s been a while but I remember seeing a trailer for a movie, maybe a comedy or close to it but the scene was a high school kid who was reading an oral report for his class but was trying to pass off song lyrics as his report. I THINK it was a Queen song but not sure.
I’m sorry I can’t remember more. I think the kid was a guy with brown hair and a buzz cut. Again, details are fuzzy at best, but anyone have any idea?

What was Tom Rothman's worst offense?
Knowing what Tom Rothman has done over the years as being Hollywood's top idiot, I was shocked to hear him thanked at the Golden Globes for the instant classic "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse". What to you, hearing about all he's done, was the worst offense?
To me it was when he ruined X-Men 3 and hired Brett Ratner and blah blah blah to go up against Superman Returns at the box office, a slight against Bryan Singer 100% and a close second being that he stopped Ridley Scott and Jim Cameron's Alien project from happening (not totally but this is why it never happened) because he said "Why are you working on that? We have this script here, for, Alien vs. Predator".
What to you is his best of or best of list?

What are the most powerful movie scenes you have ever seen?
I was rewatching man of steel and there's just that scene of him standing underneath the terraforming machine completely alone, the air around him has waves in it and the camera is literally shaking from the amount of force pushing down on him, clouds of ash on every side, and he slowly looks up and sonic booms into the air. All the while epic music in the background. Just absolutely perfect moment.
What movie scenes are awe inspiring to you all?
Edit: I have a weird thing for seeing the "will" of someone. Like there is also this moment in Doctor Strange where the bald girl is fighting the dude who had mind sex with dormamu, and he hits the ground. A shock wave of earth comes out, and she rides over it and as it rolls over her she pushes it back. It's like a will versus will and she showed that hers was stronger by not only taking his attack but throwing it back even stronger(the same essence as the scene in man of steel)

The black people are supposed to be the villains in "Do The Right Thing" right?
So I watched the movie "Do The Right Thing" and my interpretation of it is that all of the black characters except "da mayor" were in the wrong and betrayed Sal.
This seems to be literally the only possible interpretation of the movie as it has the most hated black person in the town convince the clearly borderline mentally deficient town thug who is also hated by most people in the town to verbally assault Sal who smashes his boombox and then once the police kill the radio thug the black people get upset with Sal and destroy his pizza shop despite him not doing anything wrong and the main character even betrays Sal who has said that he sees him as family.
There isn't any other way to interpret this movie right? No one could think that all the black characters except "da mayor" are not horrible villains right?
BTW I'm not racist it just happens that this movie is about black people and I could have said "all the characters that betray Sal and his family", but it happens that this movie is about race relations or something.
I'm just wondering because I'm gonna be discussing it in film class and just want to make sure I'm right.

Movies Similar to The Breakfast Club and Almost Famous
I'm so used to doing a bunch of posts about thrillers that I forget my two favorite movies are "The Breakfast Club" and "Almost Famous". Part of it is because I can really identify with the teen with insecurities and part of it is because the movies just genuinely make me feel more hopeful and happy. I guess a kiddish way of saying it would be that these movies have "good vibes" or a better way to put it would be that these films remind me of being a kid and make me appreciate my childhood innocence, while embracing the darker, hornier side that most teenagers have. I know it sounds weird, but what are some films that have that youthful setting with relatable, good-natured characters and overall make you smile at the end. Other great examples would be Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Sixteen Candles.

What non-blockbuster movies will make a ton of money in 2019?
2019 is filled with exciting huge blockbusters like Captain Marvel, Shazam, Endgame, Aladdin, The Lion King, etc. They’re going to dominate the box office for sure. However, what are some of the non-blockbuster movies that will also do extremely well at the box office in your opinion? My guesses so far are Us and potentially Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Tbh, I just feel like we pay way too much attention to big movies this year, we kinda just put aside smaller movies a little bit.

More people should watch Can You Ever Forgive Me?
https://i.redd.it/l2cuh7hfg8j21.jpg
The foundation of their performances and the film itself is the amazingly strong and sharp script, written by Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty. There was no improvisation at all in the film, but it seems as though there was because the dialogue is so organic. Excellent direction by the refreshing Marielle Heller channels McCarthy and Grant’s talent into the cutting script. I think my favorite aspect of the script (and by extent the film) is the casualness with which it addresses the climate of New York City in the early 90s. Specifically, the precise but normalized way it incorporates the stories of LGBTQ people living in New York at the time. Lee and Jack are both gay, and Jack has AIDS (he eventually dies from it in 1994). They hang around a known gay bar and don’t conceal their habits. We see Lee interact with women she has engaged with in past relationships as well as women she hopes to engage in future relationships. We watch Jack flirt with other gay men and bring them back to Lee’s apartment. It is quite refreshing and nice to see LGBTQ characters portrayed so casually but with such care.
It is a drama and it can be dark at times, but you do not pity Lee for a second; rather you begin to understand that this is the life that she wants because it works for her. Even if her relationships are practically nonexistent, it is because she has made it so. Every moment, every action is intentional and in that the viewer learns to love Lee Israel, in all of her bitter glory. The most particularly salient scene is that in which Lee is given the opportunity to say a few words in front of the judge before she is sentenced. Instead of becoming typically remorseful or dreary, she firmly states that what she did was her best work and that she is still extremely proud of it—regardless of its legality. There is not an ounce of apology in her monologue and it is so very fitting.
Can You Ever Forgive Me? is a deeply intelligent and well-rounded film, reinforced by amazing performances from its lead actors and an impeccable script. It deliciously displays the full breadth of Melissa McCarthy’s talent and brings to our screen the story of a very morally questionable yet somehow exquisite woman. Most importantly, it is perfectly unforgiving.

I tried to create a top 10 list of movies I've seen. While I took into account how good the movies actually are, the final criteria was how much I would want them with me on a deserted island. The top 5 are secure in their placement; the bottom 5 could probably me moved around a bit with the right argument:
- It's A Wonderful Life
- The Lion King
- Forrest Gump
- Jurassic Park
- Fantastic Mr. Fox
- The Godfather
- Game Night
- Chinatown
- The Dark Knight
- The Other Guys
LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS THINK!

New trend of non-trailer, trailer for event films and/or series.
So I can’t help but notice the new trend of releasing non/trailers.
Avengers Endgame, a couple of spots. Shazam, a minute teaser a year ago. Game of Thrones, jack AND shit. Wonder Woman 84, zero. The new batch of X-men films, holy Christ they’ve pushed them back to the 31st century. Even Marty Scorsese’s The Irishman drooped a fake trailer for Netflix, fuck. The only thing that’s being released are those shitty Captain Marvel trailers. Now, I’m going to see the film, because, damn, I’m seeing the film, but those trailers are god awful, they look like a cartoon and it’s almost like they’re going OUT of their way to have Brie Larson come across with all of the personality of a graham cracker.
It’s like the studios are playing hardball.

What are some great sequels to terrible movies?
Are there any movies out there where the initial project was less than spectacular but a sequel somehow got greenlighted and was a hit?
This was inspired by a comment on the post regarding Will Smith dropping out of the sequel to Suicide Squad. The commenter notes that although the original more or less stunk, James Gunn is directing the sequel, giving fans hope that it will make up for the flop on the first go around.
There are obviously movies where the sequel surpasses the original-The Empire Strikes Back, The Dark Knight-but both of those movies and many other solid sequels build off of quality first movies. I’m curious as to if there are any movies where the sequel essentially saved the franchise and redeemed for a lackluster first movie.
Let me know if you guys know of any movies like this. Thought it might be a fun discussion.

Amazon Prime has lost a significant amount of its available titles.
I watch one movie every night. I used to look to Amazon Prime for just about any movie I felt like watching. I found that about 95% of the time, the movie I wanted was available for rent, purchase, or streaming.
In the last two weeks, nearly every movie I’ve searched has been met with “This title is currently unavailable”.
What happened?

Do you think that websites like Box Office Mojo should prioritise worldwide gross over domestic gross?
While I recognise that they are a US based site, they have an international audience and it can often be quite frustrating to see most of the data that is presented only covers earnings within the US and not worldwide.
You can find a breakdown of the foreign box office on a country by country basis and also it will be added to the domestic total in the summary (although only in a subsection) but you will not find the worldwide totals contributing to category charts or time period values.
I've also noticed that many other news and media outlets will also focus on domestic gross and almost belittle the importance of overseas business to the success of a film.
The US is obviously a huge market but with foreign markets such as China making up so much of the profits of a film, I feel that films, such as Alita, are being unfairly painted as failures without seeing the bigger picture of worldwide success.

So I know I'm really late to post about this but I need to let someone know what I think about the Jumanji Movie from 2018
So first of all, this is my first post on this subreddit so I'm not 100% sure what y'all will think of my "reaction".
So I will mainly be focusing on if the Jumanji game was a real video game.
So any gamer may have noticed this, but the game characters (like Bravestone and Roundhouse Ruby and not the people playing as them) that this would NOT be a very balanced game at all. I mean, I like the idea that each character has a different role in the game, but I hate how Bravestone is the fastest runner, the strongest fighter, etc. and being the only character in the game without any weaknesses, making him too OP.
The character Fridge plays as (I forgot his character's name) runs very slow compared to everyone else, he gives weapons to Bravestone (only once in the entire movie), he has the the most random strengths and weaknesses, like being a biologist was completely useless throughout the "game" until the very end where he rides the elephant so I think Fridge was only there for convenience of having 2 guys (not only having one dude with 2 girls) and character development throughout the movie and was completely useless if this was a real game.
Now onto Ruby Roundhouse's only weakness: Venom. I think this being her only weakness wasn't the best idea and I can't exactly tell what venom would do to the other characters if they ever get poisoned so I'm gonna have to do some guessing here. I think the only reason her only weakness is venom is because maybe venom does damage over time to the other characters and only kills Ruby with one hit.
That's all I got for now so after I watch it again and think about it some more I will edit this post with the new ideas I came up with or I will completely rewrite it on another post. Anyway, thanks for reading my post and comment if you have any ideas that maybe I should know about.

Need help finding a movie.
So I remember this movie from when I was younger. It was about this kid who had two super hero parents and he was suppose to inherit powers from one of them but they weren't coming in and his parents were getting worried. And before you all say "oh that's just sky high" it's not sky high because I remember the main character was black and was like 10 or 12 years old in the movie. Also the only scene I can remember from the movie is the parents are having a party because the kid lied about having his powers come in and when they ask them to show off his powers he has them gather in the back of the house by a pool and he throws a basketball over the house to trick them into thinking it was him flying over the house. I have no Idea which movie this is and it has been bothering me for years, I think it was one of those original disney channel movies but I'm not sure.

What good examples exist out there of any movie (or show) where they feature any OPENLY homosexual male character who's attractively feminine in how they look and dress (NOT a transgender woman)?
Preferrably want answers of something fitting all criterias. Not something that kinda fits with this or that, because I already know there are characters like those out there. I'm asking for all these things at once for a reason.
No, I am not saying this should be the norm or common or any such thing. I am simply just asking. If it bothers you, I'm not forcing you to read nor comment. Please only comment if you have any suggestions/recommendations for me. Thank you.

Need help finding movie suggestions for a super specific romance sub-genre centering around sex workers falling in love with their customers.
Is there a sub-genre of romantic movies where there's a prostitute and a customer who fall in love? Pretty Woman comes to mind, but I can't think of any others. Any thoughts?
I'm not even sure if this would be considered a sub-genre or possibly just a common theme? But anyway, today I got curious to see if there are very many movies out there where the actual plot of the movie revolves around a sex worker and her customer falling in love. I could come up with a ton of movies where a customer falls in love with a hooker. That's a common trope and it would be very easy to compile a list of films containing it. But films where the sex worker returns her client's affections seem much more rare. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Real hidden gems, #2: Targets (1968, Peter Bogdanovich)
Back with another installment in a series of films that aren't le underrated gems, but real underrated gems. This time around:
TARGETS
Tim O'Kelly plays a homicidal Vietnam veteran who has an unhealthy fascination with guns and death. Boris Karloff, in the last great role of his career, plays an aging horror film star who is no longer interested in making movies - he believes the horrors of the real world have far eclipsed anything on the screen. Over the course of a day, he'll be proven right, as O'Kelly's deranged vet finally snaps, sniping innocent bystanders all across Los Angeles.
Targets may be slightly dated by modern standards, but that's only because the senseless gun violence on display in the film has become so commonplace in the 50 years since the film's release. But in 1968, it was surely shocking, as was the violence of the day. A five-year span had seen the assassinations of John and Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, numerous civil rights activists, and the murderous rampage of Charles Whitman at the University of Texas. In its time, Targets was prescient and oh-so relevant.
The way this film came together is pretty fascinating. It only happened because Karloff still owed producer Roger Corman two days of work from a previous shoot. Bogdanovich was working for Corman at the time, and Corman gave Bogdanovich complete control, provided he used Karloff. The result was an incredibly assured debut feature. To pad the running time, Bogdanovich also used some footage from Corman's film The Terror which in addition to featuring Karloff, also starred a young Jack Nicholson. But the use of this footage is seamless, and works so well that you don't even notice that it's reused footage.
Bogdanovich would make his own le underrated gem not long after this film; The Last Picture Show brought the young director great acclaim and a few awards. It was (mostly) downhill from there. While Targets may not be his most acclaimed film, it is one of a kind within his filmography. It's brisk and mean, and he never made another movie like it.

The Plot of "The Man who killed Don Quixote" [!!Spoilers!!]
!!!The movie is not released in the US yet, where I live it's already out on Bluray so Hard Spoilers for those who wants to watch it and haven't seen it yet!!!
I watched the Man who killed Don Quixote for a second time and found out what was actually happening.
!!!Again, for those who haven't watched it you've been warned!!!
>! When you first watch the movie you might get confused of what is happening !<
>! The movie's has the real plot is hiding plainsight !>
>! The whole Movie is an elaborate Act, a Prank and revenge on Toby at least it's the explanation that makes the most sense to me, and it's starts from the Restaurant scene, (maybe before), when the boss gets him the Movie from the Gypsy that he made as a student, coincidentally makes an add with the Don Quixote character and to top that, the place he made the film is near the village, and from there the prank begins to unfold, he meets Javier and thinks he's Crazy. And suddenly a streak of craziness and coincidences occur. I noticed hint's. For example When he get's arrested the two cops are reading a journal about an terrorist execution and (notice that one of them stutters) and comments about it, later in the Movie he goes to a place where he thinks it's a Terrorist hide out and what is crazier in the next moment Spanish Medieval Soldiers raid the place, and the two in charge have the wanted poster of Toby and the Gypsy, when they leave notice one of them stuttering and later in the third act they pop up again in the castle. Back by the cops when they're driving they get hindered there is a holy week march you will notice the props they use for the march are the same in the third act. When they are building the pile in the castle. !<
>! The Gypsy pops out always, where Toby is, he finds Angelica after falling in a Cave with marks on it, he finds Jaqui and the Boss in sheer luck with them dressed in medieval clothes ready to go in the Castle after being with Don Quixote the whole journey!<
>!I'm not going through the whole plot you might got the idea by now!<
>!I think Angelica is the one who plotted the Prank in the when Toby knocks Don from the balcon while thinking it was someone else and kills him, it is revealed that he knew he was Javier the whole time and notice the others talking about taking things too far they are talking to Angelica!<
>!Why would they prank Toby? !<
>!1. He brought misfortune to the village where he filmed the short. This one is explained when when Don Quixote fights the knight when it's revealed that it's Raul along side the Priest and the woman that held him captive in the beginning. And Raul and others explains what he did to the Village.<!
>!2. It's clear from the beginning, that he is not a nice guy. He commits Adultery, lies to his boss and accuses the Gypsy, after he causes Chaos in the Village he accuses Rupert (the guy who gives him the messages), later it's revealed that he has prejudice against Muslims. He doesn't think too kindly of his friends and others, when he finds Gold later in the movie it is clear that he is greedy!<
>!3. The biggest reason is Angelica, he had messed up her life, and I think he had sex with her while she was still fifteen and leaving her and resulting her getting into escort jobs and why she has the scars in her back. !<

I feel like Bambi is becoming a forgotten classic.
It's not a movie that lends itself to the "Disneyland" experience. You don't see actors in Bambi costumes running around Disney's parks the way you do Cinderella or Cpt. Hook.
It's a short movie, barely over an hour, with almost no human presence and it's most memorable moment is famous for traumatizing reasons.
The fact that it's paced like a movie from the 40s and not with the zipper style of more modern movies doesn't help its cause. It also lacks the catchy hooks that Menken and others brought to Disney.
I adore the movie, by the way. The backgrounds are works of art and the characters are delightful. I just worry it's a film that we'll forget about in another decade or so while movies like Sleeping Beauty (a great one too) linger on.

Which Movie Most Closely Mirrors Your Real Life?
As a member of a Black College Marching Band I can relate to a lot of things that happen in the movie Drumline. Although the drumstick/sword-fighting scene was ridiculous and I'm a trombone player not a drummer many of the concepts and actions explored in the movie are relevant to my life. I felt like my own story could have been happening in the background of the movie.

Hereditary Review
My favorite movie of 2018
Hereditary is the most unpredictable horror movie made in the modern day In most horror movie these days you can predict everything that will happen but not in Hereditary, it takes a whole different route which is so original and terrifying The director did an amazing job with the cinematography every shot in the film is nearly perfect Every actor in the film is amazing especially Toni Collete I don't get why she didn't get an Oscar nomination Alex Wolff proves himself to be a really talented young actor in this Gabriel Byrns does a great job as the dad that's stuck in the middle of the problems that their family is having Milly Shapiro gives one of the most terrifying child performances in horror movies ever even though shes given limited dialogue
Now let's talk about the scares.... HOLY SHIT There's this one scene in the middle of the film where something happens and you know what happens but the director doesn't show you the actual thing he just shows you how the characters are reacting to it and when he does show you it, it sends a wave of fear in your body which I have never experienced before
You might not like this horror movie if... 1. You don't like unpredictable horror movies 2. You think that jumpscares are scary (dumbass) 3. If you're not into slow burn films (this movie takes it time to scare you but it pays off when it actually does)
But if I were to give this movie a grade I would give a 96 out of 100

I know for the Best Picture category the producers get the Oscar, but for the Best Foreign Language Film it is the director who gets the Oscar. In the case of Best Animated Feature does it go to the producers, director, or both? Now I’ve got to reach the character count so how is everyone’s day going?

ROMA review and a question about the Oscars (spoilers!)
This is a true return to form for Alfonso Cauron, who truly deserves the new gold statue for this film. An excellent comeback after the dreadful Gravity. This film is so real, there's a very nice quality to it, the performances all invite you to this place. It's wonderful! Got choked up when Cleo says she didn't want the baby. Poor Cleo. She deserved her Oscar nom, but I'm glad she didn't win honestly.
There are some moments here and there that could be a teeny bit better, the sequence where they went to that place and had a shindig wasn't very interesting and didn't add anything. The bit with the fire and the kids were dumping water on the fire and that guy stepped into frame and sang for a minute I did not like. Out of place, weird, and kind of cinematic which I hated.
So the family was named Sofi, and the daughter was also named Sofi? Sofi Sofi?
Glad the movie won Best Foreign Film. Alfonso deserved his awards, unless it's true there was another cinematographer and he took the credit was eh, maybe it isn't true who knows.
Why was it nominated for BFL and Best Picture? Isn't that the same award? Can someone explain that one to me?
I've seen Black Panther and BlackKklansman and those are the only other BP nominees. Considering everything I'm hearing about the other ones... This one should have won. None of them in my opinion are best picture worthy though (the ones I've seen anyway and considering all hearsay).
Top 8 Best Movies of 2018 (I need to complete my top ten list by seeing all the potentially great movies like Suspiria, Mandy, The Favourite, Ralph Wrecks the Internet etc)
Least to best: Black Panther, Roma, Sorry to Bother You, Halloween, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Creed II, Avengers: Infinity War, best: WIDOWS
Roma I gave a 9/10 on IMDb and for Letterboxd I gave it a 4.
Now can Inarritu redeem himself? Birdman I remember really liking a lot, Babel is a good movie, The Revenant I couldn't even fuckin watch.
Guillermo's golden though. (Pan's Labyrinth is a masterpiece, The Shape of Water was the second best of 2017, deserved his awards, the Hellboy movies are great, The Devil's Backbone from what I remember was interesting) Alejandro sucks but now we finally have a ripe two amigos lol. Fuck you, Gravity. I love you, Prisoner of Azkaban (one of my fave HP's).

Am I the only person who feels like Nolan kind of gave up on The Dark Knight Rises?
Rewatching it, the film is a mess.
Scenes are cut together awkwardly and his signature three storylines at once doesn't work at all in this one. It almost feels like he was doing it to just give the character a conclusion. This may be because of the death of Heath Ledger, it's not a secret that Nolan was deeply saddened by his passing, and possibly his death was one of the reasons that the film seems half assed. I don't want to say that Nolan didn't try, I think he has enough respect for himself and film to put his all into it. But I feel as though maybe his priorities weren't with this film. I don't know, I know his work, his quality of work, and his craftsmanship. There are so many plot holes, weirdly cut together sequences - maybe the film was rushed in the end? Just get it over with. Selena Kyle, Blake, Bane, Talia, all feel wedged in and none of them minus Bane and Blake were given any real arc or character. Catwoman is wedged in.
I loved this movie as a kid, I was a bit too young to see Batman Begins and The Dark Knight in theatres and I remember vividly seeing Rises and being super excited. It isn't bad, maybe that's nostalgia. But it's definitely not Nolan's best work or even close to his standard of work.

What's the appeal of Alita: Battle Angel
I watched it last night and I enjoyed it, but I don't really find the broadwide appeal that movie had on audiences and why people are going to a second screening.
I liked it, I enjoyed it and I found it interesting, but at the same time I found it generic and formulaic, with forced interactions that only serve as plot devices to further the story.
However I see is a smash hit with audiences and people who for seconds or thirds screenings and I just wonder why? What is so appealing? The eyes? The action? The story or the setting behind it?
All of those things we have seen it before.
If someone can clarify this, it will be welcomed because is driving me mad

A Myth That Needs To Die
So I saw some guy on DeviantArt today mention how he thought Disney was going to buy Sony Pictures next.
As for me? I think they're not going do that—at least not anytime soon. There are three big reasons for that.
The first reason is that they just bought 20th Century Fox for a massive $65 billion, making it their biggest purchase ever. Disney's previous major purchases—Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, were all spaced several years apart each. They had to be, because the company needed to fully absorb the cost of each one before moving onto the next one. All of those earlier purchases were about $4 billion each, which means Disney saw a return on them within a few years. But Fox is different. Disney probably won't break even on its acquisition of Fox for at least 5 years. And until then, it would be stupid to make ANOTHER huge purchase while they're still in the red from the last one.
The other reason is legal. With the addition of 20th Century Fox, Disney will control 40% of the American film market. Adding Sony to that would give them another 10%, pushing them over the 50% mark. In American anti-trust law, a company that controls at least 50% of the market for its product is considered a monopoly and can be forcibly broken up. Disney knows better than to do that.
The third reason is that there is no real reason for Disney to buy Sony Pictures. Everything Sony Pictures is doing, Disney already does too. The only possible reason I can think of for them to do this would be to regain the rights to Spider-Man. But even that isn't much of a reason. See, there’s a clause in a contract relating to the Spider-Man movies which says if Sony were to be sold, the rights would revert back to Marvel. So no matter who ends up buying Sony, Disney will still get Spider-Man regardless.
There are a lot of things Bob Iger theoretically COULD do, but he probably WON'T because they don't fit his strategy.
His strategy, ever since becoming CEO of Disney, has been to emphasize franchises rather than original works, and to buy up other companies in order to fill market niches Disney doesn't already cover. To wit:
Marvel-- Gave Disney a foothold in the superhero genre, which was becoming popular, and allowed the company to sell more products to boys (at the time Disney was associated mostly with girls)
Lucasfilm--Allowed Disney to make movies in the science-fiction genre, when its in-house movies in said genre underperformed. Also, like Marvel, increased the company's appeal to male audiences.
Fox-- Gave Disney a 66% stake in streaming platform Hulu, the rights to most other Marvel characters, National Geographic as a venue for documentaries, multiple franchises aimed at older audiences.
In late 2014 there was a persistent rumor that Disney was going to buy Time Warner. They easily could have, but they didn't. Why? Because there was nothing they had that Disney didn't already have. Time Warner has DC Comics, but Disney already has Marvel. They have an animation studio and a live-action movie studio, but Disney has those too.
It's the same way with Sony. There's nothing Sony has that Disney clearly doesn't already have.
"But wait!" I can already hear you saying. "Sony has the rights to Spider-Man! Of course Disney wants those!"
Not exactly. The nature of the film rights to Spider-Man is such that if Sony Pictures is ever bought by another company, the rights to Spider-Man will automatically revert to Marvel and therefore to Disney.
TL;DR-- Disney could buy Sony Pictures, but they probably won't because it doesn't make sense considering their past strategy.

A weird, subtle, favoritism-showing inconsistency in the Oscars
I know this is just a minor technicality, but I thought it was interesting. Also, I'm sure there are other examples, but these are the ones that jumped out at my memory.
-
2005's "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp" from Hustle & Flow officially went to "Jordan Houston, Cedric Coleman and Paul Beauregard" (not Juicy J, Frayser Boy, and DJ Paul)
-
2015's "Earned It" from Fifty Shades of Grey cited Abel Tesfaye (not The Weeknd)
-
2018's nomination for "All the Stars" from Black Panther mentions "Solána Rowe" (not SZA)
-
...but 2018's winner "Shallow" from A Star Is Born says it went to Lady Gaga (not Stefani Germanotta)
I just thought it was weird (albeit not shocking) that the Academy seems to insist on using real names when it comes to rappers but doesn't care otherwise.

What's with turning lots of "originally" white characters into black lately?
I don't understand ,I don't really care about the color of characters in shows i just care about their performance , but why would they change white characters to black ? why not just create black characters ?
Will it be the same if a black character was changed to white ?
It just doesn't feel right .
Edit: it feels as if the only purpose is to show how "anti racist" they are by adding diversity to their show regardless if that will add quality to it or not.

Movies that take viewers on an unexpected trip (i.e. movies to watch while high)
One of my favorite things to do is watch movies at a solid [7-9] that will take me down a thematic rabbit hole and spit me out somewhere completely unexpected based on its early narrative. Movies with at least one major plot pivot point are, to me, the best kind to watch high. But lists of films that fit this description are hard to come by and are dominated by "twist endings", like Oldboy, Usual Suspects, or The Sixth Sense. I'm looking more for movies that have full exposition of a new theme, rather than just 3 minutes crammed in at the end explaining how the audience was tricked. Here are a few films that I consider decent examples of what I'm after, and I'm wondering if there are more out there:
- The Prestige
- Gone Girl
- From Dusk Till Dawn
- Cabin in the Woods
- The World's End
- Black Swan
- Overlord
- Sorry To Bother You
- 10 Cloverfield Lane
- Terumae Romae

How did the racism depicted in BlacKkKlansman affect you?
First off: my goal here is to see how different people with different background and experiences focus on different things in a movie
Amidst the whole Green Book winning BP-drama, one point that was discussed was Spike Lee and his apparently emotional reaction to Green Book winning. And ofc how there is a parallel to "Driving Miss Daisy" winning the Oscar in 1990 when Lee had "Do the Right Thing" in the running (which wasn't even nominated). BlacKkKlansman was said to have tackled the topic of racism in a better and more nuanced way. Ok, this is just to explain why I am going to ask what I'm gonig to ask about BlacKkKlansman. I do not want to talk about Green Book or the Academy Awards (and I kinda question if I should've mentioned it at all)
So, my question is:
What was your reaction to racism as shown in BlacKkKlansman? Did it resonate with you? Did it teach you something? Did it maybe change your perception of or opinion on something? What did you take away from this?
I'm asking this because I - a white guy, not American - and also my friends didn't have much of a reaction to it. Ofc the film dealt with racism, but there was no lasting effect on us. Stuff like police harassing black people and all the other shit that is happening made us sympathize with and root for whoever was exposed to this. It didn't make me think about it after the film ended. And I believe the reason is that as a whole, it was a fun film. I was entertained. And it was funny in plenty of scenes, including dumb or goofy moments by the racists. This made sure I saw it as entertainment and nothing more. The only thing that did evoke a real reaction from and stuck with me wasn't part of the actual movie - it was the footage from Charlottesville.
I can definitely see how you would pick up or focus on different things if you have experienced racism, have friends who have or you are simply more interested in it for whatever reason. So that's what I want to know, how did you experience it?
To be clear, this is much more about how we as an audience perceive the film and what we take away from it and not as much about the film's objective quality.

I wonder why another reason why Disney is buying Fox is because the Touchstone library isn't that profitable anymore.
Like does Disney get some money from those off of cable movie reruns, DVD sales, or streaming.
Also it might be a guess but aside from movies like Splash or Who Framed Roger Rabbit (which was going to be released under Disney but Eisner thought it was too adult for a disney film.) Do people remember movies from Touchstone let alone still talk about.
I don't think a lot people still remember movies like Turner and Hooch, Dead Poets Society, The Jerry Bruckheimer movies like Con Air and Armageddon, Bringing Down the House, etc the stuff i can think in the top of my head.
But with Fox they have a more bigger and historic movie library with stuff like the Shirley Temple movies, The Fly, The Sound of Music, Planet of the Apes, the first Star Wars movie, Alien, Big, Die Hard, Avatar, and the Fox Searchlight movies. So maybe that's why Disney wants Fox because of its iconic film library

100-year Best Picture box set
What kind of demand do you think there would be for a 100-film Best Picture box set after the 100th Academy Awards? I know the logistics for putting it together would be an absolute nightmare (hence why a similar set has never existed, outside of a couple studios' 10-film "best of" efforts), but what kind of demand (and pricing) do you think would have to arise beforehand in order for one to exist? Personally, I would be willing to pay a fairly high price, assuming the extras were worth it, e.g. at least something for the very earliest films and at least the original DVD extras + something Oscar-related for the latest films.
Note: I originally posted this in r/oscars, but all I got were sarcastic jokes in the vein of, "I'D PAY $0 BECAUSE [movie that I didn't like] WOULD BE IN IT." This joke was funny a grand total of zero times, so please refrain from that kind of comment, if you would.

Did Pharrell meant to say a different quote at the Oscars?
When Pharrel was leading the Best Animated Picture category, he opened with a quote from Corinthians
When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, >I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
However, there's a quote by CS Lewis that spins that aforementioned quote.
“When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

When Disney begins their streaming service will content bought from other streaming services such as iTunes or Amazon be deleted from our libraries?
I read about a guy who had films disappear from his library and, when questioned, Apple said that even though he purchased these films they weren’t under his ownership and that it’s in their TOS.
Could this really be the case? Could purchased films be taken away as they’re the “property” of Disney?
If even part of this is true it’s troubling considering another report that Samsung may be poised to kill their Blu-ray division.
Edit: The content being removed would be under Disney’s ownership not Apple or Amazon. MCU, for example, purchased from iTunes would be removed and there’s nothing you can do about it.

Little detail, that if intentional, might be my favorite joke in the LEGO Movie 2:
Throughout the movie it is clearly hinted at that Rex and Emmet have some sort of connection, but what I specifically noticed is that Rex on a few occasions called Emmet his “brother” or a variation of it. I hope this was intentional, as it would make the twist in the end that (spoilers):
Rex was secretly Emmet from the future a huge middle finger to those who try and guess the twist in the movie using small details in dialogue as clues.
Just another way the movie deviates from usual formulas, something these movies are known to do.

ALL but 3 of the movies that won Oscars were biographies/documentaries. Black Panther, Spider-Verse and Bao are the only 3 exceptions. Discussion
Additionally, Bao and Spider-Verse were not against any biographies/documentaries. So there was always going to be a minimum of 2 winners that weren't biographies/documentaries either way.
Black Panther is the ONLY movie to beat a biography/documentary in the 2019 Oscars. There were 24 awards in total.
I feel like there needs to be a discussion about the very obvious bias sorrounding the Academy Awards and their tendency to pick biographies/documentaries over any other genre/type of movies/films. This is reflected not only in the over-whelming majority of winners but also the nominees selected being also mostly biographies/documentaries.

The Postman - one of the best or worst sci-fi of all time?
I was surprised to see one of my favorite movies online rated at 8% on rotten tomatoes.
I believe this movie was completely misunderstood. As is often with Sci-fi.
This epic sci-fi starring Kevin Costner has breathtaking cinematography, shot on site in Colorado etc. More importantly, has one of the deepest subjects ive ever seen in a movie. The power of ideas, beliefs and hope but also how they are shared. This microcosm of the birth of the USA is haunting but incredibly rewarding.
You will never look at a Postman the same way again.
Synopsis:
The whole movie is a western style dystopia that is eerily possible and realistic. Dominated by a post apocalyptic despotic ruler that uses Feudal control and protection racketeering to extert dominion.
With the emergence of this Feudal leader the idea of America dies buried in the memories of the apocalypse survivors that although scarred hold dear their old country.
In this chaos, a drifter, an opportunistic entertainer who basically sells his acting for room and board travelling town to town finds a derelict mail truck. He wears the uniform and carries the nail to its next route "acting" as a restored USA postal worker.
He holds his lie at gunpoint, finally winning over the towns. The towns people bleed hope for this seemingly low level federal employee. Anything for news outside, to mail a letter or to recieve one.
After working the route for food and board, people realized there lost friends and relatives were still alive. Connecting these people with a renewed restoration of the USA proves deadly for the ruling Feudal leader eager to supress their hope and with it his monopoly on their disunity.
The themes in this movie are truly powerful.
The power of a letter The power of institutions like the Post The power of Hope The Idea of the United States ( fragile, uniting but easily lost) The barbarian and despotic nature of man That people will die for hope and an idea
Also, much deeper themes:
Like what is society, why are uniforms worn, how do people assume there roles and occupations etc.
Its ironic that both the Postman and the General are both impostors. Both illegitimate leaders that fell there by chance.
Yes, there are some ego parts with Kevin but people were punitive. This is a great film and cult classic totally Misunderstood.

Where to get movie posters online (preferrably from EU site)?
I want to order and frame into my room some movies. I think I'd definitely buy one Le Samourai poster if it's cool enough looking and frame it, but can't really find the place from where to order it from. I found some sites that sell posters like that in my country but can't really find Le Samourai ones.

What’s the best Best Picture winner?
Seeing as though Green Book seems to be a rather unpopular pick for best picture (at least here on Reddit), let’s make things more positive and talk about the best Best Picture winners. Personally I’d have to go with Annie Hall. It’s hilarious, did something new with the romantic comedy genre, and still holds up today. What do you think?

In the same year (1996) Mars Attacks made 101 million worldwide, while Independence Day made 800+ million worldwide. Why?
I get that one film is much more of a blockbuster released on July 4th week in the summer, but if Mars Attacks had help of being released before Christmas break which usually helps legs of films. I mean it makes sense Independence Day would make more but EIGHT TIMES MORE (both domestic and worldwide) is a big difference.

I've never been more excited and in anticipation for so many new movies like I have been for 2019
admittedely some look terrible (like the new Aladdin, Pokemon detective, MIB), but seriously, there are so many good movies coming out this year:
Avengers 4
Godzilla KoM
Us
Dumbo
John Wick 3
Toy Story 4
Spider man 2
The Irishman
Dumbo
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
IT 2
Zombieland 2
and etc.
I've never really wanted to go out to the theatres again especially in the past decade thanks to the comfort of watching stuff at home on streaming services but man the movie industry is really stepping it up lately and i can't wait to go out and watch some of these films
some really good directors, writers, and film makers in general are putting up their best work all in the same year and the oscars will be one of the most tightly contested ever in every category.
(i know the Irishmen will be on Netflix but still having a legendary director in Scorcese with an assemble cast is going to be epic and i had to include it)

Skin, Green Book, and the Academy’s Faux-Progressiveness
Director Peter Farrelly accepting an Oscar for producing ‘Green Book’
Sunday night’s Oscars ceremony represented a show of conflicting ideas – at moments the increasingly diverse voting Academy seemed to actually be making a change, from Black Panther’s Afrofuturism costume and production design snatching victory from the more typically Oscar-friendly period stylings of The Favourite to the legendary Spike Lee finally receiving his long-overdue recognition. But other decisions were disappointingly retrograde, such as the choice to give the most awards of the evening to the astonishingly generic Bohemian Rhapsody, which took home four trophies including a particularly bewildering editing win as well as best actor for Rami Malek’s flaccid central impersonation. The final honor of the night, best picture, would thankfully bypass Rhapsody but only to go to the similarly ire-attracting Green Book; a tepid, reductive tale of how friendship can solve racism.
But while these two films have rightfully been the subject of much online despair in the hours following the ceremony, there’s one winner that seems to have escaped relatively unscathed: the live-action short winner, Skin. Directed by Iranian filmmaker Guy Nattiv, who’s following up Skin with a feature of the same name to be released by A24 later this year, the twenty-one-minute short follows the family of a white supremacist who brutally beats a black man for smiling at his son in a supermarket. What follows is some of the most misguided, inane storytelling I’ve maybe ever seen.

Shoplifters: can someone explain Yuri's ending?
Can someone explain the meaning to the ending of Yuri's story? I feel like there was more left to interpretation, than there should have been. I get the sense that her story was supposed to end on a hopeful note but I didn't really get that feeling of hopefulness from it. I feel like either I missed something or the story didn't give her very good closure. I know that not every movie needs to have a happy ending, but I think a main character like Yuri needs decent closure at least. I love everything else about this movie so much, and that's why I need to understand this.

Road to Perdition (2002). Very good movie, and I highly recommend it as it deserves to have a bigger audience.
All around, a very solid gangster flick that combines elements of noir and art-house. Exceptionally well directed, one might even argue a bit on the nose. But I like movies in that style. The cinematography, the period detail of Great Depression Illinois, the costumes all spot on. Thomas Newman's soundtrack I actually listened to a lot when I was a kid, stopped for a while, and watching the movie I again I realize how beautiful it is and it may now be among my favorite scores.
The performances, it goes without saying, is where the movie really shines. The story might be a revenge tale and another mob movie about family, but the actors really elevate it to a new level. Tom Hanks and Paul Newman have so many scenes where all they have to do is simply look into the camera, and yet their expressions give the viewer all they need to know about their characters. My favorite would probably be Tom Hanks in the Church, so not to spoil too much. The kid does an excellent job as well, and one props I got to give to the writers is that he actually sounds like somebody of his age rather than a 22 year old in a 12 year old's body as most writers tend to do.
The pacing is all excellent and all the relationships are fleshed out into the film's poignant crescendo. This is one movie, along with Zodiac and Kingdom of Heaven: DC, that I think deserves more attention and implore you to check out.

Why is Spike Lee getting praised for his reaction to the Green Book win?
Regardless of how deserving Green Book was of the win, Spike came across as massively petulant, storming out of the building and then taking heaps of swings at the movie in press. It just seems strange because his movie was hardly the 'Saving Private Ryan' or 'Goodfellas' absolutely robbed movie, just about everyone had it below at least Roma, The Favourite and A Star is Born. Yet he's openly acting indignant of the win. I am Australian so am not sure of the reverence people have for Spike but he came across really childish to me, would like to hear some opinions.

PULP FICTION IS NOT A CULT CLASSIC. Change my mind (rant ahead)
Is Pulp Fiction a cult classic?
Absolutely F***ing not!
Forgive my profanity, but please. My Uncultured (possibly inbred) roommate says yes it is. Someone has to put their foot down on this issue though. Pulp Fiction is undoubtedly a monumental film, but not a cult classic. That would require it to underperform at the box office, but it made more than its budget back in the first weekend alone. Does it really have a distinct niche following when every other college student has a poster of it on their damn wall? By Lance Armstrong’s single testicle NO. And while most (but not all) cult movies are unpopular upon release Pulp Fiction was instantly renowned. That’s like calling Mad Max: Fury Road a cult film, It’s great, but not cult, and at least not yet classic.
Look at other cult films: Blade Runner, excellent, artsy and inventive, but without mainstream appeal. The Room, a vile movie that bombed at the box office, but became ironically popular. The Rocky Horror Picture Show, arguably a mainstream cult classic that is well known and well referenced piece of cinema, yet still weird and with enough of a B movie feel to qualify it (in my mind). All these movies have become more famous with age and while Pulp Fiction has done this, it was never dismissed or seen as a niche cultural phenomenon, everyone knew how great it was.
No sane cinephile gives Star Wars cult status. When it came out it may have been cult and not classic, but since has become classic and not cult. Jurassic Park, Jaws, Terminator, Titanic, Die Hard, The Breakfast Club, The Wizard of Oz, Forrest Gump, etcetera, etcetera. None of these films are cult classics. All are mainstream, and there’s nothing wrong with that, but it’s not hip and different to like them, EVERYBODY LIKES THEM. Movies that do well and become a part of the mainstream, regardless of following can’t be considered cult. That’s like calling all major religions cults, when what makes these movies (and religious groups) unique is their fringe place in cinema. In the case of Pulp Fiction the people calling it a cult film are the pseudo-intellectuals of the movie world. You can’t just see a great movie that everyone knows and say you like “cult films.” Christ sake that’s not even a genre! I don’t make any claim to being one of the pompous snobs of the film world, but these stupid schmucks calling Pulp Fiction a cult classic!? Someone call a 1950’s psychotherapist to prescribe them a lobotomy.
Normally I would say it’s subjective as to what movies you like and what constitutes a cult classic, but a line needs to be drawn, and I’m drawing it here God damnit. Pulp Fiction is not a cult classic.
This is how my argument with my roommate went: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uznUlgpKBzE
